Yesterday it was 10 years since Whitney Houston's untimely death. We commemorate her with this rare video, broadcast in the Netherlands on April 19, 1985 during Whitney's first promotional visit to the Netherlands. She was 21 at the time.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 200 million records worldwide. Houston's vocal performances, as well as her prominence on the MTV and popular music charts, have influenced many African American artists.

Houston began singing in church as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. She is the only artist to have seven consecutive number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, from "Saving All My Love for You" in 1985 to "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" in 1988. Houston's third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and yielded two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, the title track "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "All the Man That I Need".

Whitney Houston visited the Netherlands in March 1985 just 2 weeks after the USA release of her first album 'Whitney Houston'. This performance in AVRO tv show 'Show van de maand' with Dutch singer Liesbeth List was broadcast on April 19, 1985 and was her second tv performance worldwide!

Richard Paul Astley (born 6 February 1966) is an English singer, songwriter and radio personality, who has been active in music for several decades. He gained worldwide fame in the 1980s, having multiple hits including his signature song "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Together Forever" and "Whenever You Need Somebody", and returned to music full-time in the 2000s after a 6-year hiatus. Outside his music career, Astley has occasionally worked as a radio DJ and a podcaster.

Born and raised in Lancashire, Astley became a musician after leaving school, as the drummer for the soul band FBI. Three years later, he rose to fame through his association with the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman; releasing the 1987 album Whenever You Need Somebody, which sold 15.2 million copies worldwide. His debut single "Never Gonna Give You Up" was a number 1 hit single in 25 countries, winning the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Single.
His 1988 single "Together Forever" became his second single to top the US Billboard Hot 100, and was one of his eight songs to reach the top ten on the UK Singles Chart. The title track was a No 1 single in seven countries, and it reached No 3 in the UK. In 1988, Astley followed-up his debut album with Hold Me In Your Arms. The lead single "She Wants to Dance with Me" was Astley's first single that he wrote himself, and it became a worldwide top 10 hit.

Tavares had a number one hit in the Netherlands. In December 2021 they are at spot no. 876 in the Top 2000 in the Netherlands.

Tavares (also known as The Tavares Brothers) is an American R&B, funk and soul music group composed of five Cape Verdean-American brothers. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, they would later move to New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Tavares is:

• Chubby - Antone Lee Tavares, born 2 June 1945.

• Pooch - Arthur Lee Tavares, born 12 November 1943.

• Ralph - Ralph Viera Tavares, born 10 December 1942.

1975 turned out to be their most successful year chartwise, with a Top 40 Pop album (In the City), the No. 25 hit "Remember What I Told You to Forget", and their biggest hit, the Top 10 Pop/No. 1 R&B smash "It Only Takes a Minute", which was later successfully covered by both Jonathan King and Take That, and sampled by Jennifer Lopez. They parlayed this success into a spot as an opening act for The Jackson 5. KC and The Sunshine Band was also on this tour. "Minute" was followed by a string of hits: "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" (1976), "Don't Take Away the Music" (1976), and "Whodunit" (1977, another No. 1 R&B hit).
'Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel' was no. 1 in the Netherlands Top 40 in 1976.

"S.O.S." is a song from the Swedish pop group ABBA– Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus. It was their second single from their album ABBA. The song, first called 'Turn me on', was later recorded by Agnetha Fältskog as a solo artist. She sang the song in Swedish on her solo album 'Elva kvinnor i ett hus' (1975). "S.O.S." is written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and manager Stig Anderson. The title was chosen by Stig. The texts he had offered were rewritten by Ulvaeus. The song reached #2 in the Dutch Top 40 in June 1975. It also reached the Top2000 in 1999 and stayed in the Top2000 for all consecutive years. This is the last recording made by Toppop of ABBA. It was first broadcast on 13 June 1975. Forty years after the bitter songs written in the wake of two band divorces for their last album, 1981’s The Visitors, the Swedish pop quartet reunited for Voyage, an album of brand new songs that were released on 5 November 2021.

The Jackson 5, later known as the Jacksons, were an American pop band composed of members of the Jackson family. The group was founded in 1964 in Gary, Indiana by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine, with younger brothers Marlon and Michael Jackson joining soon after.
"Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" is a song of their 1978 album Destiny, and released as a single in 1979. It peaked at No. 7 in the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1979.
The chorus "let's dance/let's shout (shout)/shake your body down to the ground" was inspired by an ad-lib from Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up": "Let's dance/let's shout (shout)/gettin' funky's what it's all about"
On 31 March 1979 it reached #3 in the Dutch Top 40.

