Led by imposing frontman Peter Steele, Type O Negative would bring goth metal to the masses during the 90’s.
The band mixed themes of romance, drugs, depression, and death resulting in the name the "the Drab Four” which was a nod to the Beatles “the fab four” moniker. Type O Negative's keyboardist Josh Silver would reveal in the book The Oral History of Metal how frontman Peter Steele’s frustrations as a teenager and young adult influenced his song writing revealing: “Peter was big and considered himself kind of goofy. He didn’t have girlfriends growing up. A lot of Type O’s music was written from the perspective of someone who who couldn’t get laidd. We had songs like I know your fing someone else. He was able to be very honest about how hurt he was during a lot of these periods. I think it was part of what made us appealing. We told the truth" he’d say.
Several years prior to the formation of Type O negative in 1989, Peter Steele was fronting and playing bass in another band named Carnivore. The band would take to the stage during live shows dressed as warriors in worn clothing and attached spikes to hockey gear. The band’s music explored some pretty dark themes with song titles including "Jesus Hiler", "Race War", and "Thermonuclear Warrior,"
Steele was known for having a dark sense of humor as Type O Negative drummer
Sal Abruscato would tell Metal Hammer Magazine:“Peter enjoyed messing with people,”.
“People though he was serious when he was joking and joking when he was serious.”
Carnivore would only last for two albums before the band split and Steele went on to form a new band with longtime friend Josh Silver. They would originally called themselves Subzero before finally landing on the name Type O Negative. Type O Negative’s first record 1991’s slow deep and hard would feature songs more heavily influenced by doom, and thrash metal. The following year the band released 1992’s The Origin Of Feces which was a faux live record that featured a hostile live audience.

Bloody kisses featured the band’s best known song Black No. 1 which was a mainstay of MTV’s
headbangers ball. The song sarcastic lyrics were loosely inspired by a relationship Steele
had with a goth. The singer would tell Revolver how he wrote the song while working as a truck
driver revealing "I was waiting in line for three hours to dump 40 cubic yards of human
waste at the Hamilton Avenue Marine Transfer Station, and I wrote the song in my head.
I'm not kidding you."
The second single released from the record Christian Woman which had a successful run
on US rock radio and along with the album’s first single pushed the album to go platinum
in the US.

It wasn’t until 1993’s bloody kisses that the band’s goth metal sound took center stage According to Abruscato “Peter loved the goth girls,”“We used to go to the bars where they all hung outto pick them up. But he was really into tha tsound – The Sisters Of Mercy,, My Bloody Valentine. That whole scene was attractive to him, so he made it his own.”
The goth element wasn’t the only new thing brought to Type O Negative’s sound on bloody
kisses as according Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey “Peter decided that melody was really where it’s at,”“which was a hard thing to do. He went from screaming his head off and
Former drummer Sal Abruscato would reveal to Widerhorn his summary of Steel’s personality saying“Peter was a very sweet, very funny guy, but he was also very fragile,” “And that vulnerability allowed some demons to come in.”
October Rust would go gold it failed to match the success of Bloody Kisses., but would still go gold.
Life Is Killing Me would be the band’s sixth studio album and their final record released on labell Roadrunner Records. The album once again dealt with mental illness, the death of Steele’s parents.
Steele would be forthcoming about his problems with the law and relationships he’d had. He would reveal in the Oral History of Metal:

While the demise of Bon Scott may seem like a straight forward death by misadventure story on the surface, there’s been many conflicting accounts over what actually happened. In my opinion Bon Scott’s death is one of rock n’ rolls greatest mysteries and almost 40 years after his death new details continue to emerge on what happened on his last night alive. Stay tuned to find out the full story.

Few bands have managed to do what AC/DC has accomplished. The band has managed to stay relevant for over 40 years and they survived tragedy after tragedy with band members passing away, the media blaming them for both fan deaths and for allegedly inspiring a serial killer. One of the first tragedies the band dealt with was the death of frontman Bon Scott.

The story of what happened to Bon is built from the recollections of several people one of which was named Alistair Kinnear, Joe Fury and Silver Smith. These three people all have something in common with the drug heroin, something Scott was alleged to have used by some. The rest of the story of what happened to the singer is based off the testimonials of the members of AC/DC, the band UFO and Bon's Japanese girlfriend named Anna Baba who briefly dated the singer in the run up to his death.. Although it’s important to note that Anna wasn’t allegedly with Bon the night of he passed away..

Born in Scotland in 1946, Scott’s family would move to Australia when he was just 5 years old. He learned music at a very young age, first taking up the drums. He dropped out of high school at age 15 to start his first band, The Spektors who would merge with another local band and become the Valentines. Bon Scott took a bigger role in singing becoming the co-vocalist and the group scored a few hit songs on the local and national radio, but by the end of the decade the band disbanded due to artistic differences. And In 1970 the then drummer and occasional singer moved to Adelaide where he fronted a progressive rock band known as Fraternity. By 1973 the band changed their name to Fang and would be touring the UK where they were a supporting act to the band Geordie whose frontman Brian Johnson would coincidentally enough replace Scott in AC/DC following his death. Prior to the UK tour Scott married his first wife a local named Irene Thorton whom he met the previous year

In 1974 Bon would suffer a devastating motorcycle injury that left him in a coma and put his career as a drummer in jeopardy. After he would be released from the hospital, he would take up odd jobs including being a chauffeur for a local band named AC/DC who just happened to be on the search for a new singer. He would become the band’s frontman in 1974 and the following year the group released their their first album with Scott titled High Voltage and the band made their TV debut with the singer on local musical program show called Countdown where they performed the song Baby Please Dont Go which featured Scott dressed as a school girl which complimented guitarist Angus Young signature school boy outfit. The band would release several subsequent albums, but it would be their 6th album 1979’s Highway to hell which would first record to break the US Top 100 charts and make AC/DC one of the most popular rock acts in the world.

