Coolio discovered hip hop and started rapping after meeting some neighbors from New York who introduced him to the genre. These neighbors often brought hip hop music tapes and albums, and they would throw parties where Coolio got his first taste of rapping. His first rap name was Boo Daddy, a nickname given to him by his family, who called him Boo. But one day, while he was playing the guitar, his friends jokingly called him Julio Iglesias after the famous Spanish singer. The name stuck, and he eventually shortened it to Coolio.