"River Deep - Mountain High," recorded by Tina Turner, was written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, and the legendary Phil Spector. This track weaves together elements of devotion, resilience, and an unyielding determination to conquer all obstacles in the name of love.
During the recording process, Tina Turner's commitment to delivering an exceptional performance was unwavering. In Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Songs, she revealed the sheer intensity of the recording sessions, stating, "I must have sung that 500,000 times. I was drenched with sweat. I had to take my shirt off and stand there in my bra to sing." Such was the level of dedication Turner poured into the song, leaving an indelible mark on her artistic journey. "River Deep - Mountain High" expressed a love that surpassed the boundaries of any river or mountain. This overwhelming devotion resonated deeply with audiences, capturing their hearts and leaving an enduring impression. Interestingly, this sentiment would later reappear in the Motown classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," recorded in 1967 by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrel, further solidifying the universal appeal of such profound emotional connections. Bob Marley and the Wailers were in the Netherlands during his "Rastaman Vibrations" tour for his first Dutch concert in the Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam on June 13, 1976, the first of the five concerts Marley ever gave in the Netherlands. During this concert 'Roots, Rock, Reggae' was the last song on the set and 'Positive Vibration' was the first encore. The concert ended with 'Get Up Stand Up / War / No More Trouble'.
Fortunately, the Toppop recordings have been preserved. They have been used by director Kevin Macdonald for his famous and acclaimed documentary about Bob Marley, entitled 'Marley' from 2012.
This exclusive Toppop video was recorded in a studio in Nederhorst den Berg near Hilversum in June 1976.
The recording is, as most Toppop videos, a lip-synch recording.
Bunny Wailer is not in this video as he left the Wailers two years earlier.

Blondie is an American rock band co-founded by singer Debbie Harry, and guitarist Chris Stein. The band were pioneers in the American punk and then the new wave scene of the mid-1970s in New York. Its first two albums contained strong elements of these genres, and although highly successful in the United Kingdom and Australia, Blondie was regarded as an underground band in the United States until the release of Parallel Lines in 1978. Over the next three years, the band achieved several hit singles including "Heart of Glass", "Call Me", "Rapture" and "The Tide Is High". The band became noted for its eclectic mix of musical styles incorporating elements of disco, pop, reggae, and early rap music.

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), widely known by her stage name based on her married name Donna Summer, was an American singer, songwriter and actress. She gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Summer was the first artist in history to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the United States Billboard 200 chart and charted four number-one singles in the US within a 12-month period. Summer has reportedly sold over 130 million records worldwide, making her one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. She also charted two number-one singles on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in the US and a number-one single in the United Kingdom.
Love To Love You Baby' was her first big international hit. Produced by Pete Bellotte, and written by Italian musician Giorgio Moroder, Summer, and Bellotte, the song was first released as a single in the Netherlands on June 1975 as "Love to Love You" and then released worldwide on November 1975 as "Love to Love You Baby". It became one of the first disco hits to be released in an extended 12" form.

Dutch singer Alides Hidding (Schoonoord, January 30, 1954) was lead singer in funkgroup the Time Bandits and scored solo hits under his own name. Time Bandits was best known in the eighties when they had several hits, also abroad. Hidding was characterized, among other things, by his high voice (so-called head voice). After the disintegration of the Time Bandits, Hidding started to write songs for among others Dan Hartman. In 2004 he participated with Barbara Dex in the Belgian preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. The song 'One life' ended in third place behind winner Xandee and Natalia Druyts. Alides Hidding lives in Ravels, Belgium. He performs both solo and with the band Time Bandits. He also performs in various theater productions. In August 2008 he re-released the song 'Live it up' in collaboration with DJ Johan Gielen. In January 2012 he participated in the SBS6 talent show The Winner. In 2012 he started writing again with Åke Danielson a new album from the Time Bandits. This resulted in the album Out of the blue. Hidding still perdorms with his songs. This video was recorded by TROS TOP 50 on 16 May 1980.

In the song, John describes his crush on a person called Nikita, an East German border guard whom he cannot meet because he is not allowed into the country. It features George Michael on backing vocals and Nik Kershaw on guitar.
The song charted at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and at number 7 in the US.
In the Netherlands it reached the Top 40 on 9 November 1985 de Top 40 and kept the number one position for 9 weeks..

Grace Beverly Jones OJ (born 19 May 1948) is a Jamaican model, singer and actress. In 1999, she ranked 82nd on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and in 2008, she was honored with a Q Idol Award. Jones influenced the cross-dressing movement of the 1980s and has been an inspiration for artists including Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Solange, Lorde, Róisín Murphy, Brazilian Girls, Nile Rodgers, Santigold, and Basement Jaxx. In 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 40th greatest dance club artist of all time.

Beginning in 1977, Jones embarked on a music career, securing a record deal with Island Records and initially becoming a star of New York City's Studio 54-centered disco scene.