The tour to support the record would be the band’s final with Scott who would die just three weeks following the group’s last show in Southampton in the UK.
Scott was in London in February of 1980 working on the group’s upcoming Back in Black album. And he was living in a flat with his new Japanese girlfriend, Anna Baba, but also in the picture was his former girlfriend an Australian named Margaret Silver Smith who was involved in the drug scene which we’ll talk about later in this story. The daytime was for recording, while the nights were for partying. On February 15th Scott was in the studio with the Young Brothers who were working on two songs named "Have a Drink On Me" and "Let Me Put My Love Into You" with Scott playing on drums instead of singing or writing lyrics.

The Black Crowes Singer Chris Robinson is never afraid to let his opinion be known even if it lands him in hot water. That’s exactly what happened when in the early 90’s his band The Black Crowes opened for The Texas Rockers ZZ Top and got fired from the tour. Stay tuned for the full story.

At the beginning of the 90’s The Black Crowes were one of the hottest new bands having released their debut album 1990s Shake Your Moneymaker which spawned four big singles including their cover of Otis Redding’s 1968 song Hard to Handle,, She Talks to Angels, Jealous Again, Twice as Hard and Seeing Things. The band’s debut album was certified 5x platinum just in the United States by the middle of the decade and peaked at number 4 on the charts. Also bolstering the band’s image was their anti-establishment attitude, which also created headaches for them along the way.

As part of the tour to support their debut album they landed a prime spot opening or the Texas trio ZZ Top in early 1991.. ZZ Top were out supporting their 1990 album Recycler which went platinum but failed to garner as much commercial success and fan fare as their previous releases Eliminator and Afterburner.

The tour to support ZZ Top started in January and was supposed to go until May but unraveled halfway through. The Black Crowes claimed their dismissal had nothing to do with music, but rather business disagreements. The tour was scheduled to make a three date homecoming stand in Atlanta at the Omni Coliseum in Mid March, but after only two nights the black crowes were let go.

Brothers Chris and Rich Robinson would appear on MTV’s Rockline to tell their side of the story and they pointed the finger at ZZ Top’s Manager Bill Ham. They claimed Ham was upset with remarks Chris had made on state criticizing ZZ Top for using corporate sponsors on their tour, more specifically Miller Brewing. According to the LA TImes who ran a piece about the dismissal in 1991 claimed

That the band ran into trouble when ZZ Top’s management company Lone Wolf Productions who warned Chris to stop making statements between songs about corporate sponsorships. For example one of the lines Robinson told a crowd at a show was “This is live rock ‘n’ roll being brought to you commercial free.” The brothers would appear on MTV’s rockline immediately following their dismissal and discuss what happened as you can see here.

Following the band’s dismissal ZZ Top’s management company issued a statement to the press that read

This decision was arrived at entirely within this organization and not as has been suggested as a result of corporate pressure,” the company said in a statement released Tuesday. “Miller Brewing has been a partner in this tour since its inception and has been very accommodating to ZZ Top and has asked absolutely nothing of the opening acts which have appeared. It is out of a sense of common decency and courtesy coupled with a moral and ethical obligation that this action has been taken.”

The Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson disputed these claims and even went on to say the band basically dared Miller to throw them off the tour telling Q Magazine in 1991

Miller said, 'You don't say that, and if you do, we'll throw you off the tour.' We said. 'Hey, we don't have a contract with you. We thought we were going on tour with ZZ. If you wanna throw us off, throw us off.' And they did," "Miller faxed ZZ, saying, 'Get rid of them, we don't want this press.' ZZ had no idea themselves; it was their manager Bill Ham. He sees Miller giving them millions of dollars, and then sees those millions being pulled away if he doesn't do something. So we were thrown off.”

Of course since the firing happened in The Crowes home state of Georgia, the story quickly picked up steam and made up a lot of the band’s press coverage around this time.
Both bands appeared to leave the tour unscathed as ZZ Top continued to tour with a variety of openers replacing the Black C

Takin' It To The Streets - The Doobie Brothers (1976) Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

