If you need proof that the past informs the present, check the way Grace Weber’s childhood work in gospel choirs nourished her fully blossomed career. The 35-year-old Wisconsin native has one of those voices that uses a from-the-heart vibe to invite listeners deeper and deeper into a song. Take last year’s “Lonely,” for example. From floating in a cooing upper register, to rendering a couple gut-shaking ruminations towards the bottom, Weber wrings lots of emotion from a sweet little tune. It’s easy to hear how the R&B atmosphere absorbed early on with Milwaukee’s Central City Youth Choir helps her deliver a sweet punch now. Positive signs about possible paths have always come her way. At 16, she participated in ‘Showtime At The Apollo,’ and during her college years, she got even more serious about music studies. The payoff arrived with her work on Chance the Rapper’s celebrated ‘Coloring Book’ in 2016; she picked up a GRAMMY for her participation on that jewel. The soul grooves she’s so skilled at defined 2021’s ‘A Beautiful Space’ debut; last September she impressed fans with its follow-up, ‘Paperflower,’ and its lead video, “Do4Me.” She recently hit our studio to put a live spin on that one, and the album’s lead track, “Fallin’.” Catch the gospel aura on both performances.
