Guitar Hero and Rock band were some of the most popular video games for about half a decade starting around the mid 2000’s. Personally. I was a huge Rock Band fanatic. The developers behind the Rock Band franchise, Harmonix were releasing new songs every week for six years straight until 2013. I remember waiting every week to see what the new songs would be. Because of rock band I got introduced to a lot of music I wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise and got interested in picking up an instrument and taking music lessons. You have to remember, I grew up in a household where the most rock n’ roll music my parents played was Kenny G. From 2007 to 2010 both Guitar Hero and rock band seemed to release new games every year and it eventually led to the downfall of music games. They just oversaturated the market without really innovating, you guys remember that ridiculous rock band plastic guitar with all the buttons on it? As guitar hero got more popular instead of innovating they just started adding avatars of famous musicians including billy corgan, shirley manson and today’s topic Kurt Cobain.

In 2009 Rock Band developer Harmonix would release the highly anticipated Beatles version of Rock Band, while Activision released Guitar Hero 5 that year. Guitar Hero 5 didn’t really feature many new innovations or improvements. Just a new tracklist, some new playable avatars one of which was former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain alongside two songs from the band catalog smells like teen spirit and a live recording of lithium. It appears the master recording of lithium didn’t have the appropriate tracks to be used in the game or the masters couldn’t be found., It was around teh release of guitar hero 5 that Activision put out a promotional trailer of the Kurt Cobain’s avatar performing Smells like Teen Spirit. Of course, it garnered a strong reaction, most of which was negative. In order for Kurt Cobain’s likeness to be used his widow Courtney Love had to approve it, while the surviving members of nirvana krist Novaselic and Dave Grohl had to sign off on the band’s music being included in the game.

The whole controversy with Kurt Cobain appearing in the game took a strange turn when it came to light that his avatar could be used to perform non-nirvana songs. A video of the avatar performing bon jovi’s you give love a bad name hit the internet shortly after the game’s release and the reaction was universally one of disgust. Even Jon bon jovi would comment on the matter telling bbc news“I don’t know that I would have wanted it either,” “To hear someone else’s voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don’t know. It sounds a little forced.” It would come out that the bon jovi frontman was asked to be included as an avatar in the game, but declined.

Fans would blame Courtney Love for allowing Cobain’s avatar to be used in teh game and she would take to twitter deflecting blame saying "It's disgusting and vile and is the result of a cabal of a few assholes' greed," "Not in twenty JILLION years would I EVER have allowed this,"

Someone Gives Love a Bad Name: Guitar Hero Starring Kurt Cobain

The surviving members of Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic would put out a statement that read they were and i quote

“dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile (fak-simile)of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game,” adding, “The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate — we have no control whatsoever in that area.” The pair would ask Activision to “re-lock” the Cobain character and state, “It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.”

Activision the game’s publisher would issue a statement that read ‘Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.’I did come across another article where activision said it was too expensive to lock the character.

Irene Cara is best known as a singer of movie themes, though she worked as an actress since childhood. Raised in New York City, she appeared on Broadway in 1967 in the musical Maggie Flynn at age eight and can be heard on the cast album for the show The Me Nobody Knows. From the age of 16, she was turning up on television and in films, including a part in the TV mini-series Roots 2 in 1979. In 1980, she was catapulted into stardom and a singing career by her appearance in the film Fame, for which she sang the title song, an Oscar-winning Top Ten hit. Also from the film was her Top 40 hit "Out Here on My Own." In 1983, she topped the charts with "Flashdance...What a Feelin'" from the movie Flashdance, a song she co-wrote that won another Oscar, and Cara won a couple of Grammys for her contributions to the soundtrack. Jennifer Beals stars as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel-mill welder by day, and bar dancer by night. Harboring dreams of a career in ballet, she is given financial support in this endeavor by her boss Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri) and moral support by demanding but big-hearted instructor Hanna Long (Lilia Skala). The film's signature scene is, of course, Alex's water-drenched dance audition, largely performed in long shot by her dance double Marine Jahan. Essentially an old-fashioned backstage yarn, Flashdance was given a contemporary spin by its pulsating, musical score featuring the Oscar-winning Best Song, Flashdance...What a Feeling, (music by Giorgio Moroder, lyrics by Keith Forsey and Irene Cara).

