Led Zeppelin’s Disastrous Reunion (Live-Aid)

Live Aid in 1985 was a charity concert that was held simultaneously in the UK and America and was put together to help fight the famine in Ethriopia that had been documented the previous year. I don’t think i’ve ever shared this with you guys, but I used to live in ethiopia when i was younger. Yes, i know i’m quite worldly. Live Aid 1985 was the site of several high profile reunions including Black Sabbath, Crosby Still Nash and Young. But that wasn’t what most fans were looking forward to. The charity concert was also the site of the most anticipated reunion was one involving ¾ members of the led zeppelin with drummer phil collins. The performance that day would be remembered as a complete disaster even by the members themselves and today we’re going to explore the stories.

Led Zeppelin would break up in 1980 following the death of drummer john bonham the band would disband. The band would reunite for the first time in 1985 after Live Aid organizer Bob Geldoff convinced the surviving members to appear at the Phildaelphia concert at john f kennedy stadium. . The band would play through a 20 minute long set consisting of three of their classic songs including Rock and Roll, Whole Lotta Love, and Stairway to Heaven. Tony Thompson and Phil Collins filled in on the drums for the performance.

The performance was not remembered for the right reasons.

The performance was marred by a myriad of problems. Bassist john paul jones flew in the day of the show and the band only spent an hour rehearsing the same day. Couple this with the fact that the monitors were acting up and the members couldn’t hear themselves or each other and when guitarist jimmy page was handed a guitar on stage it was out of tune. Couple this with frontman Robert Plant’s vocal problems and it was a performance fans had hoped for.

Frontman Robert Plant would tell Rolling stone 3 years after Live AId . “Emotionally, I was eating every word that I had uttered. And I was hoarse. I’d done three gigs on the trot before I got to Live Aid. We rehearsed in the afternoon, and by the time I got onstage, my voice was long gone.” with Jimmy Page adding years later My main memories, really, were of total panic. John Paul Jones arrived virtually the same day as the show and we had about an hour’s rehearsal before we did it. And that sounds like a bit of a kamikaze stunt, really, when you think of how well everyone else was rehearsed.”

Phil Collins would write about the performance in his book writing I knew the wheels are falling off from early on in the set. I can’t hear Robert clearly from where I’m sat, but I can hear enough to know that he’s not on top of his game. If I’d known it was to be a two-drummer band, I would have removed myself from proceedings long before I got anywhere near Philadelphia.” He would tell q magazine in 2014 in a separate interview "I thought it was just going to be low-key and we'd all get together and have a play.
"But something happened between that conversation and the day - it became a Led Zeppelin reunion. I turned up and I was a square peg in a round hole."
Adding "Robert was happy to see me, but Jimmy wasn't. You could sense I wasn't welcome.
"If I could have walked off, I would have done. But then we'd all be talking about why Phil Collins walked off Live Aid - so I just stuck it out.

While many including some of the band members blamed Collins for at least part of the poor performance with Jimmy Page telling the Sunday Times “The drummer couldn’t get the beginning of ‘Rock And Roll’,”” So we were in real trouble with that. "But at the end of the day, he didn't know anything. We played 'Whole Lotta Love', and he was just there bashing away cluelessly and grinning. I thought that was really a joke."

Collins would blame a lack of rehearsal time as reported by new musical express stating “I didn’t rehearse when I got there, but I listened to ‘Stairway To Heaven’ on Concorde,” he said. “I arrived and went to the caravans, and Robert said: ‘Jimmy Page is belligerent’.”

When people who appear on album covers end up suing the band for using their likeness or image it usually comes down to whether a release was signed, but it’s rare that another element is thrown in. That’s what happened to band Vampire Weekend and that’s what were going to discuss in today’s video.

Vampire Weekend would form in 2006, by four students attending columbia university . Their first album, which was self-titled would come out in 2008, and sold nearly 600,000 copies, impressive by indie standards. The band soon landed on the cover of Spin magazine and the band would release their second album through label XL Records titled Contra in 2010. The album cover featuring a polaroid of a girl . The photo was found by one of the band members who used the search terms ‘New York City 1983’ on Flickr.

It was around the time of the album’s release that the band’s frontman Ezra Koenig (kay-nig) would tell pitchfork why they chose the photo for the album cover saying “the first expression that I read into her was some sort of hesitation. We had a lot of discussions trying to figure out how old this person was when the picture was taken-- she could be 15 or 27. The ambiguity of her age and expression made me feel like she was on the cusp of something, which really matches the vibe of the new album. When asked who she was he would add “I don't want to give away all the details about the photo just yet, but I learned that she's now living in Malibu.”

The band had offered the owner of the photo Tod Brody on flickr $5,000 to use the photo on their album cover believing since Brody posted it on the site he owned the copyright to it. Brody claimed to have taken the photo during a casting session for a television commercial several decades prior.

The photo of the woman on the album cover was heavily used to market the record. A few months after the album came out, the band and XL Recordings their label were hit with a 2 million lawsuit by the woman on the cover. The woman on the cover was named Ann Kirsten Kennis She would claim the photo was used without her permission.

Kennis for her part was already used to people using her likeness and image to sell products. She had enjoyed a modelling career where her image was used to sell products for L’Oréal, Revlon, Fabergé, and Vaseline to name a few. These instances didn’t result in a lawsuit. She signed a release and received a payment for her services.

Contra would hit number 1 in america on the album charts and charted throughout the rest of the world.. Kennis only became aware of the record after her daughter saw a banner ad online from barnes and noble advertising the album. Kennis for her part, had never heard of Vampire weekend before or even knew the photographer who claimed to own the rights to the picture.

For Kennis, It was a moment of rebirth for her as she was now retired from modeling after 10 years in the industry. She would meet her husband after developing something called Space Bear teddy bears, which are now called cosmic cubs club. By the time Kennis saw her photo she had just completed her last session of chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Once Kennis became aware of her image being used on the album cover it became inescapable as she went about her day to day business. As she strolled through new york city she’d see posters of the album around the city, she’d hear Vampire Weekend playing in clothing stores she visited and. She’d even learn from reading the new york times that the band was using the image during their live shows. Friends of the former model from as far as Europe would claim to have seen her image in advertisements for the album in their country too

According to Kennis the photo was taken back in 1983. She claimed that the release forms that are typically signed for these photos was not signed by herself, but rather forged.

Guns N’ Roses would rule the world from 1988-1993 releasing several huge albums including Appetite for Destruction and the Use Your Illusion Records. Following the Use your illusion tour in 1993, the band struggled to write new material. The band cobled together a covers album that was put out in 1993 tilted the spaghetti incident and the following year they released a cover of the rolling stone’s song sympathy for the devil for the film interview with the vampire. By 1995 Slash released his side project Slash’s snakepit, signalling the end of his working relationship with frontman Axl Rose for nearly 20 years. He would leave the band the following year and would be followed by bassist Duff McKagan in 1997 and drummer Matt Sorum would be fired by Rose the same year. By 1998 Rose was the last man standing from the 80’s lineup of the band. He had to assemble a new band and while a lot of people came and went over the next 2 decades, one of the more interesting members to join the band was guitarist Buckethead. Today, let’s take a look at his time in the band.