"Takin' It To The Streets" was the title track from the sixth studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers, released in 1976. It was the first album to feature Michael McDonald on lead vocals, and the single peaked at #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. By late 1975, touring was beginning to take its toll on the band, especially leader Tom Johnston. Things became worse during touring in support of "Stampede" when he was diagnosed with stomach ulcers. His condition worsened and several shows had to be canceled. With Johnston forced to reduce his involvement with the band, the other members considered just calling it quits, but while in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, member Jeff Baxter suggested calling up friend and fellow Steely Dan graduate Michael McDonald, who at the time was between gigs and living in a garage apartment. McDonald was reluctant at first, feeling he was not what they wanted, but he agreed to join them and met them at the Le Pavillion Hotel in New Orleans where they moved on to a warehouse to rehearse for the next two days. Expecting to be finished once touring was completed, McDonald was surprised when the band invited him to the studio to work on their next album. The Doobie Brothers have sold over 30 million albums in the United States from the 1970s to the present, and were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. It was a frequent site at the White Stripes concerts to see Jack White introduce his bandmate as “big sister Meg.” The White Stripes formed in the late 90’s at a time when Rock N’ Roll was kind of in a weird spot. The dust had settled on the alternative rock movement of the early 90’s and while there still were bands on the charts from that era, it was a far cry from their heyday. Most of the popular rock songs of the time were considered pop-rock and what some would call post-grunge. The White Stripes seemed like a breath of fresh air while also being a throwback. A band that paid homage to the blues. The White Stripes would go on to heavily influence the revival of garage rock in the late 90’s and the early 2000’s with band’s like the the Black Keys and the Strokes following in their footsteps.
But from day one Jack and Meg concocted a story that they were brother and sister, despite the fact that they were married. So how did they get exposed out and why did they come up with this idea in the first place? Stay tuned to find out.
Hailing from Detroit, Jack White was originally born John Gillis. As a teenager he attended a mostly ethnically mixed school. Hip hop was popular with the kids at the school he attended, but Jack didn’t count himself a fan, instead focusing on mastering the guitar as his influences included Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart, Pink Floyd, The Doors and countless old time blues musicians, Obviously he became the odd man out at school. And music wasn’t Jack’s first calling in life as he would reveal to Rolling Stone, that he initially had several ideas of what he wanted to do after graduating including entering the priesthood and possibly joining the marines
There was one moment though in White’s life that he can vividly remember that turned him onto the Blues. It would be a 1993 Radiohead Gig when he heard Son House’s John The Revelator played as the intro music, and it was something caught his attention. Eventually getting his hands on a copy of Son house’s House of the Father Of Folk Blues LP from 1965, the stripped down, yet effective sound caught Jack’s ear. He would reveal in the film ‘It Might Get loud’ with Jimmy Page and U2’s the Edge
“I didn’t know you could do that, just singing and clapping,” “It meant everything. I heard everything disappearing.”
“It was as if someone, with a single blow of the axe, had opened up the world to me… After that, my life received meaning.” Soon afterwards, Jack started to pick up other blues albums. And Apart from playing guitar, he also played drums and was into poetry. .He would also attend open mic nights at a local restaurant called Memphis Smoke, where he met future bandmate and wife Meg White who worked there as a waitress. The two hit it off immediately and began dating getting eventually married on September 21, 1996. John Gillis became Jack White taking Meg's last name.
Then on Bastille Day in 1997, everything changed. Meg White sat down and played drums for the first time on Jack’s kit. White would tell Rolling Stone in 2008
"When she started to play drums with me, just on a lark, it felt liberating and refreshing. There was something in it that opened me up" he'd remember.
Soon afterwards the pair formed a band and threw around a few names to call themselves including Bazooka and Soda Power. Thankfully, the band choose the White Stripes due ot the fact there last name was White and that Meg loved peppermints.After they formed the band, the two concocted a story of them being brother and sister, but why go through all this trouble of doing that. Well White would tell Rolling Stone in 2005 that the lie forced people to take them more seriously
"If we had presented ourselves in another fashion… how would we have been perceived, right off the bat? When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think, 'Oh, I see…
"When they're brother and sister, you go: 'Oh, that's interesting.' You care more about the music, not the relationship." he'd say.

“Everything that’s happened to us has been like something out of a fairy tale.” Those were the words of Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby who was talking about the success of the band’s first album, 1984’s Out of the Cellar. Ratt would go on to dominate the rock scene in the 80’s with hit album after hit album. But soon enough Crosby’s fairy tale would turn into a nightmare. Stay tuned for the full story.
Becoming a rockstar was the dream of guitarist Robbin Crosby who grew up in San Diego. In the 1970s he played in a local band named Mac Media where he came up with early versions of the songs "Scene of the Crime" and "I'm Insane" both of which would show up on Ratt’s debut album. Eventually Crosby left the group and joined a different San Diego outfit named Phenomenon. It was around this time Crosby would meet a Singer named Stephen Pearcy who was fronting a group named Mickey Ratt. By 1981 both musicians hadn’t yet played in the same band, but they moved to LA with their respective groups hoping to land a major record deal. Also joining Crosby on his journey from San Diego to LA would be his girlfriend andfuture model and actress Tawny Kitaene We’ll talk more about her in a bit.
Pearcy would recall to the San Diego Tribune during a 1984 interview why he moved to LA saying
“The only bands that were getting signed (to record contracts) in San Diego at that time were new wave-type bands, so I decided to take my band, Mickey Ratt, to Los Angeles,”

Los Angeles proved to be a much more fertile ground for the type of rock n’ roll that the two musicians were playing given the success of LA based bands like Van Halen and Quiet Riot.
And it wasn’t too long after the pair moved out to LA that their own bands fell apart and Pearcy and Crosby soon started playing together under the moniker Ratt.
Pearcy would discuss the important of Crosby joining the band and how he was instrumental to the band’s sound during a 2011 interview with Noisecreep saying
I brought Robbin into the lineup. Together we laid down the foundation for what everyone knows as the Ratt sound. In those early years, Robbin was pretty much the main guy.
And the band would undergo several lineup changes before finally settling on the musicians that got them a record deal with lead guitarist Warren DeMartini drummer Bobby Blotzer and bassist Juan Croucier . Percy would recall the twin guitar attack of De Martini and Crosby telling Noisecreep “Robbin had his own style, but he was definitely influenced by Billy Gibbons and Jimi Hendrix. He played with great feel. Warren was more of a noodler, a guitar hero type of player. They complimented each other so well,” Warren was progressing so phenomenally that it was hard to ignore he'd say.

Shortly after their formation, Ratt would play at the Whisky A Go Go and soon earned the status of house band. It was during this time that they caught the attention of Marshall Berle, who was the nephew of comedian and actor Milton Berle who would appear in the band’s future music videos. Berle would sign the band to his time communications record label releasing a self titled EP that sold so incredibly well that it caught the attention of several labels. They band would eventually sign a major recording contract with Atlantic Records and release their major label debut Out of the Cellar. Appearing on the front cover of the band’s first EP and LP would be Crosby’s girlfriend Tawny Kitaen. Out of the Cellar would be the biggest album of their career going triple platinum and the album was spurred by the single Round and Round, which got heavy airplay on MTV and was a top 10 hit on the music charts in America.
Guitarist Robbin Crosby would tell the San Diego Tribune in 1984 how Ratt separated themselves from other rock bands at the time saying “We definitely try to be melodic so that we don’t get caught up in the heavy metal shuffle, but I think our music is aimed more at a female audience than a lot