’ve had a lot of people requesting this band over the past year or two and it’s finally time to tackle this subject. Before we start make sure you guys go fill out our request form in the description box below of what stories and topics you’d like to see us cover in the future on our channel. Stabbing Westward would emerge on people’s radars during the mid 90’s and be frequently compared to industrial pioneers nine Inch nails. I mean, they shared a similar sound even shared drummers, which may have been instrumental in getting the band signed and today we’re going to explore whatever happened to the band.

While Stabbing Westward wouldn’t rise to prominence in the middle part of the 90’s they formed nearly a decade prior in the 80’s. The band would be started by two musicians bassist and vocalist Christopher Hall and Walter Flakus (keyboardist, programmer, backup singer) in the city of Macomb, Illinois. Most sources said the band’s early days dated back to 1985, but one fan site that’s since archived claims the band’s origins dated back to 1981. According to the fan site the pair met at a summer music camp. Four years later they would both attend Western Illinois University pursuing degrees in music, while working at the local college radio station.. At this time forming a rock band wasn’t on their minds, at least not for Hall who would tell Cryptic Rock From the time I was five, I played the trumpet and I went to college studying Classical music. I was convinced I was going to be a trumpet player in the Chicago Symphony and be a university teacher; that was my goal.The Rock band thing was sort of a side passion that kind of took over. Hall would tell songfacts where the band’s musical inspiration came from saying As kids, Walter and I were crazy about Ministry and Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk and bands like that. Anything Al Jourgensen did we just thought was the greatest thing on earth. That was always just what we wanted to do.

The pair would play in a variety of bands before they decided they wanted to form their own project.The pair soon started recording music similar to the Cure and they bought a four track recorder, a drum machine and learned how to sequence a midi keyboard. Christopher Hall would tell Songfacts We were both in other bands – together and apart – that were mostly cover bands. One band was like a new wave cover band. I was in another band that did a lot of Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen type stuff. But Walter and I always secretly wrote industrial music in our bedroom. We would put together every keyboard and drum machine we had and bounce tracks on a four-track. That was our passion.

According to future drummer Andy Kubiszewski (Coup-bichess-kee) who told be in the loop chicago the band’s name came from and i quote “essentially when Chris and Walter were putting the band together, they had a gig and there was a deadline for a name for the band, so they pulled out a bunch of album covers and they pulled out a record cover and it had an excerpt from, I believe it was an Eisenhower speech, where he was talking about communism coming to the west and he used the phrase “stabbing westward,” and they went oh well, “Stabbing Westward”, that will work.”

In reality the phrase stabbing westward was not from eisenhower, but an unknown announcer from a 1947 newsreel. The newsreel would be included in the 1982 documentary the atomic cafe.

The pairs post secondary institution of Western Illinois University served as an inspiration for the pair with Hall stating to R&R Reported “Since we went to Western Illinois University, Stabbing Westward had a certain ‘kill everybody in the school’ vibe to it! The school’s way out in farm country and the country is really close minded. I was walking around like Robert Smith with real big hair, big baggy black clothes, black fingernail polish and eye makeup. They just didn’t get it. We hated the town.”