It was frequently reported in the press in the early to mid 90’s that frontman Axl Rose was not just a fan of hard rock music, but more alternative bands including Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails. When Guns N’ Roses began workign on their proper follow up to 1991’s use your illusion it was reported that Rose wanted the band’s music to grow and evolve, while guitarist Slash wanted to stay closer to the band’s hard rock sound. Perhaps Rose gave us a sneek peak of where his mind was at when he put out the head scratching tune My World on Use your illusion 2. In 1995 Slash who was doing press for Slash’s Snakepit revealed where Axl’s mind was at the time musically saying to metal hammer There was a point there where Axl goes: 'I'm gonna do a solo record, and I'm gonna get Trent Reznor and Dave Navarro, and [Dave Grohl,] the drummer from Nirvana...' and so on. And it's like, he doesn't even know half of these people. He's just pulling them out of the sky." (Slash, Metal Hammer, 11/95)

In a separate interview with Canadian Radio Slash would state the same year "Then [Axl] decided his solo-project he could do with Guns, which I was like, after doing all those videos and this and that and the other, I was like: "No". [laughs] No, I don't wanna get involved in any kind of Stephanie Seymour ballads or any of that shit.

As Axl assembled his new lineup of GUns N’ Roses in the late 90’s he would bring in nine inch nails guitarist Robin Finck, who played with the band in 1998 and 1999, but he would depart the group just before the millennium leaving the band without a guitarist. While future guitarist Richard Fortus was asked to audition it would fall through with him recalling to "I was scheduled to ultimate guitar They called and said, 'Yeah, we want to fly you out this week.' I was going to be there anyway doing sessions, so I could do it at that time. They said, 'Perfect.' I didn’t hear back from them, so I just figured, 'Well, it must not be happening.'" (Richard Fortus, Ultimate Guitar, 11/26/08). In a separate interview with TImes Union he would state
"Before that audition happened, Axl saw Buckethead play, and he decided to go with him instead

Fortus wouldn’t join the band until 2002 and still plays with them to this day. As for how Buckethead joined, Rose wasn’t sure how to get a hold of the guitarist, but Guns N’ Roses drummer at the time Josh Freese knew Buckethead and helped Rose track him down. Freese would reveal to podmotaic that he had heard that buckethead was up in san francisco hanging out with the band Primus so Freese would place a call to Primus manager Dave Lefkowitzrecalling the conversation he had with Lefkowitz The first thing I was like, "Do you think Buckethead would be into this, he's such a quirky, weird, artiste?" And Dave goes, "Yeah, I think he is tired of the starving artist routine, I think he is ready to make a living"."

I’ve covered a few stories on people who appeared on some pretty memorable albums or album covers and the stories behind the shoots and where those subjects are at today. One of my subscribers suggested doing the story on the scantily clad woman on the front cover of the Deftones sop****re record around the fur. And here were are today. So let’s find out the story behind the album cover and who the woman is and what she’s up to today.

Released in 1997 by the alternative metal, act The Deftones their record Around the Fur would be put out on madonna’s label Maverick records. Another act I talked about who was signed to Maverick was candlebox. I’ve done a whole video on their career, the link is down below. Around the Fur would produce two hits in My Own Summer (Shove it) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away). The album would go platinum nearly 14 years after its release. Revolver magazine wrote a pretty great piece on the story of the album cover and the website Pousta interviewed the photographer and model who appeared in the photo.

The cover would be shot by photographer Rick Kosick, whose credits included MTV’s jackass and wild boyz. Both The Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter were fans of the photographer. Kosick would tell Revolver how he got the gig I know Chino was really into skateboarding at the time, and Steph has always been into BMX," Kosick tells Revolver. "At the time, I was doing a lot of rock shots, too. They thought I was the right guy for the job, so everything fell into place.

Kosick would fly up to seattle to shoot the band in the studio, but he always also invited to a party with the band and some groupies. Kosick would tell revolver"They were having this after-hours party with all these chicks hanging out in the Jacuzzi," he explains. "I just happened to take a photo of a girl at, like, 4 o'clock in the morning. I don't even know who she is—she was just a groupie, I think. I just saw herand was like, Damn, I gotta photograph this. Kosick would only take one shot of the woman with a fish eye lens and it’s his feet you see on the album cover next to her. Kosick would claim the woman on the cover wasn’t happy with the photographer with him recalling to revolver She made some comment about being too close to her boobs. So I took the photo, walked away, and never spoke to her again. I know they found her and got her to sign a release, though." For his work Kosick would get a gold record from the band.

As for the woman her named is Lisa Hughes. She would give her first interview since appearing on the album cover in 2017. During the interview she would claim to be really proud of being on the album cover telling Pousta a little about herself saying and i quote
She would recall how she first heard about the band wanting to use her photo recalling “Well funny thing, I didn’t have a computer at the time and I received a call from Stephen (Carpenter) asking if I would allow them to use the photo for the cover. I wanted to see it first, but had a hard time getting a good copy, so I had Maverick Records fax it to me. It was a little dark and hard to see. But I said yes for sure use it. I didn’t have doubts, I was excited!”

There would be rumors that she was upset that the photographer was invading her space by taking the top down photo but she brushed these assertions off in the same interview.

Since appearing on the album cover Hughes would stay in touch with STephen from the Deftones but in more recent years lost touch with him.

Released in 1998, Godsmack’s first album, which riginally self released as All Wound Up, until the band signed a major recording deal to Universal and Republic Records. They would soon re-release the album as a self titled release. Gracing the cover was a mysterious pierced and woman along with a logo I always shared some similarities with Alice in Chains. Not to mention the name Godsmack, the name of a track taken off Alice in Chains hugely popular 1992 Dirt album. I found it funny when drummer Shannon Larkin claimed the band were not influenced by Alice in Chains saying they are not clones of the band telling the Reno Gazette Journal “I don't hear it. I was never a big ALICE IN CHAINS fan. Layne's (Staley of ALICE IN CHAINS) voice is amazing, but I never heard it. If somebody said GODSMACK sounds like METALLICA, I could totally hear that. Sully sounds like (METALLICA's James) Hetfield to me. I guess there's a darkness to the harmonies that sounds like Layne and Jerry (Cantrell),but to me it's still apples and oranges."

Getting back to the story. . Who was the woman on the cover,, was she real and if so what is she up today? That’s what were going to explore along with the controversy involving the album and a disgruntled parent.

The woman on Godsmack’s debut album is a real person. Her name is Toni Tiller. She would be interviewed by Kerrang where she discussed how she got on the cover and what she’s up to today. She would admit to meeting the members of the band years after the shoot and how nice they were. She would tell Kerrang how she graced the album cover recalling "I was living in NYC and deeply involved in the club kid scene and so I had an interesting look going. I met a photographer in Brooklyn and we were trying a few things out for a project if his and we snapped that image. A few years later he was working with the band and they saw that in his book and liked it, so they purchased it for use. The next ting I know, my face everywhere. It was pretty strange, but I love weird stuff like that."

That image the band used was taken four years earlier in 1994. Tiller would admit she wasn’t a model and would help people out if they asked also admitting that one woman in new york made a doll of her. Surprisingly she would admit that being on the album’s cover never got her recognized in public, largely because of geography. She would admit there weren’t a lot of Godsmack fans where she lived at the time. So what’s she up to today? She would admit to Kerrang "Now I live in the woods, I'm bald, usually barefoot, and into a variety of stuff. Meditation, strange objects, cooking, esoteric studies, cacti, dollhouses, rugs, and artsy crap. In my spare time I have a reform school for rude kittens." Since doing the interview with Kerrang she has posted some photos showing her signing posters of the band’s debut album.

