Doris Payne was born and raised in the Bronx, the daughter of a Pentacostal minister, who dissapproved of secular music. Payne was working as an usherette at the Apollo Theater, when she was discovered by James Brown. Taking the stage name Troy, Doris Troy sang backup for numerous Atlantic Records recording stars as well as being a member of the original lineup of the Sweet Inspirations with Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick. She co-wrote her first hit song as Doris Payne, Just One Look, which peaked at #3 on the Cash Box chart, week ending 8/3/63. After several more singles on Atlantic, Troy returned to backup singing, both in the US and the UK, primarily working with rock and roll acts at home and abroad.
