Lyric Video by Johnny Chew

Lyrics:
Bet you think you're so poetic
Quoting epics and ancient prose
Truth be told you're quite pathetic
Mr. Eclectic Allan Poe

Did you ever stop and give a wonder to
Just who you were talking to
The very expert on the foolish things
That men have said to woo and win me over
What a poser, you think you're so interesting

Twist my hair around your finger
Oh, grandiose thinker of mine
Talking ‘bout some dead composer
You’re just a stoner patronizing me

Did you ever stop and give a wonder to
Just who you were talking to
The very expert on the foolish things
That men have said to woo and win me over
What a poser, you think you're so interesting

I was reaching deep for a couple of the tracks in this video. "Varsity" is a piece I composed around a recording of my high school marching band (North Side High School, Fort Wayne, IN, Class of '73). You can hear the recording of the actual marching band in this track.

"Dig" is a piece I composed with a couple pals one evening while we were, undoubtedly, high. The premise of the piece is that 3 Beatniks are having drinks in a Beatnik bar. You can tell it's a Beatnik bar because there is a solo alto sax player in the background playing outside licks, man. The 3 Beatniks are having a deep conversation - at least they think it's deep. In truth, they're not actually saying much, but they're so high they thing they're solving the world's problems.

Harold Battiste Jr. Alone In The Stars (Official Music Video) C+P Lo-Flo Records 2024
Harold Battiste Jr. Alone In The Stars (Official Music Video) C+P Lo-Flo Records 2024 Hotney 24 Streams • 2 years ago

LOS ANGELES, CA – Lo-Flo Records presents “Alone in the Stars,” the first of four singles to be released between July and September 2024 featuring the talents of legendary jazz musician and producer Harold Battiste. Jr. Written by prolific composer Jane McNealy, “Alone in the Stars” will be released on July 19, followed by “Florence Nightingale,” “All of You,” and an extended version of “Why Can’t I Have It Too.” These jazz gems, unearthed from McNealy’s extensive archive, hearken back to the 1970s. The video for "Alone in the Stars" will premiere on July 26, with subsequent videos dropping one week after each single’s release on Lo-Flo’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@lo-florecords1599. Listen to the label’s next single on your preferred streaming platform: https://hypeddit.com/m0crbk.

Originally written in 1977 with lyrics, this instrumental version of “Alone in the Stars” was recorded and produced by Battiste and McNealy around the same time. The song opens with McNealy's poignant keyboard melodies intertwined with Battiste's signature saxophone, a laidback bossa nova-like drum beat, and cosmic synth strings. McNealy explains further about the recording process, “I played all the keyboards and he (Battiste) played the saxophone and turned on the drum machine… It was always very laid-back and not a big deal.” The song's dreamlike ambiance is a testament to its title. McNealy poetically elaborates on the song's meaning, “‘Alone in the Stars’ is an ephemeral dream of disassociation and not belonging. This song is very personal because it’s so introspective and indirect. The song is like going through infinity, lost in space and the stars, or a winding river by itself, disappearing into a memory. Or a naked tree in the middle of an arid landscape, reaching into the sky, like Icarus drawn to the burning light of the sun.” Listening to "Alone in the Stars" today, the emotional depth McNealy and Battiste infused into the song decades ago remains palpable.

Harold Battiste, Jr.
A man of many talents and staggering achievements, Harold Battiste, Jr. was born in New Orleans in October 1931. While he began his career as a saxophonist and pianist, his first high-profile collaborations as a producer came with the major success of Sam Cooke’s 1957 track “You Send Me” and the discovery and introduction of New Orleans artist Mac Rebennack as Dr. John. Battiste is well known for his work as a studio arranger and the co-founder of AFO (All for One) Records with Melvin Lastie in 1961. It was notably the first African-American musician-owned label in the American South, achieving immediate success with Barbara George’s massive hit single, “I Know (You Don’t Love Me No More)"—reaching #1 on Billboard’s R&B single chart, and later covered by Fats Domino, Cher, Ike & Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, and others. AFO was also home to Ellis Marsalis' debut album, Monkey Puzzle. Moving his operation to Los Angeles, further achievements included contributions on Ike and Tina Turner’s album River Deep, Mountain High, and on Tom Waits’ Blue Valentine. Battiste’s biggest commercial success developed over the course of 15 years working with Sonny and Cher. As their musical director, he arranged hits like “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” This is in addition to his work on their television variety show, which inaugurated Battiste as the first Black musical director on an American TV series.