Let’s talk about the controversy behind the album. Released in august of 1998 the group’s debut record didn’t create any trouble for almost a year. In April of 1999 the album was certified gold in America moving half a million copies. Then in June of 1999 MTV reported that one, I’m not kidding one parent from Cleveland had bought the record for his kid and after going through the liner notes and lyrics, complained about the record citing objectionable artwork and lyrics. The artwork they objected to were pentagrams The album hadn’t been released with a parental advisory sticker and somehow made it’s way past the people who review albums for walmart and k-mart. The complaint resulted in the chains pulling the album off store shelves. Eventually the band agreed to play ball with walmart and put parental advisory stickers on the album with sully erna telling rolling stone "Our record has been in the marketplace for more than a year now without a parental advisory sticker and this is the one and only complaint. Stickers and lyrics are by nature subjective. We have decided to put a sticker on the record." "It's almost taunting kids to go out and get the record to see what we're saying on it. Erna would claim the controversy didn’t hurt the album commercially and he was probably right the album went 4x platinum just in America

While Oasis dominated the mid to late 90’s and were active during the 2000’s the relationship between the Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel was always frought with tension. The band called it quits in 2009 and I’ve done a whole video on the breakup the link is down below. The brothers would go off and do their own musical projects while taking shots at each other in the press. But the animosity between the pair and their consistent denials of a reunion ever taking place hasn’t stopped fans for hoping for them to share the stage again. Dave Grohl is admittedly a huge Oasis fan, so much so, that the band covered their song lyla in 2005 during an appearance on BBC’s Radio 1 and during a special warm up gig in London the same year. Drummer Taylor Hawkins echoed a similar sentiment to the New Musical Express revealing in 2016 “I’ll tell you something about Liam Gallagher,” When people talk about Freddie Mercury, they’re like ‘Oh my god, he’s so outrageous’ – a lot of people just skip past the actual thing of what it is that made them great. I watched that Oasis documentary [Supersonic] the other day, and there’s this part were he just sings ‘Champagne Supernova’ in one take in its entirety, and you just go ‘oh fuck’, you know, the reason we all liked him in the first place is because he’s a fucking good singer. He can fucking sing a rock ‘n’ roll song dude.”
“I hope him and his brother can get their shit together. I mean come on boys, everyone wants to see Oasis again, give us a break – come on!”
Foo Fighters would be joined by Liam Gallagher onstage in 2017 in San Bernardino, California alongside Joe Perry of Aerosmith at the CalJam Festival to perform the Beatles track Come Together. In 2018 Liam Gallagher would reveal to the new musical express that Foo Fighters wanted to collaborate with him saying “They keep texting me, man,” “They wanted to do one tune, but I dunno – I’ll do it one day, but I’m too busy doing this at the moment. But I do like them – I think Foo Fighters have got good tunes. I think Dave Grohl’s very talented, and so is the band.”

In the summer of 2019 Foo Fighters would headline the Reading Festival in England and it was during their set frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd that they should start a petition to get Oasis back together. Drummer Taylor Hawkins would tape a photo of the Gallagher brothers to his kick drum. When Hawkins took over singing duties for their cover of QUeen’s Under Pressure he brought up the Oasis reunion again and said the brothers had too much money to reunite. The statements related to Oasis reunion was met with thunderous applause from the crowd.

A few weeks later Noel Gallagher who was on tour in America with his band the High Flying Birds was playing a gig in California and reportedly told the crowd

In 2019, while taking a break from Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was out promoting his band Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders, he would stop by Radio X in the UK. It was during the interview Hawkins was asked about Oasis and the feud between the Gallagher brothers and which side he takes. He would reveal he was on frontman Liam’s side, largely due to Noel Gallagher’s attitude towards his band Foo Fighters and was not happy about the guitarist and singer’s songwriters comments about Grohl saying

So Noel Gallagher, who was opening up for Smashing Pumpkins in America, and first night he goes, ‘Let’s start a petition to get the Foo Fighters to break up.’ And I’m like, OK that’s kinda funny, whatever…”
“And then next night he goes, ‘If the drummer from Nirvana…’ – Now Noel, if you’re hearing this. He didn’t say it I said it. […] He didn’t even say Dave, you know as if to lower him – ‘… wants Oasis to get back together he can come up on this stage right now and suck my you know what…'”

Born in Fort Worth Texas, drummer Taylor Hawkins was the youngest of three siblings having a mother and father who seemed like polar opposites. According to Rolling Stone he would describe his father as and i quote “stony coldness, typical of a Seventies man,”, while mother was and i quote full of love, sweetness, and tenderness, and the total opposite of my dad.” His mother encouraged Taylor to become a musician.

His family would relocate to Laguna beach when he was 5 years old. Hawkins would tell the BBC that at the age of 10 he had a neighbour who had an old drum kit and a few beat up guitars and by this point in his life he didn’t excel at anything including academics and sports. Hawkins would admit that he initially wanted to play guitar but it seemed like too much work to him and his neighbour encouraged him to try the drums. After observing Hawkins play he would tell him and i quote “you’re a drummer.’

In December of 1995 Grohl would meet hawkins for the first time at the KROQ almost acoustic christmas concert where both foo fighters and alanis morisette were on the bill. Grohl would recall meeting hawkins for the first time saying ‘we got along like brothers from the second we met. We were best friends from that moment with taylor hawkins adding in the book ‘this is a call “i was this little dork playing in this back up band and the first thing that struck me was that dave was really nice and fun to hang out with. I’d met some other people from big bands musicians i’d looked up to and when i met them the vibe was oh you’re not important. Hawkins who was a huge fan of nirvana and foo fighters first record noticed a camaraderie and likeness between himself and grohl as they smoked together and talked about their favourite music. They would reconnect the summer of 1996 when they played some shows together in europe.Hawkins would admit that alanis morissette predicted he would join foo fighters at the time telling the Daily Mirror “We met the Foo Fighters when I was still playing with her, and she said, 'Dave [Grohl]’s gonna ask you to join them someday.' She called it a year before it happened."

The following year in 1997, Grohl was now without a drummer. He would call up hawkins to see if he knew any good drummers. Keep in mind foo fighters were still an up and coming band and were nowhere near as popular as they are today . Grohl would recall that conversation with hawkins “he said ‘f*** yeah i’ll do it. I reminded him we weren’t selling out stadiums like alanis and he said ‘i don’t care man i just want to be in a f***** rock band. To Hawkins alanis was a solo act and he wanted to play more hard rock music. The move surprised Grohl who told entertainment weekly I thought he would never leave Alanis’ band. At the time, they were packing stadiums around the world. And what, he’s going to jump in our red Dodge van and play the f**** Viper Room again?”

The on-boarding process for Hawkins wasn’t smooth though. The first day of rehearsals guitarist Pat Smear announced he was quitting the band telling Grohl and company they should consider being a three piece. The band was in a tough spot having already booked a tour and having their second album to promote.. For Smear he was tired of life on the road and was eldest band member. The band managed to talk smear to stay in the band for another six months until they found a replacement which they did in Grohl’s old scream bandmate Franz Stahl. ’ Taylor’s first show with foo fighters would happen on april 19, 1997 at a secret gig in santa monica at the alligator lounge. The band would spend the next year and a half on the road.

