Artists shine given restrictions and limitations. Subtlety and nuance are more easily found in minimalism than excess. That's the beauty of Brushy One String, whose sound is make by one big fat E-string and a voice so rich and full, all it wants is a bit of rhythmic and melodic underpinning.

Brushy One String is from Jamaica, and his "Chicken In The Corn" video has been viewed nearly nine million times. I first came upon his music at globalFEST 2014. He even broke his one string that night, but he smiled and warmed our hearts. He's a deeply spiritual man who tells stories of his musical father and describes how proud his mom and dad would be of his fame if they were around. (He was orphaned at a young age.) He's part Delta Blues with a bit of old-school soul, and he beats a pulse and rhythm on the guitar body that's infectious and simple. That's the beauty of Brushy One String: It's all essence, and everything's essential.

When singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi sings and plays, you can hear the sound move from the Mississippi Delta up to Chicago. As this video shows, she can dispense uptempo dance grooves and coax her voice around the anguished lyric of the blues.

At the same time, guitarist Derek Trucks seems to summon forth the entirety of contemporary music when he slides his bottle neck up and down the fretboard. As you'll see, The Tedeschi Trucks Band functions in the service of a collective vision that celebrates the blues, jazz and so much more.

As a songwriter in Nashville, Chris Stapleton has written hits for Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Darius Rucker. As a singer, he once led the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, and more recently stepped into the solo spotlight with Traveller, his debut album. It's the kind of country record that gets better the more you wear it in: When NPR Music named it one of our favorite albums of the first half of 2015, critic Ann Powers compared it to a "soft denim jacket ... pulled out time after time, lending comfort, suiting every occasion, with treasure stuffed in every pocket."

It's easy to understand why other singers took to his songs — Stapleton writes lyrics that sound classic but never dated — but his softly creaking voice gives them the home they deserve. And even though those songs stand plenty well on their own, it's nice to have a little support. When Stapleton stepped behind the Tiny Desk to play selections from Traveller, he was joined by his wife Morgane on harmony vocals. Between patient, detailed songs of devotion to love, Los Angeles and liquor, they paused for banter about the summer heat in D.C. and the large number of guitars Chris owns ("Not supposed to tell that part," he said to Morgane).

Watch him hide behind a large hat, a beard and a battered vintage guitar; watch her smile at him during "More Of You" with a combination of admiration and affection. Like the songs themselves, their performance is full of private moments worth sharing widely.

T-Pain's fingerprints are all over pop and R&B and hip-hop. He wasn't the first musician to use Auto-Tune as an instrument — he noticed it on a Jennifer Lopez remix, and remembers "Deep" well — but it was, as he says, his style. For a while, in the mid-2000s, he lived at the top of the charts. He dominated that brief moment of our lives when ringtones were a thing. He was celebrated as an innovator, and he happily took his talents where he was invited, which was everywhere.

But somewhere along the way, somebody got it twisted. "People felt like I was using it to sound good," says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. "But I was just using it to sound different.”

He just turned 30, but T-Pain has already done enough to drop a greatest hits album next week. We asked him if he'd grace the Tiny Desk without any embellishment or effects to show what's really made his career: his voice, and those songs.--FRANNIE KELLEY

Serj Tankian, born in Beirut in 1967, and Daron Malakian, born in Los Angeles in 1975 would end up forming a band together. Whilst they had both attended The Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School during their formative years, due to their age difference they didn’t meet until the early 90s, when they would become friends after realising they were working on separate musical projects in the same rehearsal studios.

Malakian on the other hand, was born in America. And whilst his parents emigrated to the US before he was born, he kept a firm grip on his Armenian roots due to his attendance at an Armenian school in the Los Angeles area.

Malakian was introduced to music from an early age and started collecting records when he was just 4 years old. And he once citied The Beatles and Slayer as being two of his favourite bands. With Reign In Blood being his favourite record.

On October 11, 1994, 5 outcasts from Bakersfield, California released one of the most important albums of the 20th century. Their self-titled debut record which was released via independent Los Angeles label Immortal, would come to be seen by many as the birth of Nu-Metal.

Korn would be considered as the pioneers of a genre that dominated tv screens and radio waves for over a decade. A genre that would also give birth to bands such as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Deftones.

From high school drop-outs to born-again Christians, Korn have become an iconic influence in the world of Heavy Metal and this is their story.

Jonathan Davis was born January 18, 1971, in Bakersfield, California. And his childhood would be that of any typically neglected one. His father, Rick Davis, a keyboard player for Frank Zappa, and his mother, Holly Marie, who was an aspiring actress & dancer, both seemed to be more interested in chasing their own dreams of becoming stars on the big stage as opposed to providing a stable environment to raise Jonathan, who also had sister and two other step siblings.

Album Description:

The album was intended as an experiment using musical styles Brubeck discovered abroad while on a United States Department of State sponsored tour of Eurasia, such as when he observed in Turkey a group of street musicians performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 9/8 time, a rare meter for Western music.
