I pick apart the amazing key changes, chords progressions, line clichés, chromaticism and more that make Queen's magnificent Bohemian Rhapsody.

A key ingredient of Muse's signature brand of prog rock is classical music. Pretty much all Muse songs owe part of their sound to classical music, but sometimes Muse will borrow entire passages from their favourite composers, to the point that they have basically just recorded a rock cover of a classical masterpiece.

For the first half of the 20th century, jazz was the king of music! But even if jazz has since been dethroned by modern styles of music like rock, pop and hip hop, jazz still serves as a vast source of inspiration for contemporary artists.

Either for expressive reasons or legal reasons, artists will sometimes re-record their own tracks. Whether it's John Lennon's uncompromising perfectionism or Taylor Swift's bitter battle with her ex-record label, the reasons behind re-records can vary, but they always offer us an interesting insight into previously unexplored sides of classic songs.

Strawberry Fields Forever is not only one of The Beatles greatest and most ambitious accomplishments, but it is one of the most distinctive and creative songs ever recorded. Opinions on The Beatles self-titled double album (widely known as "The White Album") have been split even before the album got released. Personally I've always felt the stone cold classics on this album are diluted by the sillier, forgettable tracks. So today I'd like to walk you through which tracks would make my cut for a single White Album.

For many western listeners, the first time they heard Indian classical music, or at least something resembling it, was on a Beatles record. One of the many flavours that makes up the sound of The Beatles is there free and open use of Indian instrumentation, practices and techniques. Ranging from small seasonings, like Lucy In The Sky, to full on tributes, like Within You Without You, The Beatles discography features various excursions to the subcontinent.

Upper chord extensions are notes we add to a chord which stretch beyond the octave, so for example, 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. Chords like these can often seem somewhat intimidating if you've not been introduced to them as they come with a whole range of "rules" and conventions on how to play them. So hopefully today I can break down some of the mystery surrounding these lush, beautiful chords!

The "royal road" progression (王道進行, Ōdō shinkō) is to Japan what "the axis progression" is to the Western world. This chord progression comes up time and time again across Japanese music, to the point that to many listeners, the progression has a "Japanese" sound to it.

Band On The Run, the track and album, are widely considered to be a highlight of Paul McCartney's solo career. With Band On The Run, Paul once again reached the heights of songwriting and creativity that he had been working at during The Beatles finest years. In this video I'm taking a closer look at how this masterpiece of a song has been put together.

Junichi Masuda's soundtrack for the original Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow games is iconic. Despite the limited hardware offered by the Gameboy, Masuda managed to create some highly effective music, and he did so with a little inspiration from his favourite classical composers.

Sampling might seem almost like cheating... taking an extract from somebody else's song and using it in your own work. However, as long as everyone involved has been credited and reimbursed, sampling can be a really creative and clever way to make new music.