I’ve covered a lot of Alice in CHains videos on my channel including their glam days, making of facelift, jar of flies, sap and rooster. Links to those videos are down below. But today let’s take a look at a frontman Layne Staley’s final days with the band in the studio.
Alice in CHains would establish themselves as the first band out of seattles so called grunge movement to have a gold record with facelift. They would be release several big records including 1992’s Dirt, 1994’s EP Jar of Flies and 1995’s Self titled record that would prove to be their final studio album of original recordings. Addiction and in-fighting led to the band stop touring in any major capacity by 1993. Frontman Layne Staley’s addiction to heroin would be the group’s achiles heal and it wasn’t something the singer hid. A lot of their sop****re release 1992’s Dirt captured Layne’s struggle. The band’s last major appearance on the

road would be 1996, a year that saw the band briefly open for kiss that summer and make a few live tv appearances in addition to cutting an unplugged album. It was obvious from layen;’s changing physical appearance by 1996 he was still struggling with addiction. Following that summer alice in chains camp would lie dormant. Layne was hit with devastating news in October of that year when he learned his ex-fiance Demri Parrot had died. It was said by those close to him that he never fully recovered from her death.
By november of 1997 Layne would record guest vocals on the song the things you do for his friend jesse holt. Layne had previously recorded vocals on the track in 1988. In the book alice in chains the untold story, jason buttino who has the recordings would be quoted in the book as saying layne’s voice by this point in time was so quiet and soft his vocal track had to be boosted. Buttino also attributed the change in his voice not just due to his deteriorating health but the fact that the song was recorded a year after Demri’s death, something that obviously was still weighing heavily on him. It was during this time There’d be the odd news story about some running into Layne a lot of which is captured in the books everybody loves our town and grunge is dead. Even MTV reported in August 1997 there were rumors circulating online and on radio stations that Layne had lost several fingers to gangrene. The rumors likely stemmed from a 1996 profile that rolling stone did on the band that highlighted his personal problems. A rep for the band would issue a statement to mtv that read "I visited Layne the other day, and he's fine... and he's got all his fingers."
In October of 1997 the band’s manager Susan would appear at the north by northwest music and media conference and the seattle times would report at the time and i quote “she also hinted with a sigh that a lice is about to self destruct.” It was during this time Silver closed her management business.
A few months after the report came out in late 1997 reports would surface that guitarist Jerry Cantrell was now turning his attention to putting out a solo record. It’s important to note that boggy depot consisted of ¾ of alice in chains minus layne staley. I’ve covered a lot of artists whose videos MTV banned including Soundgarden, Neil Young, and Danzig. In pretty much all of these instances their videos either criticized the network, broke their policies or had imagery that was too provocative, but it’s rare that video has no violence, no nudity or criticizes the network and still gets banned. Well that’s what happened to TOOL. Let’s discuss in today’s video.
Formed in Los Angeles in the early 90’s by frontman Maynard James Kennan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and original bassist Paul D’Amour Tool would shock everyone with the one two punch of their debut EP 1992’s Opiate and 1993’s Undertow. For the members of the Tool it was important first and foremost to have creative control with guitarist Adam Jones telling Revolver Magazine “When we got signed [by Zoo Records in 1992], the most important thing for us was to have creative control,”
And that creative control extended not just to their music, but to their music videos. In fact before starting the band Tool both Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Adam Jones worked on film productions doing visual effects for several big hollywood films including Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. In the same interview with Revolver Jones would add “We went, ‘OK, if we take less money can we have control of the music?’ And the label went, ‘Yeah, no problem!’ And we said, ‘If we take even less money can we have final say over the videos.’ And they went, ‘Sure.’”
Of course in theory all this is great, but Tool would soon butt heads with their record label. The second single from Undertow Sober would feature a stop motion video as did the video for their third single Prison Sex. For record labels you don’t just sell the music, but you sell the image of the band and Jones would tell Metal Hammer. “There was a lot of banging heads with the record company, because they still wanted to do things in the traditional way,. “They’d go, ‘Well, if you’re not gonna be in your video, we’re not gonna pay for it.’ And we’d say, ‘What do you mean? We’re supposed to have creative control.’ It was typical, slimy shit, but in the end they gave in.”
Even during the filming of the video the band ran into some serious issues. As filming began with Sober director Fred Stuhr in January of 1994 in Los Angeles the city would be rocked by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that killed dozens and injured nearly 10,000 people. Jones would tell Loudersound
“We were still there at three in the morning when the ’94 earthquake hit Los Angeles,” “We were on the second floor of this old brick building that used to be owned by [American filmmaker] Cecil B. DeMille, and it wasn’t too sturdy. The rooms started shaking, and before I even know what was going on, Fred ran over to stand in the doorway, because that’s what you’re supposed to do in an earthquake. But the other five of us who were there just ran out and ploughed him over and left him lying on the ground. It was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, and the best thing. When I looked out I could see downtown Hollywood, and all the transformers were blowing. They were popping, so there were these lightning strikes everywhere and it looked like the city was being bombed. It was just so beautiful.”