The band would get off the road in 1998 and Grohl gave some insights into where the band’s third record could go in the book this is a call “now i’m looking forward to our next record more than i ever have been. The band Nelson would be made up of twin brothers matthew and gunnar. While the pair would come on everyone’s radar in 1990 with their record After the Rain. They were one of the last so called hair metal acts that would take off up before the whole scene came crashing down. Record label infighting, image and credibility problems hampered the band as well as changing musical trends that resulted in the band spending years in the studio without new music. Today let’s explore whatever happened to the band Nelson.

The Nelson brothers would be born to parents Kristy and Ricky Nelson who were in show business. Their father with whom both brothers had a close bond with was an accomplished musician.. Their show business roots ran deeper than their parents. Their grandparents were Ozzie and Harriet. Their aunt would be Pam Dawber from the show Mork and Mindy while their uncle is Mark Harmon from NCIS

The brothers would be born in 1967 in hollywood with Gunnar Nelson recalling in the book Nothing but a good time “We were there at the very epicenter of the birth of country rock at the troubadour when our dad ricky put together the stone canyon band. At the troubadour any night you could see Linda Rondstadt’s first band, Jackson Brown, Buffalo Springfield all that kind of stuff. That’s what Matt and i grew up watching our father doing. ”

Given their deep connection to hollywood it wasn’t surprising that the brothers went down the same path. The Nelson brothers would start playing instruments at age 6, did their first recording session at age 11 and played their first club shows in LA at age 12 under the monicker Strange Agent with another friend from school guitarist Joey Cathcart. Gunner would play drums, while Matthew would play bass and front the band. Not siloing themselves to any one particular genre of music Matthew Nelson would admit in the same book the brothers were friends with punk rockers, new wavers and rockabillies. The band cut their chops playing five nights a week around LA sharing the stage with acts including the Plimsouls, and the Go Go’s. But being a decade and a half younger than their counterparts playing the same club shows also exposed the brothers to the ugly side of fame and made little time to form friendships with Matthew Nelson recalling in the same book “They’re the scariest motherf** I’ve ever seen. I mean far scarier than any punkers or rivet heads, you know metal guys. These were scary people that sang really happy songs, but they were all heroin addicts . They would do stuff like sabotage your gear before a show cut your power cable or kick your amps to where they would blow a tube.

By the middle of the 80’s the band would rename themselves The Nelsons. Their father Ricky would die in a plane crash in 1985 on new years eve. His sons at the time were now 18 and the loss proved to be devastating to them. What made the loss hurt even more was that the brothers were supposed to join their father on the plane trip to a gig in texas, but their father called them up and suggested they fly commercial. They would opt to stay home.

Adding insult to injury was that the brothers found out about their father’s death through teh radio. It was a local rock station who was playing their father’s music which they found strange, until the DJ announced their father’s passing.

The brothers relationship with their mother was in sharp contrast to their father. When their father died he left the family with 4 million dollars in debt. Their mother did little to nurture her sons musical dreams, also hitting the bottle pretty hard with the brothers telling yahoo their mother was a narcissist. Their mother went as far as when the boys turned 18 to write them letters tellign them their were delusional for trying to become musicians with Matthew telling yahoo “Our mother made it very difficult for us to play music,” says Matthew. “She said we always reminded her of [Rick], and the business was horrible and it was ‘gonna take you down.’”

Best known as Kid Rock’s side kick or the hype man for his Twisted Brown Trucker Band, Joe C would meet the musician before he got famous But his time would be cut short suffering from a debilitating medical condition. Today, lets take a look at the life of Joe C

Joe C would be born Joe Calleja. At a young age he would be diagnosed with an intestinal disorder known as celiac’s disease. At the age of 4 he would be prescribed dozens of medications including a steroid known as prednisone that stunted his growth resulting in his adult height being 3 ft 9. He would describe to MTV his daily routine revealing "I'm stickin' to my diet and takin' my medicine on time. You know, it's ridiculous. I take 60 pills [a day]. Right off the bat, when I wake up, [I take] two pills. An hour later, 10 pills. Three hours later, I've got the tube [in my stomach], and I shoot something through there three hours later. Two hours later, I take two more, and then an hour later, 10, then shoot the tube three hours later [again]." He would admit to spin magazine he would give up his rockstar life if it mean he could live with celiac’s disease.

Joe C. was a big fan of kid rock attending several of his early shows in 1994 as they recounted to VH1 here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Yhcr-XETI&t=178s (37 Second mark - 56 second mark, 1 minute 2 second mark to 1 minute 46 second mark). Joe. C would tell Entertainment Weekly what the C stood for saying It’s just my last name, Calleja. But it also stands for ”chronic.” And ”chronical,” which is chronic. But it’s a different word.” The hype man wasn’t shy hiding his love for pot.

By this point in kid Rock’s career he had already released several albums but hadn’t yet hit big. In 1997 Kid Rock would sign with Atlantic Records with him putting out his fourth record Devil without a cause in 1998, which was a massive success moving 15 million copies. The record was notable because the musician moved away from his traditional hip hop sound blending together rap rock, nu metal and hard rock. Joe C would appear on the album as part of his backing band Twisted Brown Trucker. But due to his health issues Joe C didn’t spend a lot of time on the road with the band having to bow out by the late 1999. He would make several high profile appearances during this time appearing on the south park soundtrack and on the fox animated show the simpsons.

Several publications noted 1999 to be the year of htel little people with Verne Tryoer of Ausin Powers fame also being in the news. In fact Joe C would reveal to spin they were both friends and Troyer provided important emotional support when he felt down about his life. Despite that he also became the butt of jokes, most notably at the 1999 mtv vidoe music awards when Chris Rock who was host made some jokes at his expense as you can see here.

On the evening of NOvember 16th, 2000 spin magazine would report that Joe C who was staying at his parents house in Taylor, Michigan was complaiing about feeling cold and decided to call it a night. His father found him unresponsive the next morning. He was just 26 years old. His cause of death was complications due to celiac disease.

In a statement, Kid Rock — reported to be extremely shaken by C.'s death — said, "Family and friends are everything; without them, all of the fame and fortune means nothing. We have lost part of our family. Joey gave us, and the world, his love. He brought a smile to everyone who has ever known or seen him.
"In a world full of confusion, Joey made all of us laugh. No matter what color, religion, race, or beliefs we have, he made us all smile. He gave us the gift of joy. Joey, thank you. We will never forget you. We love you."

MTV news would report the following year that Joe C would be honored at Kid Rock’s upcoming live shows "We're going to do a nice tribute to him every night and try not to be selfish about it," Rock said backstage at the American Music Awards ceremony on Monday.

Steel Panther’s brand of rock n’ roll which pays homage to the rock greats of the 80’s has rubbed some people the wrong way, resulting in some words being exchanged between the band and their detractors. Today, let’s take a look at which people and groups have called out Steel Panther.

Nikki Sixx - Nikki Sixx has had his fair share of feuds over the year, but perhaps my favourite was the one with Steel Panther. The feud started when Steel panther were doing an interview with little punk people on their youtube channel and were asked which favourite rockstar of theirs they’d bring back from the dead as they stated here. IT was following the interview that music sites picked up on the comments and Nikki Sixx responded “The singer in steal panther [sic] can go f himself… wanna be band putting down @thevinceneil?” he tweeted. Adding that the band were backstabbers.

