Camila Cabello: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Camila Cabello: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 1 Streams • 4 years ago

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with an "El Tiny" takeover of the (home) concert series, featuring J Balvin, Camila Cabello and several more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

Anamaria Sayre | October 15, 2021
To the beat of her swishing hips and swaying percussionists, Camila Cabello's famous "Half of my heart is in Havana" reverberates across this musician-packed Miami set, with an at-home ease that feels novel for the global popstar.

Born to a Cuban mother and Mexican father in Havana, Cuba, Cabello is no stranger to blending borders and connecting worlds. As the final performance in our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, her El Tiny concert epitomises the cross-cultural, transnational musical identities we've centered over the course of the series. Each unique arrangement of her universal hits represents and explores a new facet of the identities and experiences that make up Cabello.

These stripped-down renditions of her hits "Havana," "Real Friends," "Señorita" and "Don't Go Yet" include more Latin instrumentation than the recordings — presumably bringing them closer to sounds that were first introduced to her as music during her childhood in Havana, Mexico City, and Miami.

The interlude featuring a sacred Afro-Cuban Santería chant and the following performance of the unreleased, Mariachi-based "La Buena Vida," firmly root Cabello's El Tiny performance within two cultural traditions that don't typically glitter under the harsh lights of a global stage.

Here, we find Camila on the precipice of a voice that magically layers pop with tradition, holding all parts of a complex identity in seamless harmony. Flanked by Cuban congueros and Mexican mariachi, all aglow under the Miami sun, Camila Cabello's heart has never felt more whole.

Raphael Saadiq: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Raphael Saadiq: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 4 Streams • 4 years ago

Watch Raphael Saadiq play at the Tiny Desk.

This Tiny Desk concert was part of Tiny Desk Fest, a four-night series of extended concerts performed in front of a live audience and streamed live on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

Dec. 5, 2019 | Rodney Carmichael -- The first time Raphael Saadiq played Tiny Desk, "it was really a tiny desk."

"And honestly we were kinda complaining about it," Saadiq laughs, recalling that performance in 2009, back when hosting intimate little concerts behind Bob Boilen's desk was still a fledgling idea at NPR Music. "Like, we kinda didn't wanna do it," he admits in hindsight. It wasn't until the video-taped version of his set hit the Internet and began picking up views that the lightbulb went off for Saadiq, too. "It's like probably the biggest streaming I ever had, so it's kinda good to be back — not kinda good; it's really good to be back."

As he tells this story, exactly one decade later, Saadiq's return to a slightly bigger Tiny Desk — to close out NPR's live-streamed Tiny Desk Fest — coincides with the biggest record of his career. Named for one of three brothers who succumbed to addiction, Jimmy Lee is his most personal, most vulnerable, most fearless work yet, and it comes at a point, more than 30 years into his career, when Saadiq has nothing left to prove or lose.

This is the same man, after all, who lit the fuse for soul's popular revival as the lead for Tony! Toni! Tone!, at a time when black bands bordered near-extinction. Then he led an entire generation of artists to the well and made them drink. In addition to a solo discography that cakewalks backward through the latter half of 20th-century funk and soul, his production credits read like a score card of black music MVPs over the last 20 years (D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Ledisi, John Legend, Solange). If he's made it look effortless, that's because, sometimes, it has been.

Take the time when he was walking around the East Village in New York one day out of the blue. "I was like, let me see where can I get a joint from," as he recalls during our post-performance conversation. The thought led him to Electric Lady Studios, where D'Angelo had taken up residence while working on his second solo album. "I rung the bell: 'Is D'Angelo here?' He opens the door. He's like, 'What's up!' I said, 'You got a joint?' 'Hell yeah I got a joint.' He's like, 'Can we do a song?' I'm like, 'Yeah, whatever....'"

Needless to say the two already had history together — they'd co-written and co-produced "Lady," D'Angelo's biggest hit until that point — and they were about to make more: "We walk in and we do "Untitled [(How Does It Feel)"] in maybe like two hours," he says.

True to form, Saadiq is still a talent magnet. For his Tiny Desk Fest set — recorded on Halloween, which explains the costumed crowd — he's joined by rising soul singer and songwriter Lucky Daye, who released his Grammy-nominated debut album, Painted, and made his own Tiny Desk debut this year. Daye performs two songs from that album, in addition to backing Saadiq, who also brought along a sousaphone player for his Instant Vintage classic, "Still Ray."

His collaborative performance with Daye is yet another testament to Saadiq's widespread influence, which remains something of an open secret to those in the know. Meanwhile, Jimmy Lee continues to garner Saadiq the kind of attention typically reserved for newer artists. After a career spent contributing so much of his genius behind the scenes and painting over the dark spots in his past with bright, ecstatic strokes, his latest feat feels like a revelation.

"I'm really just shocked about my whole career," he says. "People say Raphael Saadiq is the most slept-on artist. I think I slept on myself, too. I would read this all the time [and] go, 'Slept on? I'm slept on? Cause I ain't Kanye? Cause I ain't talking loud?' Naw, they know."

Indeed, we always have.

The Musical Movement We Don't Talk About Enough
The Musical Movement We Don't Talk About Enough Hotney 2 Streams • 4 years ago

In the late 90s, Questlove helped found a collective of musicians and artists including D'Angelo, James Poyser, J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Common, Bilal, and others like Q Tip, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Pino Palladino.

They were dubbed, somewhat accidentally, the "Soulquarians" and this collection of albums is some of the best music ever recorded and has influenced so much music, in completely other genres since.