Made up of singer and guitarist Ed Kowalczy, guitarist Chad taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimmer and drummer Chad Gracey. The roots of the band dated back to 1984 in York Pennsylvania, where all four members grew up and met. Their musical beginnings started in the 8th grade when Gracey, Taylor and Dahlheimer played in an instrumental band called First Aid. Ed Kowalcyzk was the last member to join after being encouraged by a junior high music teacher to form a band for an eight grade talent show. Kowalcyk ko-WALL-chick originally wanted to join the band as just a guitarist, but they already had someone who played lead. The band knew he could sing and talked him into becoming the singer and rhythm guitar player. His audition would consist of him belting out a Duran Duran tune. Taking the stage name Public Affection they developed into a competent live cover band those early shows saw band play sets heavily consisting of songs by Psychadelic Furs, Violent Femmes, REM, U2, & Bryan Adams. Kowalcysk would tell the LA Times “We all learned a lot from a book about U2,”, referring to the book “Unforgettable Fire” by
Taylor would add “We related (to U2) so much,. “Reading the biography was in many ways like reading a story about ourselves, except with different names.” By 1987 the band started writing their own material and Rockstar fantasies weren’t far from the members minds with Chad Taylor telling the LA Times Ed and I would sit in the back of our classrooms,“and instead of working on, like, calculus, we’d think about the kind of tour bus we’d have.”

While school may have afforded the members a place to daydream it was also instrumental to their success. The members would credit several music teachers with helping them learn song arrangements, orchestration and music theory that they would rely on to craft their songs.
Another piece of the puzzle was their hometown of York, Pennsylvania. A working class town where harley davidson and caterpiller factories employed a lot of the town’s faithful, it served as an inspiration for their music., the members parents thought a career in rock n’ roll seemed unattainable. One of the first gigs the band had was at the inaugural dance at the temple beth israel in York. The band followed it up with another gig at the temple selling tickets at $4 a piece. Before they knew it 400 people paid the ticket price to see the band. Some people had to be turned away at the door. That’s when they knew when they were onto something. The band was soon booking gigs at local venues and landed them a manager in David Sestak who initially refused calls to work with the band. It wasn’t until Taylor’s father phone Sestak and according to Spin Magazine stated’ either you’re going to listen to the band or you’re going make the biggest mistake of your life.” Sestak liked what he heard, but he told the band they needed an album so they could go to record labels and try to get a contract.
The band was business savvy. They raised $5000 in cash from family and friends who bought shares in their debut record at $100 a piece. They were essentially junk bonds. That seed money would help the band release their record 1988’s “The Death of a Dictionary. Under the monicker Public Affection. It would be released on their own label and sold at shows and local record shops. It’s estimated they put out about 2000 copies of their debut record. The song “Good Pain” would show up on their follow up release, their first album under their new monicker Live. In 1989, during their senior year the band was at a crossroads do they continue to pursue music or go to college. The band would given themselves two years to make a career in music.

I’ve had so many people request that I cover Drowning Pool on my channel and that time has finally come. . Hailing from Dallas Texas, much like the band Tripping Daisy who i covered a few months back, the link is down below to that video. Drowning Pool would sprout up in the mid 90’s, but wouldn’t gain national exposure until their hit single Bodies became one of the biggest hit songs of the summer of 2001. Two events though would almost derail the band’s career, one was the 9/11 attacks, and the other, was the death of one of their lead singer Dave Williams members. Today let’s explore what happened.

Drowning Pool was formed in Dallas, Texas in 1996 by Guitarist C.J. Pierce and drummer Mike Luce (Loose). The band took its name from the Ross MacDonald's 1951 novel of which was eventually into a film starring Paul Newman.
CJ and Mike were originally from New Orleans and had played together for almost a decade together before deciding to move to Dallas. CJ would tell Designer Magazine that New Orleans was a difficult city to get gigs in because bar owners wanted bands to play cover songs and the pair wanted to perform their own original material. In addition to that they found it difficult to find like minded players CJ would tell Just a Rock and Roll Junkie Mike moved to Dallas for like two years and that's where he met Stevie. Mike came back to New Orleans and we were looking for a bass player and a singer and Stevie was looking to put a band together as well and it just made sense to move to Dallas in 1996. The music scene was kicking ass with Pantera tearing it up" he'd remember
The band played with a few different frontmen before Dave Williams entered the picture around 1998. Williams himself was a veteran of the Dallas music scene having performed with numerous bands over almost a decade playing in outfits named Cheri Lane and Mister Lovedog. One of his friends early in his career was Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell who gave Williams the nickname "Stage".
Drowning Pool’s influences would include a broad spectrum of old school rock rock bands including Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Ratt, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Skid Row, Cinderella,as well as Black Sabbath and more current acts at the time including local heroes Pantera. Of course there was another band the quartet liked as Williams would tell hiponline in 2001 "I think the one bonding question that brought us all together and that was if we liked Faith No More. After that, the rest is history and we’ve been together for three years" he'd say
Bassist Stevie Benton would tell Ghost Cult Magazine about how the band started out as just a fun project with no too much forethought
We had been a club band in Dallas for a couple of years before it all started, we never thought we would do anything more than that to be honest, we were just playing during the week-ends for beer money. All of the sudden more and more people were crowding in the venues where we were playing and then it felt almost like a blink of the eye.
Before the band even got their first major record deal, the band attracted the attention of german liquor company Jaegermister who sponsored the group . Williams would tell Billboard magazine “it boosted our confidence quite a bit because all of a sudden it was like wow somebody likes our band. It felt good and then right after that we signed with Wind Up so it was like the machine is rolling now. ”
Mike Luce would tell Designer Magazine what came next revealing “We did a demo at a friends house back in Dallas and we were just playing local gigs. Then one of the guitarists for sevendust was living in dallas, saw us and we just kept bugging him to let us do a couple of openers for them. We did three or four shows in a couple of states down south.” It wasn’t too long after these dates that Drowning Pool started touring with groups like Kittie and their demo they recorded to get radio airplay. The late 80’s were a difficult time for some high profile rock musicians who enjoyed success a decade or several years prior. Rock N’ Roll bad boy Ted Nugent’s career seemed pretty quiet during this time and some people even counted him out. But he wasn’t the only one struggling at the timer as former Styx frontman Tommy Shaw was charting embarking on a solo career having released 3 albums, While Night Ranger’s bassist Jack Blades was reeling with the breakup of his band. It would seem strange that three musicians having lulls in their careers would become an attractive prospect to one of the biggest A&R men in the music industry, but it happened Damn Yankees would be born. Today, let’s explore the history of Damn Yankees.