The subject matter of Prison sex dealt with childhood trauma , something the video depicted metaphorically. The message of the song is that those who suffere trauma early on in their life are capable of inflicting the same trauma as they get older. It’s been speculated the song was written about Maynard James Keenan’s step father, whom the frontman has repeatedly expressed his distaste for.
The message of the song wasn’t lost on both muchmusic in canada and mtv banned the video after a few plays. Despite this move the video still snagged a nomination for best visual effects. The reason for banning the video was that MTV complained the video was too unsettling. Despite the controversy over the lyrical content the song got airplay in the states peaking at number 32 on the mainstream rock char

Back in December of 2003 The Offspring would be releasing their seventh studio album named Splinter. But going back to April of the same year the band was getting ready to announce the name of the album and as an april fools joke got on the nerves of Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose. So much so, it resulted in the threat of legal action. Let’s explore what happened in today’s video.

Guns N’ Roses classic early 90’s lineup of frontman Axl Rose, Guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, Gilby Clarke and keyboardist Dizzy Reed would slowly fall apart by the mid 90’s. While there was no big explosion or nasty breakup, members with the exception Rose and Reed left the group or were fired by 1997. This resulted in frontman Axl Rose owning the Guns n’ Roses name and being at the helm of their new album. Years had passed since the band’s last studio album and by 1998 it appeared that Rose had assembled a new lineup of Guns N’ Roses. The following year the album had a name Chinese Democracy after Rose was interviewed by Kurt Loder over the phone and said the following “There's a lot of Chinese democracy movements, and it's something that there's a lot of talk about, and it's something that will be nice to see,” “It could also just be like an ironic statement. I don't know, I just like the sound of it.” Years would go by and while Rose and his new lineup of Guns N’ Roses would play some live shows and tour there new album was a no show. By 2003 The Offspring decided to have some fun with the whole situation when it came time to name their seventh studio record.

Frontman Dexter Holland would tell Spinner what happened saying “When the record’s coming together, you try to seriously think of a title for ten minutes and then everyone in the band jokes around for the next two hours with ideas like Offspring Bloody Offspring," "One day, somebody suggested Chinese Democracy and we couldn’t stop laughing about it." Frontman Dexter Holland would issue a statement to commemorate the Offspring’s seventh album being announced saying

You snooze, you lose,”“Axl ripped-off my braids, so I ripped-off his album title.” Some news stories claimed the offspring’s seventh album would be called chinese democracy while other stories claimed it was chinese democracy and in parentheses you snooze you lose)

So was the whole stunt legal? Well Rolling Stone Magazine would cite Greg Victoroff who is a co0yright lawyer who stated at the time “Trademark law does not come into existence
unless the title is used in interstate commerce,” adding that copyright law
does not extend to titles.

“[Right now], they’re just two ordinary words,”.
“Under that analysis, it would seem that Guns n’ Roses have no
right to that title and the Offspring are free to use it in any
purpose they wish.”