Today I'm talking all about the Soulquarians, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, J Dilla, The Roots etc, diving into specifics of their recording process, some of the albums, their influence since, and how all throughout Questlove knew what he had to do to make it big: build a music scene

In regards to the Questlove/D'Angelo/House of Blues story - there are two versions of this story that Questlove has told. They're both the same, but the song is different. One version features Questlove playing the beat from the song "Four" by Madhouse (a Prince side project). The other, more recent telling of the story is Quest playing in the looser Dilla style. That version of the story is told in his recent interview with Talib Kweli: https://youtu.be/r_nmfs-TgGQ?t=3148

That interview also features Questlove talking about the fact that other groups had music scenes around them, and The Roots didn't.

One other correction: Questlove's moniker doesn't trace back to A Tribe Called Quest. Re-reading through his book, I realize I misunderstood the wording.

Dec. 16, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- Many bands make considerable adjustments to their playing style in order for their sound to properly fill the Tiny Desk space. LA-based trio Moonchild, along with three background singers and a drummer, arrived promptly for their load-in time, unpacked their gear and were ready to go within minutes. Aside from being especially efficient, their natural musical instincts made for a custom fit in our corner.

Amber Navran, Max Bryk and Andris Mattson joined forces in 2012 at the University of Southern California and their debut album, Be Free soon followed. This year, they released their fourth album, Little Ghost, intricately meshing jazz, R&B and hip-hop sounds under Amber's subtle vocal feats.

For their set, they pulled out all the stops: flutes, flugelhorns, saxophones, keyboards, ukuleles and some the best harmonies I've heard in recent memory. From the moment Amber walked into the building and throughout the performance, she wore a smile on her face and expressed sincere gratitude for the Tiny Desk platform. She took advantage of the moment and amplified a cause near and dear to her heart. She asked us to "spend our privilege" and do more in the fight for people of color in the United States. They closed with a jam from 2017's Voyager.

Today critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Rita Ora welcomes AD to London for a tour of her extraordinary Victorian-era home. Ora finished furnishing her new place with vintage finds from London’s famous Portobello Road Market - and most of the items she’d already owned and used in previous homes. Her sister and manager, Elena Ora, is responsible for arranging the furniture and interior designer Joanna Plant was brought in to add “little bits and bobs” to tie everything together. As she works on her third album, Ora couldn’t be happier with the calm and grounding home base she’s created. “My exterior self is super flamboyant, colorful, and I’m really proud of the decisions I make. Internally, my interior self is the opposite. I wanted my inner self reflected in my home.”

Rita Ora is an international critically acclaimed singer-songwriter with over 10 billion world-wide streams, four #1 UK singles, and holds the record for the most Top 10 singles for a British female artist in the UK in history with a total of 13. The Story of "Thong Song" by Sisqó
The Story of "Thong Song" by Sisqó Hotney 4 Streams • 4 years ago

The Thong Song was never meant for Sisqo, but once he heard the track he couldn’t let it go. Although it was originally meant for Michael Jackson, producers Tim & Bob were won over by Sisqo's enthusiasm and fresh ideas. VICE met the creators of Thong Song to hear how G-strings and violin strings united to create this iconic song that brought thongs to the masses.

Travis Scott’s full set for Primavera Sound in São Paulo, Brazil. This is Scott’s first time preforming in Brazil and it was an amazing act. The energy of the Brazilians was unmatched. Travis preformed “Don’t Play” for the first time in a while. It was an unbelievable experience.

Lila Iké: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Lila Iké: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 5 Streams • 4 years ago

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Rising reggae star Lila Iké has an all-encompassing vibe, and you can feel it in this Tiny Desk (home) concert. Lila and her crew of musicians outfitted a home in Jamaica for this video, and the layout resembles the Tiny Desk's home in Washington, D.C. I was thrilled to see that Lila performed her hit single "I Spy" for this quarantine concert; it's full of the flair I've been missing the last several months. Lila's vocal agility can bend notes and transcend genres, the kind of voice that makes you want to turn to your friend at a show and say "Is she for real??" On "Solitude," she blends avant-garde R&B with contemporary reggae in a hauntingly elegant song complemented by violinist Sean "Ziah" Roberts. "Thy Will" (which borrows from the iconic reggae rhythm section Sly & Robbie) ends the set with an uptempo banger. I hope these vibes have a lasting effect and provide a tropical respite during the fall and winter months.

SET LIST
"Solitude"
"I Spy"
"Forget Me"
"Thy Will"

LYRICS
Can’t you see you’re not ready
My arms are getting heavy
From the weight of the world

It’s up to me and I’m getting
Sweaty is it too much to hold

A thousand voices
Whisper noise
They plan my fall from grace

Woah oh
I know
Say you want a hero
You don’t
Say you wanna savior
Pull you off the ground
Then you wanna blame me
When you’re falling down

Woah oh
I know
Don’t wanna be your hero
Oh no
When’s it gonna sink in
That we’re sinkin and fallin apart
Cause love don’t last in the dark

Can’t you see you got old
You waited too long and you let time go
Placed your bets when it all comes down
Fold your cards and you blame the house

A thousand voices
Whisper noise
They plan my fall from grace

Woah oh
I know
Say you want a hero
You don’t
Say you wanna savior
Pull you off the ground
Then you wanna blame me
When you’re falling down

Woah oh
I know
Don’t wanna be your hero
Oh no
When’s it gonna sink in
That we’re sinkin and fallin apart
Cause love don’t last in the dark

(Woah oh, Woah oh)
(Love don't last in the dark)
(Woah oh, Woah oh)

Can’t you see you got old
You waited too long and you let time go
Placed your bets when it all comes down
Fold your cards and you blame the house

Woah oh
I know
Say you want a hero
You don’t
Say you wanna savior
Pull you off the ground
Then you wanna blame me
When you’re falling down

Woah oh
I know
Don’t wanna be your hero
Oh no
When’s it gonna sink in
That we’re sinkin and fallin apart
Cause love don’t last in the dark