Geffen Records A&R man John Kalodner seemed like an expert in reviving struggling musicians careers/. He helped Aerosmith and Whitesnake reinvent themselves and he had the same plan for Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades and Ted Nugent.. He would tell Ultimate Classic Rock "I just had this idea – I think I had dinner with Jack Blades or maybe Tommy Shaw and for some reason, I got in this mindset,""I knew Ted Nugent well and he wasn’t really doing anything. Night Ranger wasn’t really doing anything, and Tommy Shaw was kind of in and out with Styx. So I came up with this crazy idea to have the three of them have a supergroup."

Ted Nugent would establish himself in the 1970’s as one of the bad boys of rock n’ roll, but like many musicians who were popular in the 70’s, a decade later musical tastes had changed and newer sounds and bands had taken over.. Tommy Shaw meanwhile would front the pop-rock/ adult oriented group Styx where he would clash with Dennis DeYoung over the band’s sound. Jack Blades meanwhile cut his teeth singing, playing bass and writing songs for Night Ranger, but the record label according to him destroyed the band telling the LA Times in 1991 “Sister Christian,” Night Ranger’s big 1984 hit, was a ballad, and from that point on, Blades recalled, “Our record company only allowed us to release more ballads, and that really destroyed a good rock ‘n’ roll band.”
The origins of Damn yankees dated back to 1988 when to Shaw and Nugent were sitting together at a music show show business dinner in florida. Following the meal Shaw told Nugent according to the Chicago Tribune “When it was over we were saying why don’t we get together after we finish promoting our records.” It would be Shaw and his manager who called up Kalodner’s office asking for Nugent’s number. Kalodner would claim that Nugent thought the idea was initially stupid, but after much convincinghe gave it a try.

The early days of 1988 initially saw Shaw and Nugent jamming together on acoustic guitars and coming up with the song “Come Again” which ended up on the group’s debut album.At the time the band had a stand in player on bass and while Nugent and Shaw felt chemistry, Kalodner felt like the band was missing something. That’s when he enlisted Jack Blades of Night Ranger fame. Blades would tell the LA Times in the same 1991 interview “After we finished doing our last album, we basically broke up because they picked up their option to do another album and we refused, because they would have stuffed us into the garbage can again,” “Three days later, a friend of mine told me Ted and Tommy were rehearsing over in New York City and he said, ‘Hey, why don’t you go and see what it’s like?’

“So I flew to New York three days after Night Ranger broke up, and the next thing I knew, the Damn Yankees were happening.”

Silverchair was one of biggest bands to come out of Australia. The rock trio would make a mark a few years after grunge had taken over.. In fact, they had their big break not even a year after Kurt Cobain died. This put Silverchair in the unique category of post-Nirvana alt-rock acts that included the likes of Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd, Bush, and Local H. Silverchair would also end Australia’s musical draught by being the first band to have a debut album chart in the top 10 in America since 1982’s Men At Work’s record and the first Australian band in 5 years to have an album chart in the top 10. The last band before them was INXS.

Vocalist and guitarist Daniel Johns grew up in a musical home with his parents frequently blasting Black Sabbath and Deep Purple records. Johns and his schoolmate, a drummer nme Ben Gillies (GILL EEES) started jamming together as teenagers in 1992 in Newcastle, Australia,a blue collar working town north of Sydney, The pair wanted to get serious about music and enlisted bassist Chris Joannou (Joe-Knew) and called themselves Innocent Criminals. They soon started jamming on Pearl Jam songs before writing their own.

By the spring of 1994, a neighbour of Johns told the young musician about a demo tape contest called Pick Me that was being broadcast on the TV show NOMAD and being sponsored by local radio station Triple J FM. John’s was a little skeptical telling Rolling Stone “We’d been in competitions before and didn’t do shit. But we sent in our tape.”

Silverchair would be one of more than 800 entires into the contest and thought their tape would be lost in the shuffle. Their tape they submitted was credited to their old monicker Innocent Criminals. One of the show’s judges heard the almost 7 minute long demo of Tomorrow and was blown away It was no surprise the band’s demo stood out considering how awful some of the submissions were. one band did a song about tuna fish while another artist submitted a song that heavily sampled movies include the fugitive and star trek. That judge who discovered Silverchair would be a video director named Robert Hambling who told rolling Stone in 1996
“It stood out even stronger because I’d just listened to about 80 or 100 demos back-to-back,” From my point of view, in a competition to find new talent, you couldn’t find a more perfect example than three young lads in their bedrooms in Newcastle with a song that, I believed, could be a No. 1 megaworldwide smash hit.”

The other judges concurred and awarded Silverchair the show’s grandprize, which included a full day recording session to spruce up Tomorrow, a video shoot for the single at an old prison. By June of 1994 the video for Tomorrow aired on the TV Show Nomad and Triple JJJ FM added it to their rotation .

