John Birks ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie (21 October 1917 – 6 January 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter and bandleader.
In the 1940’s Gillespie, with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Jon Faddis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Chuck Mangione and balladeer Johnny Hartman

This 'Blues' is part of the performance of Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra on July 9th, 1988 at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands.

Dizzy Gillespie receives the Bird Award 1988 from the hands of Mike Hennessey, the Chairman of the jury. The announcements are made by AVRO Television producer Gerrit den Braber.
