July 30, 1963:  Videotaping of "Episode Five" of "The Judy Garland Show" at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood.

Judy's guests for this episode were Tony Bennett and Dick Shawn.

Judy's songs: "If Love Were All" (cut before the broadcast but the footage still exists); "Yes, Indeed" (with Bennett and Shawn); "Garland-Bennett Medley" (including a duet on "I Left My Heart In San Francisco"); "My Buddy" (with Shawn); and in the "Born In A Trunk" segment: "Stormy Weather" preceded by her story about a moth flying into her mouth while on stage at the Greek Theater; and "I Will Come Back."

Judy also taped a chat with series regular Jerry Van Dyke before his duet with Shawn, but the chatting was cut.  The "Tea For Two" segment taped the day before (July 29th) with Steve Allen was also deleted because it was such a success that it was decided to have him as an actual guest on a future episode and not just a cameo.

The show aired on December 15, 1963.

"Good Times" is a disco soul song by American R&B band Chic from their third album Risqué (1979). It ranks 68th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and has become one of the most sampled tunes in music history, most notably in hip hop music. Originally released with "A Warm Summer Night" on the B-side, it was reissued in 2004 with "I Want Your Love" on the B-side, a version which was certified Silver in the UK.
The lyrics include a reference to Milton Ager's "Happy Days Are Here Again". It also contains lines based on lyrics featured in "About a Quarter to Nine" made famous by Al Jolson. Nile Rodgers has stated that these Great Depression-era lyrics were used as a hidden way to comment on the then-current economic conditions in the United States.
In a 2015 interview Rodgers stated that "Good Times" was partly inspired by the 1974 Kool & The Gang song "Hollywood Swinging".
Cash Box praised the "excellent production" and "bright, sassy female vocals." Record World said that "cuddly vocals, crystalline piano & production equal 'good times.'"
The song hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 18, 1979, before being ousted by The Knack's smash hit "My Sharona" the following week. Along with the songs "My Forbidden Lover" and "My Feet Keep Dancing", "Good Times" reached #3 on the disco chart. It reportedly sold more than 5 million copies, making it, at the time, the best-selling 45 rpm single in the history of Atlantic Records. Billboard named "Good Times" the number one soul single of 1979.

"Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is a 1969 song recorded by Sly and the Family Stone. The song, released as a double A-side single with "Everybody Is a Star", reached number one on the soul single charts for five weeks, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 19 song of 1970.
The title is an intentional mondegreen or sensational spelling for "thank you for letting me be myself again." The third verse contains specific references to the group's previous successful songs, "Dance to the Music", "Everyday People", "Sing a Simple Song", and "You Can Make It If You Try". The song features co-lead vocals from Sly Stone, Rose Stone, Freddie Stone, Cynthia Robinson, Jerry Martini, Greg Errico and Larry Graham. On this song, Graham was widely credited with introducing the slap technique on the electric bass, which is heard prominently throughout the track.
"Thank You" was intended to be included on an in-progress album with "Star" and "Hot Fun in the Summertime"; but the LP was never completed, and the three tracks were instead included on the band's 1970 Greatest Hits LP. "Thank You" and "Star", the final Family Stone recordings issued in the 1960s, marked the beginning of a 20-month gap of releases from the band, which would finally end with the release of "Family Affair" in 1971.
The song's length on the original hit single and the Greatest Hits LP is 4:48 and was re-channeled to simulate stereo on the popular Greatest Hits LP. The previously unreleased full-length version (6:18) was mixed by Bob Irwin in true stereo and its only issue was on a 1990 Columbia promotional CD Legacy: Music for the Next Generation. On the subsequent (and available as of 2015) The Essential Sly & The Family Stone 2-CD set, the track is in stereo but is the standard 4:48 length hit version.
The song was ranked number 410 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Janet Jackson's 1989 signature song "Rhythm Nation" is based on a guitar sample from the song.
The song was followed by a re-working on the closing track, "Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa", from the group's subsequent 1971 album, There's A Riot Goin' On.

1978......#1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 U.S. Cash Box Top 100, #3 UK Singles Chart, #2 Canada, #2 New Zealand

"Boogie Oogie Oogie" is a song by the American band A Taste of Honey from their 1978 self-titled debut album. Released as their debut single in the summer of 1978, the song became an extremely popular "crossover" disco song. It topped the American pop, soul and disco charts, and it became the first certified platinum single in the history of Capitol Records for selling over two million copies. It also became one of the most recognizable songs from the disco era. The lyrics beseech listeners to "boogie oogie oogie, till you just can't boogie no more".
The group was awarded two platinum records for the single and the album, and they won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 20th Grammys on February 15, 1979.

"When a Man Loves a Woman" is a song written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright and first recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966 at Norala Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama.
Released by Atlantic Records in April 1966, Sledge's recording reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts, becoming the first number 1 hit recorded in Muscle Shoals. It is also one of seven number 1 hits to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 100. The single was also a top ten hit in the UK reaching number four on its initial release and ultimately peaking at number two in 1987 on the UK Singles Chart after it was featured in a Levi's Jeans commercial. The Percy Sledge version is listed 53rd in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Also in 1987, it was reissued in the US to promote the soundtrack album for Oliver Stone's film Platoon.

“My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder, which is the #1 song in the Top 10 today, is blocked on YouTube so I had to take that segment out. Sorry about that. Full episodes with so many songs can be tricky. Anyways, everything else in the episode is here…Enjoy!

Posting these clips continues to be a huge blast for me and I sincerely hope you’re enjoying them too. Thank you for watching and for all of your great comments. I love hearing about your memories, thoughts, and insights. This will be my last post for a while (a little summer break), but I look forward to returning soon. Until then…”bye-bye, so long, farewell”

Welcome back to 1963!

Unfortunately, whoever was in charge of filming this kinescope cut out quite a bit including the Top 10, the Spotlight Dance and today’s guests. Gene Pitney sang “Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa” and Sunny and the Sunglows sang “Talk to Me”. At least we finally get to hear Barbara Warchol speak in the Record Review.

The starting segment, where they are setting up the studio, was actually taped in 1961. (close enough to ‘63, lol)

This has been mentioned a few times here before, but another one of the upcoming stops for “Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars” is Dallas, Texas on November 22.

On the Billboard Hot 100 today:
1) Sugar Shack – Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs
2) Deep Purple – Nino Tempo and April Stevens
3) Washington Square – The Village Stompers
4) It’s All Right – The Impressions
5) Mean Woman Blues – Roy Orbison

11) She’s A Fool – Lesley Gore
42) Blue Guitar – Richard Chamberlain
96) Stop Monkeyin’ Aroun’ – The Dovells

More colorized and b&w full episodes and colorized clips are coming!

Please stop monkeyin’ aroun’ and get your Covid shot. Thank you to everyone who has already done so. Also, thank you for wearing your masks and thank you for watching!
