Always inspirational, the music of saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins is also heavy and thought provoking. In the harmonic tension of his music you can hear sepia tones of the Black experience — an ancient and modern struggle told through melody and overlaid with hope. Complex time signatures swing and sway with spiritual incantations that instill reflection and peace.

We've had the good fortune to showcase works from across Wilkins' exceptional catalog. His Tiny Desk (home) concert features selections from his debut album, Omega. Here at the Desk, he opens with "AFTERLIFE RESIDENCE TIME" from his Grammy-nominated album, Blues Blood, a piece that traces Black trauma passed down by the generations through blood, which contains salt. Sodium has a long duration of residence, or time that a substance remains present, and this song is a portrait of that construct. "Fugitive Ritual, Selah," from The 7th Hand, is a hymn to the Black church and how its Sunday rituals provide the freedom to exalt, or Selah, and pause for the Holy Spirit. "THE BIG COUNTRY" is a new song from an upcoming three-volume project recorded live at The Village Vanguard. Wilkins tells me, "It's not a 'concept album,' so to speak, but rather it's about capturing the internal technologies and logics of the band as the theory."

His masterful band, with Micah Thomas on piano, bassist Ryoma Takenaga and drummer Kweku Sumbry, has a special synergy. "There's so much that happens through the music even outside of the normative realm of 'language' that I feel is important to capture in this new stage of this unit," Wilkins tells me. "I'm just always trying to push the band to new places, do something unique for myself and for the Tiny Desk audience. I thought it was important for us to attempt to bring the heat and keep it as hot as possible."

British trio FLO crossed the pond for its Tiny Desk debut in Washington, D.C. So we got V.I.P. access to Club FLO courtesy of Stella Quaresma, Reneé Downer and Jorja Douglas, complete with disco balls, martinis, a custom marquee and subtle Easter eggs tucked between the shelves for sharp-eyed fans. Still, none of the glam outshines what matters most: their harmonies.

They open with a new take on their debut single, "Cardboard Box," immediately reminding us of the chemistry that launched them. We witness their sister-like energy as they laugh, banter and dance their way through several songs from the Grammy-nominated album, Access All Areas.

FLO delivers sultry standouts — "AAA" and "On & On" — and shares stories of relationship woes with "Get It Till I'm Gone" and "Shoulda Woulda Coulda." The trio closes with two unreleased tracks, "Therapy at the Club" and "HaterBooth," hinting at what's next. The set makes clear that their next chapter will double down on powerful vocals, sisterhood and a confidence sharpened by a clear understanding of exactly what they're capable of.

Buddy Guy displays a youthful spirit during his Tiny Desk that makes you question if he really turns 90 this year. Once the music starts, his subtle speaking voice transforms into a mighty instrument, demanding your attention. Guy wails on his polka dot Stratocaster, reminding us of his skill and showmanship. The title of his latest album, Ain't Done with the Blues, is not only apt but defiant.

The elder statesman of blues is the last standing among his fellow architects of the genre like B.B. King, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Throughout his career, he has collected every accolade possible, including a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, a Kennedy Center Honors award and the National Medal of Arts. He recently took home his ninth Grammy Award, this time for best traditional blues album.

His set starts with his rollin' 1991 classic "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues" and moves into "Hoochie Coochie Man," both songs a must for any Guy performance. Then newcomer Miles Caton exuberantly joins Guy to present a pair of signature songs from the 16-time Oscar nominated film, Sinners, in which both portray blues singer Sammie "Preacher Boy" Moore. But what kind of blues show would this be if they stuck to the script? Guy takes detours into the history of the blues, playfully challenging Caton to keep up. Caton proves to be more than up to the task, letting his own powerful vocals out to play. As Guy and Caton perform together, we see the journey of artistry, the interplay of a master teacher and a student.

How do we find beauty in a broken world? This is the question that Ganavya's music asks, but lets you answer. Raised in the Hindu tradition of the harikatha — where she would sing poems called abhangs ("songs without endings") along a pilgrimage route — Ganavya has spent a life in contemplation. At the Tiny Desk, she sings the poems of today in the language of today.

Set in an aqueous groove by bassist Max Ridley and harpist Charles Overton, Ganavya's "Land" is a hymn of thanksgiving, with words by the Palestinian American poet Suheir Hammad. "Not a Burden" is a lullaby that Ganavya wrote for her mother — she asks the audience to sing with her, though it's hard not to get lost in her hypnotic vocalese. The late Wayne Shorter, who contributed a Buddhist chant for one of her albums, gave Ganavya some advice after hearing the lyrics for "draw something beautiful," a song she'd written as a younger person. "He very very lovingly and quickly dressed me down," she recounted to me. " 'Yeah, that's great when you were 14. You're not that anymore, so sing what it is.' We reckon with the fact that we are something beautiful in this world that would let us draw something beautiful."

There's something called the hagstone, an eye-shaped stone with a hole in it. As we got ready to sound check, Ganavya shared its folklore with me: "If you carry it around with you, it's supposed to keep you safe because evil does not like what's large. Only something small can fit through it. I was raised to believe that as long as you love everything that is small in this world, that you'll be safe. And that's my favorite part of Tiny Desk: There's not a single musician who didn't start from small."