The lawyer would go on to tell Rolling Stone that while Guns N’ Roses had referred to the name CHinese Democracy in press releases and part of their failed 2002 tour it never had an official release date. Even then Victoroff would tell Rolling Stone that if both albums shared the same name as long as the name of each band was clearly labeled on the album there wouldn’t be an issue for the Offspring. In fact it’s pretty common to see albums share same names in the past and songs.

It was reported at the time that Guns N’ Roses lawyers had sent the OffSpring a cease and desist letter, something which was disputed by the Offspring’s camp.

Coincidentally, Josh Freese, would play with the Offspring in 2003 and had originally worked and wrote some of the material on Chinese Democracy from 1998-2000.

Eclectic Musician Frank Zappa would first appear on NBC’s variety sketch show Saturday Night Live in 1976 as the musical guest. Two years later he’d appear as the host and musical guest and it would result in him getting banned. Let’s take a look at what happened.
On October 21, 1978 Frank Zappa was tapped to host saturday night live and appear as the musical guest. It was a rare occurrence back in the day for the show to have the same host and musical guest. It feels more common nowadays. Unfortunately for the show and Zappa it didn’t go well.. Looking uncomfortable during the beginning of the show Zappa would start things off by reminding the audience that he was reading off of cue cards.
Each episode of SNL involves a week of brainstorming ideas for sketches, writing the sketches and then rehearsing. It was during the run up to his hosting date that Zappa didn’t appear to get along with the cast of the show. So much so, that some of the cast members refused to even appear onstage with the musician during the final segment of the show known as the ‘goodnight segment’. Perhaps part of the reason Zappa didn’t gel with the cast was because it was the 70’s and drug use was pretty rampant amongst the SNL staff, something Zappa disapproved of.
After a poorly received dress rehearsal Zappa adopted an attitude of indifference, and it was obvious to those watching at home.
A year after his appearance Zappa would be interviewed by Stereo Review and look back at his appearance hosting SNL Saying “It’s a very difficult thing to do; they never make it easy on anyone who hosts the show. All the direction and attention goes to the sketches. They’re not called skits–they become ‘incensed’ if you call them skits–and it’s all designed to accommodate the people who are regulars on the show, so anybody who goes on there to hosts is at a severe disadvantage. Because they never tell you what camera is on, and you’re not supposed to memorize your script because they’re rewriting right up to show time. And so you’re looking at the cue cards, and unless you’re used to acting live on TV, you haven’t got a prayer; you’ll be looking at the wrong camera. It was really hard.” Adding They [SNL] had written dialogue for me to say that I wouldn’t normally say; they wouldn’t let me write any of my own stuff.”
In 1990 comedian and cast member Dana Carvey would end up immitating Frank Zappa on the show during an episode that comedian andrew dice clay hosted.

Nirvana would release their final and third studio album in-utero in September of 1993. Unbeknownst to their fans, the band would be done 8 months later. Today I want to talk about the band’s final concert.

In the months after Nirvana released in-utero they’d play MTV unplugged in november of 1993 and the same month perform on mtv’s live and loud. In January of 1994 the band would reassemble in the studio, but those sessions proved unfruitful.

In February of 1994 the band traveled to europe for what would be their final tour together. It was originally planned to be a 3 month trek that would see them Playacross the entire continent and last until April 8th.. Cobain who had been struggling with heroin addiction for the past three years was finding it more difficult to find his drug on Europe resulting in him going through painful withdrawals. Only adding to the problems for him was that his wife Courtney Love and Daughter were back home and Kurt was feeling lonely.

On top of that Kurt the rigors of touring were taking a toll on Kurt’s voice and physical health.

Nirvana would play their final gig on March 1, 1994 at an airplane hangar called Terminal 1 in Munich, germany to a crowd of 3,000 people.This wasn’t the final scheduled date of the tour, but rather a midway point as according to Kerrang the band had also scheduled Manchester (March 27), Glasgow (28), Aston Villa Leisure Centre (30 and 31), Cardiff International Arena (April 1) and four nights at Brixton Academy in London (April 3, 4, 5 and 6) before finishing up the tour in Dublin Ireland on April 8th.