After 30 years in Los Angeles, Battiste moved back to his home state, where he joined the Jazz Studies faculty at the University of New Orleans, and established the AFO Foundation. Battiste received numerous accolades, including the Beau Arts Award, the Mayor’s Arts Award, and the Governor’s Arts Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1998, his birthday was declared Harold Battiste Day by the City of New Orleans. In 2010, the Historic New Orleans Collection published his autobiography, Unfinished Blues: Memories of a New Orleans Music Man. Harold Battiste, Jr. passed away in June 2015.

Tom Browne ~ Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.) 1980 Jazz Funk Purrfection Version
Tom Browne ~ Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.) 1980 Jazz Funk Purrfection Version Hotney 18 Streams • 2 years ago

Jazz trumpeter Tom Browne topped the R&B charts for four weeks with a song that was a valentine to his Jamaica home in Queens, New York. Jamaica is a middle class neighborhood that has a large African American and Caribbean population. It was established in 1656 as a colony when the Dutch ruled New Netherlands which included territory now held by New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and parts of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

The name Jamaica came from the Lenape Indians who called the area "yamecah" which meant beaver. The Dutch spelled it with a "j", which in their language is sounds like "y". Over time, the English took over and retained the Dutch spelling of jamecah and the hard J sound slowly took over and the name transformed to Jamaica.

Thomas Frederick Browne was born October 30, 1954 in Jamaica, Queens. He was a student of New York's High School of Music and Art he became a regular on the New York jazz scene as a trumpet player and in 1978 he played in a club where George Benson also played and was offered a contract with GRP Music, distributed by Clive Davis' Arista Records.

He is also a licensed air pilot in addition to gigging with other jazz greats like Lonnie Liston Smith, Sonny Fortune and Weldon Irvine.

He released his first LP "Browne Sugar" in 1979 which contained a cover of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway hit, "The Closer I Get To You" and disco oriented jazz funk.

His second LP, "Love Approach" released in 1980 was his breakout hit album that contained "Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.)" a #1 R&B hit for four weeks. Surprisingly, the song totally missed the Hot100 probably due to the disco backlash and was not promoted.

He decided to name a jam he had done "Funkin' For Jamaica" while he was at his parents home and wrote the bass line. He handed that to Bernard Wright, a jazz keyboardist and the son of Roberta Flack. He loved what he heard and got right into the groove and laid down some awesome synth tracks, with Dave Grusin on piano, Marcus Miller on bass, Bobby Broom on guitar, Buddy Williams on drums and Crusher Bennett on percussion in a jam session that really got cookin!

The final piece of this puzzle was vocalist Toni Smith, whose vibrant vocals resembled Chaka Khan which led to a lot of confusion when record buyers asked for "the new Chaka Khan" tune. To give the song more energy, the group developed a rap and it included the party sounds of many of their neighbors in Jamaica.

Hit singles have eluded him since then, but he built a strong jazz following that saw him release an album a year up to 1984, then sporadically with the most recent waxing, "S'up" in 2010. While the Hot100 ignored him, he got the last laugh as "Funkin' For Jamaica" has become a touchstone and a staple of house parties and dance DJ's around the world all the way to today that prove its universal appeal and influence. It's a happy party song, funky but firmly planted in jazz, just like the residents of Jamaica, NY.