Steel panther toured with motley crue a few years earlier as Satchel telling Meltdown There are bands that hate our guts,”“We did a tour a few years ago with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe […] And Mötley Crüe – they hated us. They wanted to kill us. Every night they wanted to kill us.”

The feud only got more heated when the band tweeted hey siri what’s backstabbing and posted an old interview with Sixx from the mid 90’s after Neil left the band temporarily and the bassist made some disparaging remarks as he said here.

Then as recently as this year Monarch Films which has done a number of documentaries on rock bands that strangely enough used a photo of Steel Panther on their documentary of Motley Crue. Michael Starr would make note of the mistake on his instagram.

Eddie Trunk - Radio host Eddie “I know everybody and hung out with them’ trunk has long expressed his distaste for the band Steel Panther. It was during his show he was asked to name one band he never thought would make it and he singled out steel panther saying “It amazes me – the amount of shows and attention… They’ve gotten huge in England, but in America, they’re still basically a House of Blues-level band, but it always amazed me how popular Steel Panther got from what they started out as, which was a band called Metal School.
“They’re still a parody, a spoof, on ’80s rock. I think there’s a segment of their fanbase that isn’t even in on the joke, that is younger.
It was a year earlier he was a little more critical saying “I have nothing personal against anybody in the band. They are good people, they are good players and all that. But it’s a spoof. It’s an act. It’s mocking 80’s hard rock….“My time and energy are going to be invested into the bands from that era, that are still trying to make new, credible, real music. …

Music Critics and PC Culture- A few years ago Steel Panther guitarist Satchel would team up with TC Electronics to release a guitar pedal called the Expletive Melter. The online backlash which probably accounted for a a few hundred people called the band sexist and mysogistic was enough to get the company to pull the release and issue an apology so Steel Panther would release the pedal themselves. It was in 2019 the band would release their latest record in 2019 titled heavy metal rules. Some rock critics published scathing reviews of the album with New musical express writing that the album has and i quote “dumb guitar riffs”. You then had publications like Vice writing articles about what they described as and i quote ‘the sad cult of Steel Panther’
Stix Zadinia would publish a tweet addressing the hate writing o all the haters and critics who ripped on us (or ANY band ever):

I DARE you to write a song. I dare you to put it out to the world. I dare you to try and follow your dreams. I dare you to have real balls.

The 80’s were a really important decade for heavy metal albums and one of the most important records released during this time was Slayer’s 1986 record Reign in Blood, which brought them onto the radar of a lot of metal fans. The Rick Rubin produced LP was delayed due to a controversy involving the opening track ‘Angel of Death’, which we’re going to explore in today’s video.

Slayer would release their second album Hell Awaits in 1984 on metal blade records. For their follow up and third album the band would nab a deal with def jam records, an odd move at the time given that they were a hip hop label. But founder Rick Rubin was a metal fan and convinced the band to sign with him and made them the first rock act to sign to the label.

When it came to writing their third record Slayer would take a different approach with bassist and frontman Tom Araya telling metal hammer in 2012

“Everybody else was doing something slow,”. “Kerry [King, guitarist] and Jeff [Hanneman, guitarist] said that they didn’t want to do a slow record, they wanted to do something fast. They didn’t realise it was gonna be that fast…” The opening track of the album would be angel of death, which would be solely written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman who at the time had read several books about germany’s atrocities during world war 2.

Hanneman would tell author Paul Elliott the strange place he wrote the song recalling in his article for Loudersound ‘The last time I spoke to Hanneman, in 2009, he explained that Angel Of Death was written in a most unlikely setting – at the home of his girlfriend’s parents. He laughed about the bizarre nature of his creative process. “It’s weird. When I’m angry, the music doesn’t flow. But when I’m happy the evil comes out!”

Hanneman would spend his years on tour with the band visiting war museums, reading history books about world war 2 with kerry king remembering “Jeff was super intelligent about history—World War II became his thing,” Hanneman’s father was an American soldier during world war 2 and he would bring his son home medals and other items taken off the corpses of german soldiers. It was that fascination with Germany’s world war 2 history that landed the band in trouble. Angel of death would take its name from German Scientisit josef mengale who conducted horrific experiments on prisoner’s of war at auschwitz concentration camp.

Columbia records who was Def Jam’s distributors were already unhappy about the album’s cover which showed gentalia and the pope’s hat. When they saw the lyrics for angel of death they flat out rejected it. Rubin stood by the band and said no to removing the song. Columbia head Walter Yetnikoff would reportedly say according to Rolling Stone @My shareholders are all Jewish!”

Tom Araya would tell Team Rock in 2012 “All of a sudden, the record company doesn’t want to release the album because of this song,” “When Jeff brought in the song, we thought, ‘Wow, that’s really cool – [Mengele] was the guy that did all those crazy, terrible things.’ Then all of a sudden we discovered that people had a problem with that. We were, like, f. …'”

Def Jam would be forced to take the album to Geffen Records. Geffen was weary of being associated with the record and while they released it they didn’t list it on their release calendar and didn’t put their logo on the album. Many in the press picked up on the lyrics of the song with some criticizing the band for being sympathetic to the Germany’s world war 2 history. But this was a charge the band flat out denied, claiming the media misunderstood the song.

Hanneman would tell the LA Times in 1988 during a profile on the band I’m into German history. . . . It fascinates me. It’s not that I am one of them or that it’s a sympathetic song. It’s more like a documentary.”

In a separate interview Hanneman would recall “I know why people misinterpret it – it’s because they get this knee-jerk reaction to it,” “There’s nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily [Mengele] was a bad man, because to me – well, isn’t that obvious? I shouldn’t have to tell you that.”

Limp Bizkit were one of the biggest rock bands in 2001. They were all over rock radio and MTV and toured extensively. Limp Bizkit would have the distinct honor of being the last band to shoot on the World Trade Center prior to the attacks on 9/11. That’s what we’re going to discuss in today’s video.

Limp Bizkit’s third album, 2000’sChocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water would be the biggest album of the band’s career moving over 8 million copies in America. One of the single’s released from the record would be the song Rollin. . Whenever it hink of Rollin’ NHL Hitz 2002 always comes to my mind. But for the video for Rollin’ Limp Bizkit would shoot part of the video on the the top of the South Tower of the old World Trade Center in New York City. The shoot would happen in September of 2000, nearly a year before the 9/11 attacks. The music video would win the award for best rock video at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards which took place on September 6, 2001. Durst would reveal in an interview that the band received a letter from the World Trade Center on September 10, 2001 congratulating the group on winning the VMA and for thanking the band for featuring the towers in the video. Durst would tell MTV years later I had it framed. I found it very ironic, very bizarre that I received that letter on Monday, and Tuesday the [attacks occurred]. For me to have gotten to go to the top of such a great, powerful structure ... to have those people embrace me and let Limp Bizkit spend 22 hours on top of the World Trade Center doing what we do. ... And for it to be taken down? The structure itself means nothing to me. I don't believe in that structure being a symbol of power, of pride, of America. What means something to me is the people that were killed around and in that building innocently, for no reason except hatred. It overwhelms me. In 2014 guitarist Wes Borland would end up discussing the filming of the song’s video with FHM revealing “Boy, did the video for Rollin’ backfire. It was filmed on top of the World Trade Center. On 6 September 2001 we won an MTV Video Award [‘Best Rock Video’] for it and the staff at WTC sent over a fruit basket to congratulate us. After 9/11 everyone stopped playing it. Nobody wanted to see it. As Metallica began writing their follow up record to 1988’s And Justice For All they would go in a much more commercial direction, much to the chagrin of some of their longtime fans. The first song written for their new album would be a track called Enter Sandman, while strangely enough frontman James Hetfield wouldn’t come up with the lyrics until towards the later part of recording the album. The song would prove to be Metallica’s biggest single charting at number 16 on the billboard hot 100 charts. But immediately after the song’s release it drew comparisons to another band who had some strange relationship to metallica, that’s what were going to explore in today’s video.

