Our original song, Rain, started with Zack while he was watching an episode of House. There was a beautiful chord progression at the end of the episode that inspired him to create the beginning cello hook that starts Rain. From there, we wrote the melodies that bring the song to life. The chorus melody was actually written a while before Zack wrote the hook for Rain, but we felt that it fit the song perfectly once we began writing it. We named it Rain because the beginning cello hook that Zack plays reminded us of rain drops. Since we're from Arizona, rain has a special place in our hearts because it doesn’t rain a lot here.

This song has quickly become one of our most popular songs; it is now our third most viewed video in less than a year! Thank you for listening, everybody!

How To Play What You Give By Tesla - Guitar Lesson

In this video I demonstrate how to play the song What You Give by the band Tesla. This is a great song from their album Psychotic Supper that was released in 1991. What You Give features a lot of tasty guitars parts and tones as does the entire album. Frank Hannon really took a lot of time fleshing these parts out in the studio with the right guitars, amps and effects to make a beatiful pallette of sound that is so pleasing to the ears. I feel that Tesla (although very successful) never fully got the amount of respect they deserved. I recommend all guitarists that like 80's rock, blues and metal to go back and revisit the first 3-4 Tesla albums just to really experience what they have to offer, both sonically and from a songwriting perspective. SONG/VIDEO NOTES
This extended mix features keyboard whiz Rod Temperton on an expanded instrumental section. Harmoniously, you can hear Eric John's beautiful rhythm guitar chords in this section. Music to the ears.

Technically, “The Groove Line” is classified as a disco song. However, its sophisticated R&B funk sound sets it apart from most of the ubiquitous, redundant disco music of the late 70s. Instead of a dreamy jazzy intro like "Boogie Nights", Rod Temperton's genius chord progression is utterly apparent as the song begins with a synth intro that pulsates on the eighths, like a freight train in motion chugging along. I love the intro - so much so that I extended that pulsating synth then added four crash cymbal rolls before moving to the sizzling hi-hats. I also added an 808 sine wave roll-off on the first 3 kick drum hits that sounds great with subwoofers. Turn it up and wake the neighbors!

At the time, synthesizers were new and really evolving - being integrated more and more into popular music with complex arrangements using multiple keyboards. The beauty of Rod’s synth melodies and the spirited complementary vocal harmonies of the Wilder brothers was unmatched. Keith sang with an aggressively masculine edge, while Johnnie had a feather-light smooth touch. He just looks so happy when he sings! Johnnie's falsetto reigns throughout the song, handling tricky chord changes during the chorus with ease.

The drummer, Ernest "Bilbo" Berger, an underrated Jazz/Blues drummer from Czechoslovakia, is one that I list as one of my most influential funk drummers of the 70s. Here he executes a sixteenth note/semi-quaver pattern on the hi-hat that keeps the song grooving. On the chorus he switches to a swing-ish 'double-tap' quarter note close/open hi-hat pattern, that I play with my left hand (open, not crossed). His 1977 Ludwig Vistalite concert toms, perfectly tuned to the notes of the song, were bright and punchy. Barry Blue did a superb job of recording the drum track and mixing them prominently up front in the mix. I tried my best to do justice and match that tom and overall sound in this video.

What if funk/fusion drummer Dennis Chambers was the drummer for Tool?

(Don’t tell Danny Carey.)

Dennis is known for his legendary backbeat and funky style. So of course we felt mischievous and we dared him to try playing “Schism”, one of Tool’s biggest songs. It’s full of odd time signatures, quick, complex changes and unexpected accents, and Dennis had never heard it before.

But we didn’t ask him to learn the real drum parts: we wanted to see what he’d come up with on his own after hearing the song once. While you’ll hear the song with drums in this video, Dennis was actually listening to a drumless track.

“This is not me,” he warned us as he listened through the track, but “in my younger days, this would’ve been up my alley!”

How will Dennis Chambers not only learn a song he’s never heard before, but in a style he’s unfamiliar with – and in odd time, at that?

Since the song doesn’t have a drum track, he listens for two things: the style and the time signature. Watch Dennis’ playthrough where he gives it his own spin. It’s solid, it’s groovy, and there’s some unexpected footwork later on. It’s amazing how much a song can change with a different approach on the drums.