The band initially was only scheduled to play two shows at the brixton academy but two more shows would be tacked on after the first two shows sold out within hours, which was helped by the fact that in-utero topped the uk charts. In the run up to the band’s performance at Terminal 1, Kerrang magazine wrote a review of the band’s show in Paris as and i quote a “safe and conventional performance” and claimed the band looked and i quote “bored and tame”, A pretty accurate assessment. Esquire would publish excerpts from the book i found my friends the oral history of nirvana: The book would detail the shifting mood in the band during their final tour. Beginning in portugal in february of 1994 the mood shifted from excitement to and i quote By March 1, the mood of the tour was at a perilous low as Nirvana strolled through virtually the same ninety-minute sets they'd played every night for sixty shows over five months and Cobain complained of illness—"bored and old" indeed

Their final show in Munich would come nearly six weeks before Cobain would die at his home in Seattle. Back in 1996 INXS Frontman Michael Hutchence would present Oasis with an award for their huge hit Wanderwall at the Brit Awards. But the happy occasion resulted in Oasis guitarist Noel gallagher hurling an insult at Hutchence and INXS and would result in a diss track. That’s what were going to discuss in today’s video.

At the 1995 MTV European music awards it was reported that INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher nearly got into a fight backstage when Hutchence threw a fire extinguisher at Liam following some disparaging remarks he made about his then lover, Paula Yates according to the book INXS: Story to Story the official autobiography. There wasn’t much follow up reporting, but a year later 1996 at the Brit Awards it seemed like it was water under the bridge at least initially. Hutchence who was an Oasis fan would present an award that night to Oasis. Oasis at the time was reeling from the success of their sop****re record what’s the story morning glory. Featuring the hit song Wonderwall the song was nominated for the best video category wand be against take that, pulp, radiohead and blur. Oasis would win the award but as Oasis left the stage noel gallagher hurled an insult at hutchence saying

It was during the time of the Brit awardds that INXS who had started writing what would be their final album 1997’s Elegantly Wasted. The band had come off an extended hiatus after their last album 1993’ Full Moon Dirty Hearts was a commercial disappointment due to lukewarm responses from critics and changing musical tastes.

Hutchence would tell the album network magazine in 1997 “We really wanted to get off the old carousel for a while,” “As a band, we have recorded an album every 12 to 18 months over the last five or six years. This helped to create a situation resulting in a lot of personal and business friction within the band, as well as the record label. … So, it just seemed like the logical time to take a break.”

It was sometime after the brit awards that hutchence was in dublin, ireland and was at a bar with bono of u2 when liam gallagher supposedly walked in and got into a verbal altercation with hutchence. Bono kept the peace, butHutchence was so infuriated with the event that he headed back into the studio and added a background vocal to the title track elegantly wasted that said “i’m better than oasis.’ HEres an interview with hutchence asking about the song.

Hutchence would take his own life in november of 1997 and to those close to him Noel’s remark was said to have humiliated him.

Noel Gallagher seemed to would discuss the incident in 2000, three years after hutchence death telling uncut magazine…. The second night of The Brits [1996]. We didn't know Michael Hutchence was going to present us with an award. It was the first award of the night and there'd been words said before the ceremony in the papers. So when he come out to present the award, we went, 'Right, these cs [Brits organisers] have stitched us up here, because they know what's going on.' So we decided that, every time we hit that stage, we were just going to give it to everyone, and we f***ing duly did…It wasn't scripted or anything like that. We probably wouldn't have done anything if Michael Hutchence hadn't come out and said his little bit: 'I heard Liam wants to fight me.' We were like, 'Don't f***ing try and pick a fight with us, man, because we're the best at giving verbal abuse,' and off we went.

WHile the band’d last album with hutchence wasn’t as commercially successful as their earlier works the title track would peak at number 2 on the alternative charts in America.