The final song here is a setting for "At last…Another's heartbeat," a poem written by Marcellus "Khaliifah" Williams, a man who — in the face of death — still chose to see the beauty of this world. This song, not yet recorded, is a communal one. "There is so much beauty and comfort in being in love and just being," we sing with her, over and over, as a prayer.. Her last word is a whisper — like a last breath — then the silence of being.

We have finally brought one of our most requested artists to the Tiny Desk: Jill Scott! "I thought about you so much," Scott tells the audience. "I was, like, 'One day, Imma be on Tiny Desk!' " In celebration of her new album, To Whom This May Concern, her first in just over a decade, the Philadelphia poet shares some new music along with the classics we've been yearning for.

Most Jill Scott fans know that her albums are gateways to the live show. For over 25 years, the stage has been where she displays her true artistry as a natural-born performer. Every note and every lyric is sold — sometimes powerful and sometimes gentle, but always with a smile. Which is why she stresses before and after the show that this is "live music," and these mics aren't for decoration. As a songwriter, her ability to write for Black women and to Black men has amassed a loyal following, allowing her to sell out shows, whether she has something new to sell or not.

Draped in a dress with patterns that match her colorful and limitless vocal ability, she starts off with "A Long Walk," from her groundbreaking debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, adding a subtle nod to the late D'Angelo. The new songs, "Beautiful People" and "Don't Play," are as soulful and sultry as anything in her catalog, but everything reaches a proper climax with a version of "The Way" that made the hair on my arms stand up. During a Sarah McLachlan performance, the chills come when you least expect them. One of the most expressive singer-songwriters of her generation, McLachlan makes the goosebumps happen with her gloriously gentle, iridescent voice — particularly through her negotiation of the break between its registers. She does just that in the first song of this Tiny Desk, an almost country-fied version of her 1997 hit “Building a Mystery.” With Luke Doucet’s impossibly delicate guitar arpeggios as her guide, McLachlan takes the song beyond its edge at the very last minute, gliding into a high note that remains unresolved. It’s one of several moments here that feel miraculous.

McLachlan has long been a purveyor of such small graces. Despite her renown as founder of the Lilith Fair tour, she has been underestimated as a major player in the reinvention of pop balladry, when she updated a folk-based sound with modern-rock flourishes and a fresh, feminist perspective. Here, playing alongside her longtime collaborators Doucet and Melissa McClelland — a husband-wife duo who’ve made many beautiful albums under the name Whitehorse — she highlights the side of her art that’s grounded in deep feeling and unassuming virtuosity. At one point, she apologizes to those watching because her back is to them while she’s at the piano. But from whatever angle experienced, this is one of the Tiny Desk’s warmest and most poignant sets.

When Geese stopped by the NPR Music office in December, bassist Dominic DiGesu geeked out with a bag of trinkets to display on the Desk: a small, toy goose gifted to them on tour, a stuffed Snoopy, a figurine of Sonic cradling Jesus, Minecraft sticky notes and a Mets hat. Since the release of 2025's Getting Killed, the critical and fan reception has been wild and hard to parse — even my colleagues at All Songs Considered dove into the phenomenon. But here, the members of Geese ignore the noise and lean into their decade of collaboration together.

Geese's set is charmingly earnest and a bit melancholy, focused on the quieter moments of Getting Killed. It's truly the band in its purest form. Frontperson Cameron Winter sings seated, gazing out as he strums his guitar. Emily Green shines bright here, keeping the pulse of the band as she plays guitar with a jagged edge. The rest of the lot play mostly with their eyes closed, locked into the songs they've been touring with since last spring. As the music swells, like in "Half Real," Geese soars.

So much has happened in Miguel's world since we last saw him at NPR headquarters. Back in 2012, he was one of the very few R&B acts — including Raphael Saadiq, Bettye LaVette and Booker T. Jones — to play a Tiny Desk concert. And, much like the trajectory of this series, Miguel's music has taken some explosive twists and turns.

After performing "Sure Thing," his first song back at the Desk, Miguel says, "That one's come a long way." He reflects on that time in his life and what he's been able to do with it: "There's something about being able to wake up and do this every day, and then to come and perform it — to see the lyrics actually become a part of people's time and memories and space in this experience. I have to say I'm tremendously grateful." Miguel's clearly been on a journey of self-discovery, which we see in a medley of his hits backed by a flawless string section. And on the Spanish-sung "CAOS," he revisits his Mexican roots.

Between his 2017 album War & Leisure and last year's CAOS, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter has been relatively quiet. "I was putting my value in the wrong places, and it made it really hard to do this consistently," he says before the last song. "But, motherf*****, we back!"

The joining together of voices is a sacred act in the Black Christian church; Pastor John P. Kee's music is key to understanding that act in gospel music. During this Tiny Desk, the gospel music essentials of call and response, modulation, articulated phrasing, choir section solos and full-throated singing are expertly on display. Whether solo or with a choir, Pastor Kee's powerful voice and praise-forward songwriting have remained at the forefront of his music ministry for nearly 40 years.

