"It Was Written" is the second album by American rapper Nas, out on July 2, 1996, by Columbia Records. After his first album "Illmatic" (1994) did okay, Nas aimed for a more polished, mainstream sound with this one. Mostly made by Trackmasters, it moved away from his debut's raw, underground style and focused more on mafioso and gangsta themes. Plus, it introduced Nas's short-lived supergroup The Firm, with rappers Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega.

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, born on September 14, 1973, but better known as Nas, is an American rapper. He's known for his East Coast style of hip hop and is considered one of the best rappers ever. Nas, whose father is a jazz musician named Olu Dara, started making music in 1989 using the name "Nasty Nas." He recorded demos with the help of another East Coast rapper, Large Professor. Nas made his first guest appearance on the song "Live at the Barbeque" by his group, Main Source, in 1991.