In the summer of 1990 James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Metallica’s principle songwriters met to go through song ideas which they referred to as ‘the riff tapes.’ One of the riffs the pair heard on the riff tapes was the Enter Sandman a riff guitarist Kirk Hammett had come up with. Hammet would be inspired by Soundgarden’s album Louder Than Love telling Total Guitar

“Back in ’89 I’d just discovered this new musical movement coming out of the Seattle area,”. “I was listening to a lot of Soundgarden. I was pretty impressed with the rawness of their sound and how heavy it felt.One thing we spoke about as a band was how much we all like bouncy riffs. So I was just sitting there with my guitar at three o’clock in the morning, thinking: ‘Soundgarden, bounce, flattened fifths…’ Almost simulating my mind to those sounds. And then this riff came out and I thought, ‘Whoah, that works!'

The band had previously worked with Flemming Rasmussen. They would enlist Motley Crue, The Cult and Bon Jovi producer Bob Rock to work on their follow up to And Justice For All. Some feared what Bob Rock would do to the band’s sound but Hetfield brushed off those concerns saying Some people thought Bob would make us sound too commercial,” said James Hetfield. “You know: ʻOh, Bob works with Bon Jovi, Bob works with Mötley Crüe.ʼ But if Flemming Rasmussen worked on a Bon Jovi record, would Bon Jovi all of a sudden sound like Metallica?”
Rock was known for being outspoken producer telling Uncut “I really didn’t give a shit, to be honest,” “When they started doing things the way they had always done, I just gave [songs] back to them. They were quite taken aback. When they’d do stupid things I’d call them on it. Lars would show up really late and I’d say, ‘What a f***** ahole you are…’ I don’t think people did that to them before.”

The original lyrics for Enter Sandman were centered around any new parents worst nightmare, sudden infant death syndrome with the line ‘off to never land’ originally being written as ‘disrupt the perfect family’. . The lyrics were flat out rejected by Ulrich and Rock who thought they were too grotesque. Hetfield would tell guitar world “That pissed me off so much!” “I was like, 'Fuck you! I'm the writer here!' But that was the first challenge from someone else and it made me work harder."
Hetfield would change the lyrics to write the song about childhood nightmares with him telling Uncut in 2007 "I wanted more of the mental thing where this kid gets manipulated by what adults say. And you know when you wake up with that s--t in your eye? That's supposedly been put in there by the sandman to make you dream. So the guy in the song tells this little kid that and he kinda freaks. He can't sleep after that and it works the opposite way. Instead of a soothing thing, the table's turned." The title Enter Sandman had already been kicked around by the band for nearly half a decade.
Released as the first single on Metallica’s self titled or black album on July 29, 191 it would usher in a new era for Metallica. Grunge would dominate the music scene in the early 90’s and one of the band’s who was a frequent presence on MTV and on rock radio was Pearl Jam. Perhaps no video is more popular for Pearl Jam than Jeremy from their debut album Ten. Despite the song’s dark subject matter and controversial video, it received heavy rotation on MTV, is still frequently played on rock radio where I live and is the band’s most viewed video on YouTube. But whatever happened to the kid who starred in the video, well fame proved to be difficult to deal with and he would find a different path in life, His life would be cut short due to a tragic accident. That’s whjat were going to explore in today’s video

To celebrate the video’s 25th anniversary, Billboard Magazine would write a very indepth article on Trevor Wilson, the young actor who portray’s Jeremy in the music video. The publication would interview Mark Pellington who directed the video for Pearl Jam and Wilson’s parents who discuss a man who felt the same way about fame as the members of Pearl Jam did.

The video lyrics for Jeremy would be inspired by a real life event that happened at a Dallas school in 1991 when a boy who was bullied by his kids at school ended his life in front of his classmates. Director Mark Pellington would tell Billboard that Wilson was sick when he sent in his audition tape, but despite this he clinched the audition the second he walked in recalling "He was sick on his tape, and he didn’t play it like, 'Oh, I’m all angsty,'". "He was sitting there and I was looking at [his audition tape], and he was kind of dazed and numb and f--ked up. I found out later that he was sick. But he was so expressive, in a non-histrionic way." WIlson’s mother Diane would point to the fact that her son suffered from Asthma, something that may have influenced how he acted and looked the day of the audition. she would tell billboard that had she been at the audition chances are she wouldn’t have let her son go because she wasn’t a fan of firearms. Ironically MTV rejected the first cut of the video because they didn’t want any firearms shown in the video, much to the shagrin of the video’s director and the band.

Wilson’s mother Diane worked with people in show business while living in new york. His mother was a chef to well known celebrities including director Ridley Scott, talk show host phil donahue and actress michelle pfeifffer. Wilson would attend the Rudolf Steiner Waldorf School in Manhattan while spending his weekends at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. It would be the 1986 film Stand By Me that got Wilson interested in acting and one of Diane’s clients who saw potential in her son and suggested he try acting classes.

Wilson’s father accompanied his son to the audition after reading about it in the backpages of Billboard magazine. His son had already done a few auditions for other projects, but that was it. While he was waiting for his son to be called he overheard someone say and i quote “He has to have a good scream,” so he pinched his son’s leg until he let out a big scream and went over the lyrics of the song with him to help him better understand the character. Wilson got the audition beating out 200 other applicants. The original plan was not to feature Pearl Jam at all in the video, but Pellington decided against that after spending several days shooting the band in London.

After the video shoot wrapped up Wilson and his family went on vacation and relocated from New York to Los Angeles. By the time Wilson’s family was now living in Los Angeles Jeremy’s video had premiereed on MTV and feeling something seismic happen, they started to sense something big was happening with his Father recalling to Billboard . “Once we moved there, he started getting all this fan mail, and he went on this radio talk show [with Dr. Drew Pinsky] — and women were calling in and saying they’d like to take him to bed… just boxes and boxes of fan mail,” Wilson soon became recognizable to a lot of places he went with his father adding “After a few months of that attention, he kind of turned away.” with his mother adding

While promoting his 2005 record The Great Divide, Scott Stapp would make an appearance on the show Casino Cinema which was hosted by howard stern’s wife Beth Stern. A noticeably drunk Stapp was pretty beligerant during the interview as you can see here. IT was following the interview that Stern expressed his anger on his December 1, 2005 show according to Marks Friggin.com telling his audience that Stapp reportedly told his girlfriend and i quote “bimbos like her normally don’t go for him” and stern expressed his anger that no one from the show seemed to throw scott off the show and referred to the crew of the show as and i quote ‘maggots’ It was reported that after the appearance stapp saw himself on tv and checked himself into rehab.

