David Marvin Blake, better known as DJ Quik, was born on January 18, 1970, in Compton, California. Growing up on the west side of Compton at 436 West Spruce Street, Quik was surrounded by the tough realities of gang life that shaped much of the city. Compton, being a hotbed for gang activity, inevitably pulled him into that lifestyle.
