Watch Burna Boy play "Gbona", "Wetin Man Go Do", "Dangote" and "Ye" at the Tiny Desk.

Nov. 18, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- While preparing for Burna Boy's Tiny Desk appearance, it was evident early on that his performance would be strictly business. After exchanging pleasantries on the phone with his mother and manager, Bose Ogulu, she made it clear there wouldn't be time for much of anything else. "Burna has been working really hard so please bear with us," she told me. "The band will arrive well before him. Let me know the latest time at which he can arrive."

The Nigerian singer and songwriter is one of the biggest African artists in the world. He's also a pioneer of Afro-fusion which incorporates sonics and influences from a myriad of genres, laid on an Afrobeat foundation. The sound has been inescapable this year. The man born Damini Ogulu has been touring the world for the majority of 2019 and has at least 10 songs in the current nightclub rotation. Beyoncé took notice and offered him a place on The Lion King soundtrack, The Lion King: The Gift.

Sandwiched between two sold-out concerts in Washington D.C., his Tiny Desk performance offers something relatively different from what we're used to seeing at his rowdy stage shows. He's more reflective here and restrained, allowing his songwriting to shine. In the spirit of one of his heroes, Fela Kuti, he weaves through highlights from his breakout album, African Giant, that are liable to move your body as much as your social consciousness.

Chuckie is back for the second season of Noisey’s global rap series ‘Gangsta Rap International’. This time round he’s in Nigeria to meet the most celebrated and controversial rapper – the ‘Marlian President’ – Naira Marley.

Born in Nigeria but raised in Peckham (south London, UK), he was a part of the notorious ‘No Mannaz’ gang who were known for dishing out vicious violence. He was arrested over 124 times.

He turned his life around when he found music and became one of Nigeria’s biggest afrobeats sensations, whose diehard fanbase (known as the ‘Marlians’) worship him like a god.

Amsterdam was easily one of my favorite cities on the Euro tour. The culture is just so dope- beautiful architecture, everybody walking and riding bikes everywhere, tons of great restaurants and bars... it's an energy unlike any other I've felt, and I miss it already. Luckily we can relive some of the memories through this bar-packed follow-up to our first Amsterdam Guerrilla Bars, and trust me, part 2 goes hard af. We're kicking it off with something a little different this time- shout out to the dude working in the record store for immediately being down to mute the house music and let me do my thing. Hope you enjoy this one, and if you do, don't forget to give it a share. Thanks so much y'all ❤️

The inspiration behind this mix came from one of my dearest supporters requesting “I hate u” by Sza to be in the next mix and honestly that was the vibe I was on as well. I created a playlist that I would go to when I felt anxious, depressed, sad, lonely, disrespected and much more. I have always struggled with being able to express myself because I don’t want it to come off like I’m complaining. And when I don’t express myself it eats me up inside. I was able to direct the pain I felt into this mix. Thanks to these beautiful artists and the art they created it got me through tough situations that felt permanent at the time and realized these emotions are only temporary. You learn a lot about yourself in relationships. Spiritual growth was never meant to be easy and it takes hard situations to see where you are mentally and spiritually. I put a lot of time and energy into creating this vibe and the intention of this playlist is to help souls going through hard times to know that ur not alone and the tough times don’t last forever. As much as u love someone, u have to love yourself and put ur mental health first. No one is perfect. We are all just tryna do our best and be happy. You can’t keep waiting for someone to make u happy or treat u the way u deserve to be treated. You have to do that for yourself. I realize relationships are meant to test one to the max. One thing I know for sure is that we have to be patient with each other and not be quick to make someone feel less than for not seeing things the way u do because the majority of the time it’s really just a misunderstanding.
I pray this mix heals every soul that comes across it. Thank you for the endless support and for really being patient with me as well! I only wanna give y’all the best content possible.