Within a week of the band getting radio airplay record labels were chomping at the ability to sign the band. John’s mother who managed the group at the time was being contacted by Australian labels including Murmur who was owned by Sony. The reps for Murmur went to a local gig the band played at in Newcastle. What’s funny is that the reps went to a local newcastle pub called the Jewels Taverns but because hte boys were underage they weren’t allowed to play there, so they had to play in the restaurant next door to the bar.The band signed withMurmur records who released Tomorrow as a single under their new band name Silverchair. The name originated from combining the Nirvana song Sliver, which one of the members thought was spelled silver and the track Berlin Chair by You Am I. A month after it’s release Tomorrow topped the charts in Australia selling 175,000 copies. It was estimated that approximately 1 percent of australia’s population purchased the single.

Released as part of Dire Straits fifth album, Brothers in Arms, the single Money for Nothing would prove to be the British band’s biggest song of their career, but it also garnered an enormous amount of controversy. One country went as far as to ban the song from public airwaves resulting in a backlash from some radio stations Let’s explore what happened in today’s video.
The single money for nothing was a massive hit for Dire Straits topping the top 40 charts in several countries including America. .In addition to that it won an MTV VMA for video of the year in 1986 in addition to receiving 11 nominations and took home a grammy award for best rock performance by a duo or group.
Dire Straits vocalist and guitarist Mark Knopfler would cite ZZ Top as one of the main influences on the song as the band was a huge staple on MTV during the mid 80’s. The song’s origin came to Knopfler during a visit he made to a department store in New York City. An employee dressed in work boots, a baseball cap and checkered shirt walked up to Knopfler as he watched MTV and said the following , "what are those, Hawaiian noises?...that ain't workin'," etc. The exchange gave Knopfler an idea for a song and he soon started started writing lyrics using pieces of the actual conversation he had with the stranger. The song would be written from the perspective of the store employee he met that day. Sting would also sing background vocals on the song and be credited as a co-writer on the song with Knopfler. Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx would claim years later that the song was about his band's lifestyle and that it was a motley crue video playing in the department store the day Knopfler became inspired to write the song.
While the song was a massive hit for the band it also drew controversy for being labelled ****phobic for it’s use of the f word in the lyrics. Knopfler would tell Bill Flanagan in 1984 I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real…
Rolling stone Magazine brought up the controversy in 1985 with, Knopflerrevealing “I got an objection from the editor of a **** newspaper in London – he actually said it was below the belt. Apart from the fact that there are stupid **** people as well as stupid other people, it suggests that maybe you can’t let it have so many meanings – you have to be direct. In fact, I’m still in two minds as to whether it’s a good idea to write songs that aren’t in the first person, to take on other characters. The singer in “Money for Nothing” is a real ignoramus, hard hat mentality – somebody who sees everything in financial terms. I mean, this guy has a grudging respect for rock stars. He sees it in terms of, well, that’s not working and yet the guy’s rich: that’s a good scam. He isn’t sneering.”
While the video was a massive success on MTV winning video of the year in 1986 at the VMA’s. Mark Knopfler wasn’t a fan of doing videos and al ot of the bands videos up until this point in time saw the band playing the song live. in the book i want my MTV director Steve Barron was asked by the band’s record label to convince Knopfler to shoot a different type of video. recalled meeting the band on tour in Europe in an effort to convince the band to do a new type of video saying “i really wanted to use a new computer technology called Paintbox, which was used to do colorization in commercials and to create logos for corporations” Barron would take Knopfller and his girlfriend to dinner and broach the subject and as Knopfler telling him how MTV needs to be shook up and while Knopfler was about to say no his girlfriend interjected and said “wow you’re so right about that, that’s exactly what mtv needs.”
In January of 2011 it was announced by the Canadian broadcast standards council that Money for Nothing was too offensive to be played on the canadian airwaves singling out the line “that little f word” in the second verse. The Canadian broadcast standards intervened after a resident

I’ve covered a lot of artists who have been banned from SNL including the Replacements, Rage Against the Machine, FEAR and the temporary ban of Elvis Costello. The links to those vidoes are down below! But today I want to talk about a more recent incident that happened in 2005 that saw the band System of a Down anger NBC’s censors and resulting in the group being banned from the show.

2005 saw System of a Down release not one, but two albums mesmerize in may 2005 followed by hypnotic later in may of tha tyear. To promote their first release mesmerize the band appeared on the may 7th episode of the show with host johnny knoxville. Some episode highlights apart from system of a down that night were that american idol judge paula abdul made a guest appearance in the cold open and introduced system of a down’s second performance and it was jason sudekis first appearance as a cast member and will forte’s mother appeared on weekend update.

System of a Down performed two songs that night their massive hit ‘B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Bombs)’ off their new album followed by aerials off toxicity. BYOB’s strong anti-war message against the second iraq war made the NBC censors nervous, given how politically divisive the second iraq war was

While the song’s lyrics contain the profanity laden lyric “Where the f&&&are you?”. NBC allowed the band to play the song with the profanity but ran the show on a five second delay so it could be bleeped out. At this point in time SNL wasn’t running on a delay but made an exception that night. The network was successful in bleeping out the curse words, but it was an off the cuff moment that made it’s past NBC’s censors when guitarist Daron Malakian walked up to the microphone and said “fuck yeah!” An NBC spokesmanEW.com that the network has received no complaints regarding the incident, though the network issued a statement slamming System of a Down and their management for the and i quote “unscripted expletive” and claimed the off the cuff moment was removed from later broadcasts of the episode.

The band would never be invited again onto the show, but in 2018 host Tina Fey covered the song chop suey during a skit. 2005 was a crazy year for tv censorship as motley crue also landed themselves in hot water with NBC.

