A small room at the top of Hollywood’s historic Paramount Recording Studios is serving as a salon for Victoria Monét as she and a stylist put the finishing touches on her hair. She’s preparing to sit down with Kelly Rowland, and she’s pretty nervous. Meeting a role model can do that to a person.

When Destiny’s Child released The Writing’s on the Wall in 1997, Monét was about 10 years old, and Rowland about 18. Like many Black girls at the turn of the century (and today), Victoria loved Destiny’s Child. She says when she saw Rowland on that album cover — brown-skinned like her, in a gleaming halter top, standing proudly with her bandmates Beyoncé, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson — she saw someone she could look up to.

Back then, Destiny’s Child often worked out of this very studio. Rowland, 42, makes herself at home when she arrives, and Monét, 34, goes over to deliver some roses that she brought. Rowland receives her with a warm embrace and offers Monét a chance to get in on the salad order she’s placing, in the love language of food.

Monét’s butterflies seem to float away as the two take photos together. They listen to each other keenly as they talk about their kids. Rowland has two sons, Titan, nine, and Noah, two; Monét’s daughter, Hazel, is a month younger than Noah. At one point, Rowland reveals that she and Noah shared a special moment to “We Might Even Be Falling in Love,” a soulful interlude from Monét’s 2020 EP, Jaguar, that became part of a popular social media challenge.

The two artists find other points of connection in their conversation, some unexpected and emotional. Soon, both of them are dabbing away tears as they reflect on music and family.

Atlanta's storied Stankonia Studios feel like the site of a family reunion as J.I.D walks in with a grin and daps up Big Boi with Stevie Wonder’s “As” spilling from the speakers. Both are soft-spoken, and you can barely hear what they say to each other as they exchange greetings. But it’s a safe guess that they’re taking a moment to show respect for each other’s approach to life and their shared craft.

Fifty years after hip-hop began in the Bronx, both of these Atlanta rappers have done their part to expand the definition of the genre. Start in 1994, when Big Boi and André 3000 created a bible for Southern hip-hop with Outkast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, written in the basement studio they called the Dungeon and recorded right here. Or flash forward to last year, when J.I.D recorded parts of his most recent, and most personal, offering, The Forever Story, in these same studios. Big Boi helped establish that Atlanta can never be left out of the conversation, and J.I.D has helped maintain the standard he set.

With the cameras on and lights up, they settle into a languid Southern rhythm. Much like their rhymes, their conversation feels like a late-summer evening full of lightning — bright flashes that illuminate everything in sight, unpredictable yet direct. Big Boi, 48, cracks a joke that sends J.I.D, 33, into a fit of laughter. J.I.D fires something back that brings a large smile to Big Boi’s face.

Big Boi reminds us that this isn’t the first time Rolling Stone has asked him to take part in Musicians on Musicians — it’s just the first time he had someone in mind who he wanted to sit down with. This time, when the ask came in, he knew. He snaps his fingers as he recalls how he replied: “I told them, ‘Get me my dawg, man.’”

Swizz Beatz, the Bronx-bred superproducer turned art collector, and Rema, the upstart Nigerian artist who’s become a global superstar, are sitting in one of the larger rooms at the Record Plant in Hollywood. This is the type of place where Swizz, 45, has worked since he was a teenager, and into which the 23-year-old Rema has scarcely ventured. Right now, though, the topic isn’t music — it’s the custom chain around Rema’s neck, a piece inspired by the artwork for his 2022 debut album, Rave & Roses. “It’s one of the best chains I’ve seen in a long time,” Swizz says, as Rema explains that it took three months to design.

Earlier this year, the Selena Gomez-assisted version of Rema’s single “Calm Down” became the first song led by an African artist to stream more than 1 billion times on Spotify, but that almost seems beside the larger point of how thoroughly Rema has penetrated the culture at home and abroad. Swizz has some big numbers on his side, too; two years ago, ASCAP estimated he was responsible for more than 350 million record sales. But again, that barely measures the impact he’s had since he began crafting hits in 1998 as the nephew of the founders of the pioneering rap label Ruff Ryders. An expert controller of chaos, and Alicia Keys’ proud husband of more than a decade, Swizz has made his mark both in and out of hip-hop.

As the pair discuss Rema’s upbringing in Benin City, the conversation drifts back to Rema’s chain, and to the role that visual art, especially those pieces produced with bronze, has played in Nigeria’s history. There are numerous Nigerian masterpieces in museums around the world, Rema points out — especially in Britain, pilfered and never returned.
