Should've Been The G.O.A.T Female Rapper! What Stunted FOXY BROWN'S Growth?
The mid 90s. One of the golden eras of hip hop music, and let the right person tell it, it was THE brightest age of the genre. It was also heavily dominated by men, who claimed at least 15 of the top 20 spots. The other 5 ladies that donned most list were the cream of the crop, and you could imagine the type of work it took to get there. Usually missing from a lot of list is Foxy Brown, and it’s a travesty this is so. Personally Foxy Brown is my all time favorite female rapper with her work on the Firm alone solidifies that for me. Her voice always stood out and ranged from the gangsterest tone on record or freestyle to the sweetest most humble personality. One of only 3 females that could rhyme in a room full of men and shut down the show. Let’s not talk about affirmative action. Her debut album, dropped 7 days after lil Kim, who had the highest charting album for a female not named Lauryn Hill for a week. The debut went platinum, along with her second studio project that debuted #1 on billboard and also eventually went platinum. 2 platinum albums in and just 22 years old she was poised to possibly be one of the best rappers of her generation. Today she should be heralded as at least top 2, but like hinted at earlier, she seems to have been forgotten by her standards and here are 3 reasons why that is.