Performing here with a four-piece band and a seven-person choir, Pastor Kee's set journeys through both his traditional and contemporary gospel output. "I Believe" and "Lily in the Valley" transform the Tiny Desk into an old, wood-floored country church. "Life & Favor" and "Standing in the Need" aren't just notes and melodies — the testimony inspires. The uptempo "Oh How Wondrous" and "Mighty God" joyfully proclaim, with reverence, the power of God. Prepare your spirit to be filled and get your hands ready to clap.

This week, we celebrate the Tiny Desk Contest community with concerts by some of our favorite entrants over the years.

We receive thousands of submissions for the Tiny Desk Contest. And every year, there's a clear winner, but there are also a handful of artists we just fall in love with. So, to kick off our very first Tiny Desk Contest takeover, please meet Sally Baby's Silver Dollars.

"I've Got No More Tears Left to Cry," the song the band submitted for our 2024 contest, nearly won the whole thing — it was a photo finish with The Philharmonik. Yet band bassist Zach Valentine told me that taking second place was a blessing in disguise: "We weren't ready then, but we're here now at the perfect time." Since then, lead singer Salvatore Geloso and the crew have traveled beyond their New Orleans home, playing festivals across the country, with new music on the horizon.

While not born in New Orleans, Geloso embodies the city's spirit through and through, and the life highlights and lowlights he writes about have been mostly experienced in the place he's called home for over 18 years. There are many familiar Louisiana sounds in the band's music. "Down in New Orleans" feels like Fat Tuesday on Bourbon Street, but they don't just lean on tradition. Sally Baby's Silver Dollars is inherently funky and timeless, which is why the band has quickly gone from busking and playing tiny dives to doing its thing behind the Tiny Desk.

In this new era of indie rock, yeule has become a leading voice. With a beautifully moody catalog of gauzy, sometimes sludgy songs that roar while drifting through the ether, they got swept up in the shoegaze revival. But even as they have embraced more pop sensibilities, yeule's sound has remained spectral and enigmatic, washed out in a vast sea of reverb and noise.

But yeule strips away much of that for this Tiny Desk performance, captured in our sunlit office on a bright autumn afternoon. The drums are softened with towels on the heads and, while the guitars still get loud and fuzzy, yeule's voice is out front and entirely unaffected or processed with the kind of studio effects fans are used to.

Backed by their band, yeule opens with two relatively bright and shimmery cuts, "Dudu" and "VV," both from Evangelic Girl is a Gun, before shifting gears for the guitar-heavy "dazies" from 2023's softscars. They close with "sulky baby," featuring yeule on bowed guitar.

Guitarricadelafuente's melodies are seismic. Etched together with electronic beats, ethereal guitar, symphonic accents and sometimes zanfona — the hurdy-gurdy native to Spain — the heart-thumping effect is distinct and unavoidable: You are transported to a club in Barcelona or a beach on Costa Brava.

This unique sound is both captivating and easy to lose yourself in. It booms with energy, but Álvaro Lafuente's calming voice and steady rhythms feel like a lullaby with a fiesta tilt. At the Tiny Desk, both things remain true, as piano softens and guitars strum with insistence. As a result, the world quiets and chests expand — rocking back and forth to the sound of Guitarricadelafuente's Spanish summers and sun–kissed heartbreak.

For his Tiny Desk, John Fogerty brought what means the most to him. Family was accounted for: his sons, Tyler and Shane, played in the band, while his wife, Julie, was in the audience. There, too, was Fogerty's distinct brand of patriotism.

We filmed this concert on Nov. 11, 2025, which happened to be Veterans Day. Fogerty tells the crowd that he was inspired to write "Proud Mary" on the day he received his honorable discharge from the Army Reserve in 1968. "I opened my discharge [papers] up, and I was really, really, really happy," he says. "I went right in the house, picked up my Rickenbacker guitar and started strumming, and the very first line that came out of me was, 'Left a good job in the city. Workin' for the man every night and day.' "

The Grammy Award-winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee has also spoken candidly about what his songs mean to him. For decades, Fogerty has fought over his catalog as the primary songwriter for Creedence Clearwater Revival, which includes many songs that are considered rock and roll staples. In 2023, he acquired the majority stake of CCR's publishing, ultimately ending the battle. At the Desk, he plays some of his solo work, then closes the set with "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" with some help from the audience.

As soon as Coco Jones stepped behind the Desk, donning a beautiful silver dress and a bright, warm smile, it was apparent that we were about to witness a star shine. The singer-songwriter has received flowers from the likes of Beyoncé, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Babyface. So expectations were high for Jones to display exactly why she is a standout amongst a new generation of R&B artists — and she does not disappoint.

Jones wields her voice to reveal her power, range and control. She sets the tone with the beautiful ballad “You,” which flows right into "Double Back" and a handful of fan favorites from her debut studio album, Why Not More? And just as Jones and her band have you on the edge of your seat craving more, she welcomes The String Queens trio, which adds yet another luscious layer to the hypnotic pocket of “Here We Go (Uh Oh).” The concert concludes with Jones’ emotionally raw breakout hit, “ICU,” a moment that seals the deal on Jones’ undeniable star power.
