Steve Vai - His First 30 Years | The Documentary
Steve Vai - His First 30 Years | The Documentary Hotney 5 Streams • 4 years ago

This is the first documentary covering Steve Vai's life from 1960 to 1990. (Co-written by Steve Vai.)
The documentary has hundreds of Vai-centric facts and stories that even the most ardent fan will not have known. Complete with a Vai’esque quirky sense of humor, the video covers Vai’s life growing up, attending Berklee College, playing with several artists like Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, the David Lee Roth band, and Whitesnake, the recording of both his solo albums Flex-Able and Passion and Warfare, plus Vai’s role in the movie Crossroads, and how he helped create the JEM guitar.

Elvis: Return To Tupelo | Full Music Documentary Movie | Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley
Elvis: Return To Tupelo | Full Music Documentary Movie | Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley Hotney 4 Streams • 4 years ago

Elvis Presley may have been born with the rock 'n roll in his blood but without poverty, southern culture and a mother whom he adored, Elvis Aaron Presley might have been just another poor white guy rather than the King of Rock 'n Roll. Narrated by prolific country musician and actor Kris Kristofferson, this feature-length documentary takes an intimate look at Elvis's childhood growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi. Before the gold records, movie deals and infamous variety show performances, Elvis lived a meager and unassuming life with his parents Gladys and Vernon in a quiet Mississippi town struggling through the Great Depression.

From his father's prison time and being raised in public housing, on through his first record, pivotal partnership with Colonel Tom Parker, and concluding with his triumphant homecoming concert in 1956, this documentary offers invaluable insight into the upbringing that would result in the legendary King of Rock 'n Roll. Elvis: Return to Tupelo also features interviews with Elvis biographer Pat Broeske, journalist John Steigenthaler and Tupelo historian Roy Turner.

Guided by vintage audio and video material as well as new interviews with childhood friends, local radio personalities and contemporary musicians, ELVIS: RETURN TO TUPELO unearths the events and influences that would inspire both his music and personality.

Modulations - History of Electronic Music | Documentary
Modulations - History of Electronic Music | Documentary Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Modulations is a feature-length documentary that captures a moment in history where humans and machines are fusing to create today's most exciting sounds.

It traces the evolution of electronic music as one of the most profound artistic developments of the twentieth century. By cutting back and forth between avant-garde composers, Kraftwerk's innovative synthesizer drones, Giorgio Moroder's glacial Euro-disco, Afrika Bambaataa's electro-funk, and Prodigy's current worldwide superstarstardom, Modulations celebrates, replicates, and illuminates the nomadic drift of the post-human techno sound.

The film examines the kids who have turned the turntable into a musical instrument, disillusioned disco lovers who created acid house out of primitive synthesizers, Motor City mavericks who saw the drum machine as their escape route out of urban neglect, and a generation of British youth who transformed these blips and bleeps into dance floor anthems of their own alienation.

Modulations provides a sense of history and context in which today's electronic music can be understood. It entertains the converted and remixes the mindset of electronica's nay-sayers.

Featuring a stunning collage of interviews, cutting-edge visuals, in-studio footage, and live performances, Modulations moves at a pace that matches the energy and innovation of the music.

The Musical Movement We Don't Talk About Enough
The Musical Movement We Don't Talk About Enough Hotney 2 Streams • 4 years ago

In the late 90s, Questlove helped found a collective of musicians and artists including D'Angelo, James Poyser, J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Common, Bilal, and others like Q Tip, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Pino Palladino.

They were dubbed, somewhat accidentally, the "Soulquarians" and this collection of albums is some of the best music ever recorded and has influenced so much music, in completely other genres since.

Today I'm talking all about the Soulquarians, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, J Dilla, The Roots etc, diving into specifics of their recording process, some of the albums, their influence since, and how all throughout Questlove knew what he had to do to make it big: build a music scene

In regards to the Questlove/D'Angelo/House of Blues story - there are two versions of this story that Questlove has told. They're both the same, but the song is different. One version features Questlove playing the beat from the song "Four" by Madhouse (a Prince side project). The other, more recent telling of the story is Quest playing in the looser Dilla style. That version of the story is told in his recent interview with Talib Kweli: https://youtu.be/r_nmfs-TgGQ?t=3148

That interview also features Questlove talking about the fact that other groups had music scenes around them, and The Roots didn't.

One other correction: Questlove's moniker doesn't trace back to A Tribe Called Quest. Re-reading through his book, I realize I misunderstood the wording.

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is often cited as one of the most influential rappers of his generation. Aside from his solo career, he is also a member of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy alongside his former Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) labelmates Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q.

Raised in Compton, California, Lamar embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name K.Dot, releasing a mixtape titled Y.H.N.I.C. (Hub City Threat Minor of the Year) that garnered local attention and led to his signing with indie record label TDE. He began to gain recognition in 2010 after his first retail release, Overly Dedicated. The following year, he independently released his first studio album, Section.80, which included his debut single "HiiiPoWeR". By that time, he had amassed a large online following and collaborated with several prominent rappers. He subsequently secured a record deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, under the aegis of Interscope Records.

The Story Of Sean Paul's ‘Get Busy’ | The Story Of Hotney 7 Streams • 4 years ago

Growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, Sean Paul Henriques fell in love with dancehall music, but never imagined he’d one day become the genre’s most internationally renowned artist. After years of building a fanbase in Jamaica and the diaspora, his second album, Dutty Rock, became a make-or-break opportunity to prove that dancehall beats could transcend culture and break into the pop mainstream. He accomplished that and more with the timeless party anthem, “Get Busy”, accompanied by producer Steven ‘Lenky’ Marsden’s legendary Diwali Riddim as the track’s foundation. VICE met up with Sean Paul in Kingston to learn about his signature fusion of Jamaican Patois and hip-hop slang, how his upbringing influenced his musical style, and the legacy of the first-ever dancehall song to top the international charts.

Big Fun In The Big Town (1986) | Old School Hip Hop Doc | Def Jam Biz Markie Mr. Magic Schoolly D Hotney 8 Streams • 4 years ago

Big Fun in the Big Town is a Dutch music documentary made by the VPRO in 1986. It was directed by Bram van Splunteren and presented by Belgian TV presenter Marcel Vanthilt. The documentary was shot on location in New York City and consisted of two parts, one about rock singer Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the other about the American hip hop scene. The latter turned out to have a much bigger impact on the Dutch music scene and enjoys a cult classic status among hip-hop fans.

The documentary was made in September 1986 in eight days time and filmed in the streets of New York City. Vanthilt and his four Dutch colleagues had hired some body guards for protection from local street gangs. They managed to interview several important pioneers of early hip hop, including Run–D.M.C., LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh, Grandmaster Flash, Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, MC Shan, Russell Simmons, Mr. Magic, Schoolly D and The Last Poets. Grandmaster Flash showed his talents in scratching and DJing, Doug E. Fresh did beatboxing on a busy street corner in Harlem, New York and LL Cool J still lived with his grandmother at time of recording. The documentary crew literally arrived at a turning point for hip hop. Run–D.M.C. had just released the single "Walk This Way", their duet with the rock band Aerosmith, which would cause mainstream acceptance of the genre by a major white audience. Because of this element Big Fun in the Big Town still provides a unique time capsule. - Wikipedia
