Ella Fitzgerald (1917 – 1996) is probably one of the best scat singers in its history. She had a long-lasting and successful career of nearly 60 years, with her last performance being in 1993. She was a jazz fan from a young age. She had this magical voice which she could transform any sad lyrics into a happy melody. Even though she didn’t had too many reasons to be happy. During her childhood she had to deal with a very aggressive stepfather and her mother killed in 1932, she ran away to Harlem to live with her aunt. According to the New York Times, she also dabbled in criminal activities, which eventually put her in an orphanage. Luckily her career went less tough on her. She won 14 Grammy Awards and a Presidential Medal of Freedom during this period. “April in Paris” was composed in 1931 on a baby grand piano located in Boccino's 54th Street rehearsal hall. This baby grand piano is now owned by Michael Adams and many pianists have recently played “April in Paris” on the same piano which it was composed on.