Motley Crue Story

Today’s story is a pretty strange one. Back in 2005 Motley Crue appeared on an American Television Network to promote their anthology album at the time. The whole appearance ended with the band turning around and suing the television network for hurting album and concert sales and violating their free speech rights Let’s explore what happened in today’s video.

On December 31, 2004 Jay Leno’s tonight show on nbc held a new year’s eve episode with Motley Crue as the musical guest. The band was promoting their anthology album called Red, White and Crue. Motley Crue performed two of their classic songs girls girls girls and dr. feelgood . During Motley Crue’s performance of Girls Girls Girls frontman Vince Neil turned to drummer Tommy Lee and said, used an expletive as you can see here.

Of course the Federal Communications Commission who is responsible for monitoring the broadcast ariwaves received viewer complaints that probably could be counted on one hand. Fearing the wrath of the federal government who could’ve fined the network or worse removed their licenses, NBC quickly banned Motley Crue from any future appearanc Tommy Lee would appear by himself in an upcoming television reality show called Tommy Lee goes to college despite the ban, Motley Crue’s lawsuit alleged the network censored the group as a whole to please the federal government so no actions would be taken against NBC

The band’s lawyers pointed to U2, System of a Down and John Mayer for having similar slip ups but not facing the same consequences. Motley Crue’s lawyers zeroed

Best known for their hit song How Bizarre, OMC’s hit track was inescapable in the mid 90’s.. It would be a number one hit in both Canada and the US, it would reach the top 10 in over a dozen countries and resulted in their lone album selling millions of copies worldwide. The group’s sole album appropriately titled how bizarre would be new zealand’s biggest selling musical export. While How Bizarre was an upbeat song, OMC’s career was not. Drugs, gangs, lawsuits and health issues plagued the group and that’s what were going to explore in today’s video.

Pauly Fuemana would be the brainchild of OMC. He would be born in the late 60’s to polynesian parents in the impoverished auckland suburb of otara. Growing up in a difficult set of circumstances Fuemana was no stranger to the police frequently committing crimes, spending time in youth prison and getting involved with gangs, Amongst all the turmoil in Fuemana’s life he found joy in creating music with his brothers and sister. By the 80’s Fuemana was performing with an R&B group called House Party which included his brothers Phil and Tony and his sister Christine. He would start out as a dancer before teaching himself guitar and eventually singing background vocals for the group.The group would eventually change their name to Fuemana and released an album in 1993 on their own indie label. It would be the same year that Fuemana founded a new group called OMC which stood for the Otara Millionaire’s Club, which featured his brother Paul. Little did they know that in just a few short years that name would ring true, but it would come at a cost.

OMC’s early music resembled the rap that was popular in america at the time and while their early shows attracted some big crowds it was the wrong type of people. According to billboard magazine Otara’s Millionaire’s Club shows to see audience members from US exported gangs including the bloods and the crypts and it was at that point that Fuemana decided to quit the group, take the OMC name with him and start from scratch. His new music would draw on more of his south pacific roots. He would tell billboard in 1997 “we were doing all these gigs and gang members started showing up. In Auckland there is a very bad bloods and crips situation. I just decided to try and steer away from that and go in another direction where i could grow and get more into music that i wanted to make.” Helping Fuemana would be a producer named Alan Janseen who produced an underground New Zealand compilation record called “Proud” highlighting artists from South Auckland. OMC's contribution to the record would, We R the OMC.

Janseen and Fuemana would start writing songs together with the pair coming up with 8 songs in just 4 hours, one of which was How Bizarre. Originally titled Duff It Up, the name was quickly changed to How Bizarre. Author Simon Grigg who wrote a book about Fuemana would explain the origins of the song’s influences telling The Star newspaper “It has the Mariachi trumpets there which Pauly got from listening to Herb Alpert records when he was a kid,”.
“And the acoustic guitar is an Alan thing, from hearing folk rock on the radio, and Pauly’s vocal is almost a hip hop consciousness-style. So it was all these elements mixed together.
“And Alan's wife kept on saying ‘how bizarre’ about things, and we thought ‘that's a good phrase.’ You’d say something to her, and she’d go ‘how bizarre’. So it came from her.”
The day following that marathon writing session, OMC was booked to play big day out festival in auckland where they debuted the song live for the first time. It was a disastrous gig, people walked out on fuemana, but despite their poor live reception Australia seemed to love Paul with Rolling Stone referring to Fuemana”the marvin ****e of the pacific.” By late 1995 OMC would issue their debut album titled How Bizarre on local indie label Huh. It became a massive seller in New Zeland moving about 35,000 units.

The album would be distributed worldwide by major label Mercury-Polygram Records A spokesperson from the label would tell billboard “people here felt strongly about the album and song, but international sales don’t always translate because

British Heavy metal band Cradle of Filth has attracted it’s fair share of controversy throughout their career. Today we’re going to take a look at the worldwide controversy that erupted over a shirt they released that rolling stone magazine dubbed and i quote “the most controversial shirt in rock history. “

Now because this is youtube i’m not going to show the shirt and chances are if you’re watching this video you’re either already familiar with the shirt or you can use google to look up exactly what i am talking about.

The infamous t-shirt began as a joke. The band’s frontman Dani Filth would recall to Rolling Stone “it was 1993 and we were about to go on tour with norwegian black metal band emperor. We had a different t-shirt at the time it had a picture of my wife who was all done up in black metal regalia and it said the black goddess rises” on it. We needed t oget a new shirt done quickly for the tour. We’d already come up with the vestal mtubation image and phrase but we stil needed a back print for it.”

It was during a discussion amongst the band members about what to put on the back of the shirt that somebody uttered the infamous phrase. ”Jesus is a expletive.” While the band was pushing the boundaries with their t-shirts, they had to find a t-shirt shop that was willing to print the shirt. Every t-shirt shop in band’s hometown of hadleigh (had-la) in suffolk refused to print the shirt, They found one printing shop in another town who agreed to do it on the down low and even gave the screens to the band as they wanted no evidence that the shirts were printed there.