Limp Bizkit - Limp Bizkit and Creed were some of the most popular bands by the late 90’s early 2000’s on both rock radio and MTV.

As reported by MTV at the 2000 incarnation of New York Station KROCK’s aptly titled dysfunctional family picnic concert, Creed and Limp Bizkit traded barbs with one another during their performances. Limp Bizkit would take to the stage an hour late,

Limp Bizkit’s label Interscope tried to do some damage control telling MTV there was confusion over Limp's set time. Once limp bizkit took the stage things took a bizarre turn when Durst launched into a rant against Creed frontman Scott Stapp telling the crowd and I quote
"I want to dedicate this next song to the lead singer of Creed.... That guy is an egomaniac," "He's a f***ing punk, and he's backstage right now acting like f***ing Michael Jackson. F** that motherf**er, and f** you too.... [RealVideo] And if you want, there's going to be a booth with pillows and blankets for when Creed comes on."
Stapp addressed the comments during Creed’s set telling the audience “It takes a lot more guts to say something to somebody than from behind their backs." Following the show Durst appeared on MTV’s Total Request Live and either jokingly or not told Carson Daily that he was presented with an anger management manual from Creed’s camp. Creed would end up putting out an official statement that read We are extremely disappointed that Fred Durst has taken his personal feelings toward us public, considering we have never met or spoken to him. We are more disappointed that Fred is manipulating the media and the truth by using Creed as a scapegoat for his own immature and egotistical actions."

Creed’s camp contended that Durst made his comments out of anger over where Limp Bizkit was on the bill. According to MTV limp Bizkit were set to play before STP, Ozzy and Creed with Creed’s statement adding "He then refused to go on stage causing management from KROCK, Creed, Stone Temple Pilots, and Ozzy Osbourne to spend nearly an hour trying to figure out how to get Limp Bizkit to take the stage. Fred finally agreed to play only after he 'finished his dinner,' having accomplished his obvious goal of delaying his set."

Creed would attack Durst again after a voice recording of Durst leaving harassing and threatening voice mail for the band Taproot after they opted not to sign with his label Interscope. I’ve done a whole video on the feud the link is down below. Creed wouldi issue another statement calling Durst’s voice recording and i quote "vulgar comments and violent threats... totally indicative of a mobster mentality" at TapRoot. Scott stapp would also challenge durst to a boxing match for charity, but the challenge would go unaccepted from Durst’s camp.

311 - It was during the promotion for his solo record The Great Divide in 2005 during a tour stopover in Baltimore during thanksgiving weekend that STapp found himself staying at the same hotel as the band 311. It was during his show he was asked to name one band he never thought would make it and he singled out steel panther saying “It amazes me – the amount of shows and attention… They’ve gotten huge in England, but in America, they’re still basically a House of Blues-level band, but it always amazed me how popular Steel Panther got from what they started out as, which was a band called Metal School.
“They’re still a parody, a spoof, on ’80s rock. I think there’s a segment of their fanbase that isn’t even in on the joke, that is younger.
It was a year earlier he was a little more critical saying “I have nothing personal against anybody in the band. They are good people, they are good players and all that. But it’s a spoof. It’s an act. It’s mocking 80’s hard rock….“My time and energy are going to be invested into the bands from that era, that are still trying to make new, credible, real music. …

Rob “Blasko” Nicholson of OZZY OSBOURNE’s would slam Trunk in a tweet put in late 2019 writing

“Was just listening to Eddie Trunk Live on Sirius XM… That dude can go get fucked! Since when is that douche bag the ambassador of Metal?”
Trunk would respond with tweet saying
“Heard that Blasko said some stuff about me on Twitter while listening to my Saturday show. Don’t know the guy, no idea what his problem is!”

Santa Cruz - It was this year that Eddie “I know everybody” trunk posted a video of the band santa cruz performing a show at the whisky a go go and there’s a point in the video where no one is at the microphone and a pre-recorded vocal tape can be heard. Trunk would write on social media in response to the video "This is beyond words … everyone I guess just okay with this?!" "As I've said and have been saying this has become an epidemic that needs to stop. So bad it's to the point this band doesn't event attempt to fake their lip synching. Stunning. Imagine paying to see a band you love 'live' and it's anything but.
"What's the point? Imagine you are a band that puts the work in to be live, and others don't, play to a computer , and fans talk about how great they sound… pathetic. It's the norm in pop, it's gotta stop in rock. Bands, fans and promoters have to care that a live rock show is live or it will only get worse. Madness."
Well Trunk rushed to judgement because the frontman of Santa Cruze Archie would post a response on Instagram where he said the following
"I just feel like I need to clear some expletive out. Obviously, there's been a lot of backlash after our show at the Whisky last Wednesday. And we've been accused of 'miming' on the track, which is not true. We did have backing tracks, but we just had some layers, and that is literally what every big band is doing right now, which just happened to up the timing, so I feel like I need to clear that out right now." "This is my vocal [playing in the video]. This is what I do live. That's my track. That's 100 percent live. And what we had in the P.A. was an octave-lower harmony and an octave-higher harmony to back that shit up. So, please do not talk about something you don't know anything about or do not accuse us of doing something that's not true. So, piss off and shut the f up."
Trunk would write a follow up post claiming he wasn’t singingling the band out and even had Santa Ana his show once and said he liked their music. Archie would end up issuing an apology to trunk for calling him names on social media in a separate post.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has had his share of feuds over the year and today we’re going to take a look at some of them.

#1 Nikki Sixx

Despite both emerging out of Los Angeles, Motley Crue and Metallica were not part of the same circles and by Ulrich and frontman James Hetfield’s own admissions they used their distaste for the glam metal seen to drive their determination. Here’s Ulrich and Hetfield discussing their disdain for Motley Crue and hair bands.

The war of words wouldn’t resurface until 1997 when Ulrich criticized Motley Crue for playing using a backing tape during the billboard awards show. Crue bassist Nikki Sixx responded putting out a statement on an online forum saying

Dear, Sweet, Fat, Balding, Larz (love the make-up, babe!). Taking your ever-moronic soapbox position on a subject that’s none of your fucking business has made you out to be an expletive as usual. Considering that I and Tommy know that your live tapes have been re-recorded and all your instruments were repaired in Pro Tools (and had that balls to lie to your fans and call it a ‘live’ album)…
People in glass houses should not throw rocks! Considering your bullshit to the press, we feel it’s only fair to return the punch! Your such a poseur… Thanks for releasing that ‘load’ of expletive CD of yours… you made more room for us!!”
Unfortunately for the Crue their new album, their first with Vince Neil in nearly 8 years Generation Swine was a commercical and ccriticcal flop. The feud seemed to die down nearly within a few years as Sixx defended Metallica’s album St. Anger against the angry fan reaction and praised the band’s dedication to their live shows during a 2015 interview reminiscing the time both bands shared a festival bill.

