A decade later, Quavo is on his third album, QRÖMELIFE, and taking stock of just how far he's come. Alex Ferreira's lyrics are a tide swishing with his own musical moon. Lapping and twisting and flowing in tandem with a steady guitar and tropical-leaning percussion, there's an alignment with the natural world of his island origins.

A poet in his own right, the Dominican singer has spent years quietly establishing himself as a true master of the songwriting craft. At the Tiny Desk, his mastery is on candid display. Some artists shrink under tungsten office lights, unable to hold up to the rawness of a stripped down set. Ferreira's brilliance shines in the simple — guitar, bass, drums, and piano — just enough sound to illuminate an unbreakable melody.

He sings of love mostly, heartbreak sometimes, but the day to day-ness of the comings and goings of life is always present. He raises the everyday to a level of artistic beauty, yet manages to make life feel breathable. What tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba offer at El Tiny is the soul of the Latin American song book. Most of these compositions come from Filin, their collaborative album of Cuban ballads from the 1940s to the '60s — songs that were originally popular for their lyrics, interpreted here with nuanced, instrumental performances.

Aldana grew up listening to jazz in her native Chile. Both her dad and her grandfather were jazz musicians. On tenor sax, Aldana takes a very dramatic lead with both her lyricism as well as her deeply resonant tone. From Havana, Rubalcaba is a master of space and time, having played the most well known names in both Cuba and the U.S. His presence adds a layer of musical and emotional heft, as well as a delicate authority that comes from a lifetime in jazz. Together they embody the deeply felt passions that fuel so much of the music from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Jazze Pha traces his musical roots back to his father, Bar-Kays founding member James Alexander, and shares how growing up around Stax Records helped shape the producer he would become. He also reveals the inspiration behind his iconic “Ladies and gentlemen” producer tag and reflects on the Atlanta studio culture that helped launch a generation of hitmakers.

The two revisit Jazze Pha’s work with Ciara and Missy Elliott on “1, 2 Step,” including the story of how T.I. originally recorded a verse for “Goodies” before Petey Pablo appeared on the final version. Jazze also opens up about signing Jeezy, creating more than 50 records during Cash Money’s legendary run and working alongside Lil Wayne, Birdman and Mannie Fresh.

From Noontime and Patchwerk Studios to Pimp C, E-40 and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, this is a conversation about relationships, missed opportunities and the people who built the sound of the South.