It was estimated that within it’s first six years of release 25,000 shirts had been sold. With so many of those shirts floating around it was only a matter of time before somebody wore the shirt, angered someone and the media covered it and that’s exactly what happened across the UK. So can you be charged with wearing a shirt as offensive as cradle of filth’s? Well kerrang in 1999 would actually interview a law firm about the shirt and they would sate

“You can be charged under obscenity legislation if a t-shirt is capable of being grossly offensive to a certain minority or even special interest group. You can also be charged with wearing something that’s considered to cause harassment, alarm and distress or encourage an altercation.That’s exactly what happened in the UK in the mid 90’s and early 2000’s.

Starting in 1996 a fan of the band named Roy Kenyon who was 29 at the time was arrested by police in London after wearing the shirt in London. Kenyon would be charged with and i quote profane representation under the 1839 act and fined 150 pounds. The following year it would be a member of Cradle of Filth who got into trouble for wearing the shirt. The band was waiting at a ferry terminal in Dover England to take the band to the Netherlands to play at a music festival. Their drummer Nicholas Barker was wearing the shirt while waiting at the terminal. The police charged him with resisting arrest and creating a public disorder. The band would still be able to make their gig as Barker only spend two hours with the police.

The shirt’s transgressions weren’t just limited to Europe as the same year in America a 24 year old record store employee named Andrew Love was arrested for wearing the shirt at a mall in Ocala, Florida. He would be arrested for violating the states obscenity law but the charges would be dropped. Of course religious groups criticized the move with the Caotholic League of America referring to the dropped charges as being and i quote “victory for sickos” and called out the band claiming their songs had numerous references to devil worship.

In 2001 the shirt became a political issue in Scotland as the local provost in glasgow pushed to have the local tower records stop selling the shirts. The store would be raided twice by the police. Tower Records initially fought back but the media coverage would result in the store selling out of the shirts
During the band’s appearance at ozzfest in 2002 and 2003, Sharon Osbourne banned the sale of the shirt. The members of Cradle of Filth would admit that the decision was likely made not because of political correctness or Sharon’s

As the first non-solo act on Apple Records, Badfinger had remarkable chemistry, huge hits on the charts, and they’d be critically acclaimed as natural successors to The Beatles. In fact some referred to the band as and i quote ‘the new Fab Four. and they were handpicked by the members of the Beatles themselves.’ Their songs and albums made millions, But a series of financial and legal complications would lead to the deaths of its two main songwriters, and a bittersweet legacy going forward. This is their story.
Badfinger’s roots go back to the early 60s, in the close-knit music scene of Swansea (swanzee) Wales, a port city almost like a little liverpool.. While initially performing on the local circuit using temporary names, their first serious incarnation was as the Iveys, which came together in 1961. Their early lineup consisted of frontman Pete Ham on lead guitar, Dai Jenkins on rhythm guitar, Ron Griffiths on bass and Roy Anderson on drums.The Iveys sets heavily covered black american music.
By 1965 drummer Roy Anderson’s work life took hold. He was replaced by Mike Gibbins, who was introduced to the band through Griffiths. In an interview with Gary Katz for the documentary Badfinger: The Director’s Cut, Gibbins recalled feeling uncertain about this transition, but eventually accepted his role.
“It was really strange, because these guys were like mods. They had criss-cross-patterned trousers and short hair like the Faces, [but] they were playing good stuff,” he’d say.
“Pete [Ham] didn’t like my playing. He thought it was pretty abysmal, and that my bass drum sounded flipped out. I went for a pint at the bar around the corner and thought that was that, but to my amazement, he came over and said, ‘We want you in the band.’
The Iveys soon became one of Swansea’s top local band and shared billing with another emerging act, The Mojos. Bill Collins, a session musician, was impressed with the Iveys’ performance, and took them under his wing. While not a manager per-se, he did have industry connections, and got them a job as the backing band for David Garrick. Their shows were so popular that the band members commanded more attention than Garrick himself, particularly Dai Jenkins, with Gibbins recalling in a separate interview,
“We’d be doing a gig in Ireland, and he’d be singing Mrs. Applebee, and the girls would be screaming, screaming, screaming, but then he’d go, ‘Hang on a minute,’ look to the other side and…there would be crowds around Dai.” “I think that’s the reason we got fired."
Collins moved with The Iveys to London, England, where they’d set up base at his communal house in Golders Green. The band was being paid 5 pounds a week as a retainer, not a whole ot. He encouraged the band to focus on songwriting and frontman Pete Ham would take that to heart, demoing tons of original songs using the house’s makeshift studio. Meanwhile the band’s continued live repertoire of R&B, Motown, and Beatles hits began drawing a lot of attention from record labels. Collins was insistent on signing with the fledgling Apple Records, which was owned by the Beatles themselves. The label was known for being the most artist friendly label at the time.
In 1967, guitarist Dai Jenkins was dismissed from the band after his commitment waned, and was replaced by 24 year old Tom Evans, a native of Liverpool, England who would become another piece of the signature lineup. As explained in Dan Matovina’s book, Without You: The Tragic History of Badfinger, The Iveys were in instant awe of Evans’ musicianship, but his personality took a bit of getting used to, with Gibbins remembering:
“As soon as Tom moved in, he was complaining. He was from Liverpool and we were from Wales. He said that he couldn’t relate to anybody. My feeling was, ‘Just tag along, man. This is a band.”
Local musician Will Youatt telling Loudersound “They played all the local haunts,” “They were a good-looking sort of band, but no great shouts musically. Then they got rid of Dai and Ronnie and replaced ’em with the Liverpool boys – then they became songwriters.”
By the next year, The Iveys prepared demos for Apple Records, a