Jason Newsted
The bassist would leave Metallica in 2001 and despite his side project Echobrain being hailed as the main culprit for his departure there was an incident that foreshadowed him leaving the group in the early 90’s. This year newsted revealed to Metal Hammer it was a recording with guitarist Devin Towsend that resulted in some words being exchanged between himself and Lars and James revealingI had just established the Chophouse [studio] in '92, and by '94 we had all the gear. Devin came down at the age of about 22 and was an absolute maniac ... every time he would pick up a guitar, you get, ‘Widdle widdle widdle,’ and you’re like, ‘Dude, where in the hell did that come from? Now play it backwards!’”
It would result in a six track demo with him adding “The guys got wind of it, and Lars said, ‘You gotta come up to the house.’ I didn’t really know what it was for, so I take my bass and go up there. ‘What's up, guys?’ ‘Dude, you know you're in Metallica now, don’t you? You can’t just be making music and sending out tapes to whatever expletive with whichever expletive. You do understand that right. Newsted’s response: “Oh!” He explained that he "didn’t realize at all! I didn’t know about the politics. I was just sharing some metal with my friends! I pretty much broke down on that day in front of Lars and James. I was like, ‘I’m sorry, it won’t happen again!’ And that was the first time." Ulrich would tell Zane Lowe in 2021 f you think about it, Jason is the only member of Metallica who has ever left willingly. And that in itself is a statistic. And the resentment from James and I was just so... You can't do that. You can only leave if we want you to leave. And then we weren't equipped at the time to do a deep dive into why he was leaving. So of course, now you can see 20 years later, it makes complete sense."

Bon Jovi - Jon Bon Jovi would be instrumental in helping Skid Row early on in their career. They would share the same manager, helped nab the band a deal with Atlantic Records and even opened for Bon Jovi in the late 80’s. But the relationship between Bach and Jon soured when Jon and Ritchie Sambora as part of taking the band under their wings got a lionshare of Skid Row’s publishing.

According to Bach’s book 18 and Life it was when Skid Row’s merchandise started to outsell Bon JOvi’s that Jon took exception with him recalling in his book that he was summoned into a room by the bon jovi frontman writing "he stared me down and said the words, ‘I’ll f—ing own you.’ ” Bach would also claim that during the tail end of their tours the band’s would play pranks on one another. Ahead of Skid Row’s set in Kentukcy, Bon Jovi’s entourage soaked Bach Bach with ice milk who was furious went up on stage slamming the headliner Skid Row’s crew responded by throwing a carton of eggs at Bon Jovi’s crew.

It was when Skid Row walked off stage that Jon and his roadcrew were waiting for Bach with him writing
“We saw about 60 people coming toward us,” Leading the pack was Jon Bon Jovi himself. Flanking him, side to side, was his dad and his brother Tony. Behind them was the full Bon Jovi road crew.”
Jon Bon Jovi would throw a punch at Bach, that missed. Bon Jovi’s entourage would throw Bach into the dressing room and throw him up against the wall with Bach adding in his book.
“Bon Jovi Senior pointed in my face as I was held against the wall,” Bach writes. “He said, ‘I’ll (blanking) kill you,’ or something like that.”
Both Jon and Ritchie would eventually relax their rights to Skid Row’s publishing under the condition that Bach sign a gag order according to Loudersound. It was years later either in the late 2000’s or 2010’s when Sebastian Bach, who was no longer in Skid Row was touring with Guns N’ Roses and having dinner with frontman Axl Rose at a restaurant in London that he mended fences with Jon.
Chris Jericho

Apart from wrestling, Chris Jericho also built a career in music fronting the band Fozzy. Then another user would insult bach saying jericho has him beat to which bach claimed and i quote “he definitely does considering he mimes to a tape.” The user responded that he does not mime based on his own experience seeing fozzy live to which bach Cool let's see a clip of that then because every single clip I have seen is Milli vanilliresponded
Eventually Jericho wayed in tweeting Hi... I’m Chris “Milli Vanilli” Jericho. I have 5 top 30 singles in the last five years w my band @FOZZYROCK. I’m a huge fan of @sebastianbach ... who had 3 top 30 singles 30 years ago. I always admired him as a singer and a friend! And I still do.
They would trade more barbs and jericho would challenge bach to have a sing off. Skid Row Bandmates
In 1996 Sebastian Bach would be fired after supposedly booking the band to tour with Kiss as part of their reunion tour. While Bach has claimed that the band has gotten several lucrative offers to rejoin and has been open to discussing the possibility, his bandmates don’t want a reunion. Bach was a lightning rod for controversy for the band during their early years.

John Fruscinate would be the longest serving guitarist in the band having three separate stints with the group with his first happening from 1988-1992, 1998-2009 and more recently 2019 until present. By the late 80’s the Chili Peppers already had several guitarists included Jack Sherman and Hillel Slovak. Following the death of Slovak in 1988 Frusciante would join the band. Frusciante’s musical background differed greatly from his bandmates with Flea recallingin the book , Fornication: The Red Hot Chili Peppers Story, Fruiscante was and iquote “a really talented and knowledgeable musician. He [Frusciante] knows all the shit I don’t know. I basically know nothing about music theory and he’s studied it to death, inside and out. He’s a very disciplined musician—all he cares about are his guitar and his cigarettes.”
In 1991 Red Hot Chili Peppers would release their fifth and breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It would establish the band as one of the biggest groups in the world, but the new success brought challenges namely insecurity, infighting and drug addiction. Frontman Anthony Kiedis would write in his 2004 autobiography Scar Tissue about Frusciante’s headspace at the time recalling “John would say, ‘We’re too popular. I don’t need to be at this level of success. I would just be proud to be playing this music in clubs like you guys were doing two years ago.” It was that attitude that also showed up during their live gigs with drummer Chad Smith telling VH1’s behind the music. John was just up there like he didnt’ give an f about anything and you can’t be in a band and not care and it’s gonna show and it did a lot of the shows were terrible.”
.Frusciante would stay with the band until May of 1992 before leaving the group following a performance in tokyo, japan. He would look back revealing in a 1994 interview "It was just impossible for me to stay in the band any longer", he said. "It had come to the point where even though they wanted me in the band, it felt like I was forced out of the band. Not by any members in particular or management in particular, but just the direction it was going.
Upon returning home Frusciante would be hold up in his hollywood hills home finding solace in drugs, ghosts, art and music. While to the public he disappeared for nearly half a decade they would get a glimpse into his mind at the time with the release of his 1995 avante garde album Niandra La Des and Usually Just a T-Shirt. Despite being written three years prior towards his tail end with the Chili Peppers it spells out Frusciante’s fragile state of mind. CMJ New Music Monthly called it "probably the most-up album ever released by someone who had once played in stadiums. It was in 1994 friend johnny depp and gibby haynes from butthole surfers filmed frusciante in his home as part of a short documentary, which would later be released to promote the guitarist’s first solo album..
According to loudersound Frusciante would tell a US Publication about the album “My recordings had gone to from these happy, optimistic things, to celebrations of the surreal, to really scattered, demonic-sounding things like the sound of someone whose mind was about to explode.”
In addition to dealing with a severe drug addiction Frusciante also claimed to hvae upwards of 400 ghosts in his head telling Classic Rock “I wasn’t spiritually protected against the spirits that meant me no good,” “Ghosts that are just there to with me and drive me crazy. I couldn’t discern between them and the ones that were helping me and I was so confused. Everything that I was learning seemed to be pulling me towards death. I saw death in everything around me. And everything that was beautiful represented everything that was sad, lost and gone.”
Despite being estranged from his former bandmates, he did maintain somewhat of a relationship with bassist Flea who would visit his old friend from time to time but as Frusciante’s drug abuse escalated it was too much for Flea.
