Best known for the late 90’s worldwide hit ‘Save Tonight’ Eagle Eye Cherry, yes that’s his real name would come from a pretty musically accomplished family. So itwas no surprised he went on to have some success of his own. In today’s video let’s talk about the story of the song Save Tonight.

Let’s get the obvious question out of the way. Why is he called Eagle Eye cherry. Well his father was avante garde trumpet player DOn Cherry, who bestowed upon his son the name Eagle Eye several days after his son was born because of piercing nature of his eyes.. His father was also part Aboriginal - with their roots coming from Oklahoma. .His father Don would play with the likes of Lou Reed, and John Coltrane. Eagle Eye would spend his youth on the road with his father who played gigs around Europe. He would initially grow up in rural Sweden before moving to stockholm. It was normal for their family to get into a camper van and drive across europe going to their father’s gigs.

Eagle Eye’s first instrument would be the drums. At age 14 his family moved to new york attending the new york high school of performing arts. His classmates would include Jennifer anniston and neighbours would include members of the talking heads.

But early in his life it seemed like Eagle Eye was headed towards a career in modeling and acting., Following high school. he did a few modeling gigs and wans’t really a fan of it. It was by the time he was in his early 20’s he had already landed roles in both on the fourth of july, The Doors and Arthur 2: on the rocks. And also appeared on the cosby show. He’d go on to land a few roles on a few pilots that never saw the light of day. He was also busy landing commercials and doing off-broadway plays. He even got offered a chance ot be an mtv vj but turned down the job offer since the money was too low.

Despite having some early success in acting and being able to pay the bills,, he soon realized that he pursue a career in music. Eagle Eye wanted to make an impact on people and realized being an actor, he wouldn’t be able to do that.

He soon left new york after, quit acting and headed back to stockhol after meting a swedish women. He soon began tinkering away on the songs that would make up his debut album desireless. He had rented a place in stockholm that had an acoustic guitar left by one of it’s previous inhabitants. Never having played guitar, he learned the instrument.
Eagle Eye Cherry would have a melting pot of influences citing Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Soundgarden, Sheryl Crow, Smashing pumpkins and Radiohead.

For his first album, Cherry would end up wanting to take an under the radar approach with his musical career - signing with a small label in Sweden - having recalled seeing his own family dealing with major labels. I should also mention that his olde rhalf-sister was innovative funk dance artist Neneh Cherryy

As Eye Eye toyed away on his debut record in 1995 - his father would pass away in his late 50’s due to liver cancer. . He’d remark in numerous interviews that keeping the music simple was one of the best lessons he learned from his father. Despite wanting to take al low-key approach with his first album,. life had other plans. The song Save Tonight, which was one of the last songs written for the album and an anomaly on the record would become a worldwide hit.

Eagle Eye would admit he wrote the song on a warm saturday. He was supposed to play soccer that day, but opted to stay home and wrote the song instead. He wanted to write something upbeat and uptempo for a his mostly mellow debut record. He would tell an interviewer he knew it was a special track recalling

I could feel that it was a catchy song. The reason it only has four cords is because I didn’t know what I was doing. I was like, I didn’t even think like you could put in a bridge or something! I’d just started really figuring the ac
