Eyewitness to the Death of John Lennon | WABC-TV Special Hotney 17 Streams • 2 years ago

The murder of John Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980, was as devastating as it was shocking. And Eyewitness News covered the murder like no other news source, as it happened in our backyard, to a person who was more than just one of the most famous celebrities on Earth - he was our neighbor.

John Lennon lived at the Dakota, just a few blocks from our studio. Employees of Channel 7 considered him a friendly face they'd wave to -- he, Yoko, and their young son, Sean, would shop in the same shops and go for walks on the same streets. At least one ABC employee, Geraldo Rivera, was a close friend of the Lennons.

Our special "Eyewitness to the Death of John Lennon," hosted by Bill Ritter, interviews the big players in that story, both in front of the camera -- Geraldo Rivera, Ernie Anastos, John Johnson, Doug Johnson -- to those behind the scenes.

Indeed, we've perhaps never been more of an "Eyewitness" to a story - a Channel 7 producer, Alan Weiss, happened to be at Roosevelt Hospital after a motorcycle-riding injury when the mortally wounded former Beatle was carried in.

Having witnessed the fight to save Lennon, Alan managed to call the news into the WABC assignment desk, where the scanner was blaring about a shooting at the Dakota.

Soon, Weiss' news tip would reach Howard Cosell, who would break the news to the nation on ABC's Monday Night Football -- but not before debating whether he should.

At Channel 7, the newsroom was a whirlwind as the nightmarish story developed, and Ernie Anastos and Rose Ann Scamardella prepared to go on the air after the game.

The next week that followed, culminating in a historic tribute vigil in Central Park was unlike any other in New York, America -- or the Eyewitness newsroom.

Our John Lennon special tells the story that shook the world from a perspective you've never seen -- as it happened, moment by moment, with rare or just-discovered historical footage, all through the eyes of Eyewitness News.

"Eyewitness to the Death of John Lennon" is NOW STREAMING on ABC7's streaming apps on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV. To stream, search "ABC7 New York" in the app store.

Lyrics:
I got a soul for sale
Meet me in the parking lot
You can have it for a bargain
I just wanna play guitar and
Make enough to keep some foreigns
In my thirteen-car garage
I got a soul for sale
Just sitting here collecting dust
Heard the devil’d make an offer
All I gotta do is holler
I been thinking ‘bout calling that mother fucker up and saying

Yo yo come on
HARDY wants some brand new foreigns for his new collection
(Damn)
But me I want the cross from the resurrection
(Jesus)
(Yeah you do)
So I can clone the one and only man himself
(Jesus)
The second coming
(Come on)
To help us all get out this Hell
(Please help us)
Never mind those bitches
(Bitches)
You been fuckin’ with this
(Bitches)
Your constitution on some lame ass business shit or is it
(Or is it)
You’ll go to find that diamond
(Find that diamond)
On point with epic timin’
(Epic timin’)
Well look no further D I got that country Bizkit rhymin’

I got a soul for sale
Meet me in the parking lot
You can have it for a bargain
I just wanna play guitar and
Make enough to keep some foreigns
In my thirteen-car garage
I got a soul for sale
Just sitting here collecting dust
Heard the devil’d make an offer
All I gotta do is holler
I been thinking ‘bout calling that mother fucker up and saying

I’m ready for the weekdays to turn into the weekends
Never know what day it is
Singin’ songs to my friends on a Sunday
Sippin’ spiked lemonade until the morning on Monday
Whatever it takes to be free and have this melody feed my entire family
Just sign a mother fucker up and do it ASAP
I’ll put my blood on the line so we can call it a wrap
‘Cause I

I got a soul for sale
Meet me in the parking lot
You can have it for a bargain
I just wanna play guitar and
Make enough to keep some foreigns
In my thirteen-car garage
I got a soul for sale
Just sitting here collecting dust
Heard the devil’d make an offer
All I gotta do is holler
I been thinking ‘bout calling that mother fucker up and saying

I don’t know what gives
I don’t know what gives
I can’t sit here waiting fading anymore

I got a soul for sale
Meet me in the parking lot
You can have it for a bargain
I just wanna play guitar and
Make enough to keep some foreigns
In my thirteen-car garage, yeah
I got a soul for sale
Sitting here collecting dust
Heard the devil’d make an offer
All I gotta do is holler
I been thinking ‘bout calling that mother fucker up and saying
YEAHHH

Lyrics

I don’t know
if I’m conscious enough to feel the end of the rope
Emotionally devoid, incapable of hope
I don’t know
I don’t know
I’ve been watching the water creep in through the door
As deep as my misery, it covers the floor
So I just float here
Timeless
I am restored
Shedding the skin
You swore I once wore
I now know

So leave on a light
Hide your dark inside
Though it takes hold
Leaves you wide-eyed,
Aren’t you tired of feeling lost? (What if I, what if I burn)
Forced to breathe you in
My carcinogen
As we’re made, we leave with nothing
One fragile moment for us
(What if I, what if I burn)

Burn into nothing
We change our form
As ash I watch us fall
I watch us…

Fall into their arms
(And without your light I find)
We’re washed clean of our past
(I’m the fortunate one, that this darkness is better than lies)

I’ve been sitting on a throne
That was forged of their bones
So desperately fearful of being alone
I’d rather rule their corpses
Devoid of a soul
Than be screaming
In darkness
Turning to stone
I don’t know
If I burn
Does it show you the damn that I’m worth?
Cos’ as far as I see
It makes no difference

It makes no difference
So leave on a light
Hide your dark inside
I know it takes hold
Leaves you wide-eyed,
Aren’t you tired of feeling lost? (What if I, what if I burn)
Forced to breathe you in
My carcinogen
As we’re made, we leave with nothing
One fragile moment for us
(What if I, what if I)

Fall into their arms
(What if I, what if I burn)
And we’re washed clean of our past
(What if I, what if I)
Fall into their arms
(What if I, what if I burn)
And we’re washed clean of our past
I’m the fortunate one, that this darkness is better than lies

►Lyrics:
This is survivor's guilt
Seven years I'm eight down in ‘23
I would have gone with them if it was up to me
A sand empire is what I've built, now I'm stuck here with survivor's guilt

We used to cut lines together
So we'd have a story to tell
It's not like I did any better
Just dodged a bullet from hell

I'm not sleeping
They're all leaving
I'm still bleeding
I'm still screaming

Guilt, guilt, guilt tied around your neck
Covered up so you won't forget
That you wasted the best of your days
It was all just for nothing
Guilt, guilt, guilt, yeah, you’re on your own
A rent-free nightmare in your bones
Beautiful people are taken
Open your eyes
We remember our own
Two fingers pressed against my neck
I wish I could just trust my friends
Instead I'm such a wasted space, my God it never ends

It’s too damn bad
I can’t get enough blood on my hands
I think I made it up, I’m going mad
Another empire that I built
I guess this is survivor's guilt

Guilt, guilt, guilt tied around your neck
Covered up so you won't forget
That you wasted the best of your days
It was all just for nothing
Guilt, guilt, guilt, yeah, you’re on your own
A rent-free nightmare in your bones
Beautiful people are taken
Open your eyes
We remember our own

We got it all but we’re stuck in the trenches,
Crying for help but it’s just two feet deep
Losing limbs might be part of the process, what happens next is a choice that ain’t cheap
When we all go extinct
Don't remember our names
Cause we closed our eyes
Let life pass us by
We carry the blame

Guilt, guilt tied around your neck
Was it all just for nothing
Was it all just for nothing
Guilt, guilt tied around your neck
Was it all just for nothing
It was all just for nothing
