Few 80s popstars were as eye-catching as Adam Ant. The dazzling calvary jacket, the eyeliner framing ice-blue eyes, the white warrior stripe applied just north of his nose. It's an image that defined MTV as much as Duran Duran’s yacht, A-Ha’s pencil outlines or Dire Straits’ blocky capitalists. But unlike their music television brethren, Adam Ant survived punk batterings, bandmate betrayal and press indifference to realise the marketing power of adding vibrant vision to his band’s pummelling pop sound. This is New British Canon, and this is the story of “Kings of The Wild Frontier”.

Weezer were a revelation for 90s alternative rock. Heavy metal and comic books were how Rivers Cuomo was raised. Kiss and the X-Men were the Gods that he praised. And while Kurt Cobain also loved 70s Arena Rock and Marvel Comics, he never admitted to it in song. Devo and They Might Be Giants had set the groundwork, but Weezer proved definitively that nerds could indeed rock. As well as saving the hair metal guitar solo from obsolescence, on the band’s first album Cuomo wove tales of unravelling mental health, absent fathers and romances never attempted, told through the lens of personal minutiae and pop cultural obsession. Intimate and arena rock in equal measures, this is the story of how Weezer made The Blue Album.

Tears For Fears didn’t quite fit in. Not style conscious enough to be New Romantic but too Smash Hits to be the next Joy Division. Not quite a synth-pop band, more a pop band that used synthesisers. Before U2 took over, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were briefly the biggest band in the world, claiming two US Billboard number ones with a shuddering sonic maelstrom questioning authority and a slice of Cold War paranoia with the vibe of “The Boys of Summer”. But before that they were the po-faced therapy boys, drowning their sorrow and dancing to the sound of their own childhood trauma. This is New British Canon, and this is the story of “Mad World”.

Compared to the drum-machine euphoria of dance music in 1989, Soul II Soul stood apart. Britain was getting sweaty in make-shift raves, with Euro producers snagging Disco samples to voice their four-to-the-floor 120 BPM party-starters. Meanwhile a loose collective of London-based DJs, dancers, singers and the occasional musician slowed it down, added doses of soulful groove and positive thinking, and changed the face of British music. The arrogance at the time of calling their debut Club Classics Vol. One has dimmed in the face of what we know now, its seismic cultural impact with songs that still ignite dancefloors today. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)”.

Lyrics
Echos flow, bury me
Sharpen your knife upon the stone
Cover me up before you go, so delicate the orchids grow
Buried under melted snow
So I call out your name and let it die slow
I pray that the rain will wash me up, so obvious I can’t let go
Carried in the ebb and flow
So cover up the well and leave
A gift to summon the spring
Imitation of a perfect soul
I shine a light into a thousand eyes all watching, waiting
Echos flow
Deafening
Calling up
Bury me
A fortress of eyes and gnashing teeth
In judgment they’re staring back at me
So obvious I can’t let go of where you buried me
So cover up the well and leave
A gift to summon the spring
Imitation of a perfect soul
I shine a light into a thousand eyes all watching, waiting
Echos flow
Deafening
Calling up
Bury me
So cover up the well and leave
A gift to summon the spring
Imitation of a perfect soul
I shine a light into a thousand eyes all watching (waiting)
Wait for me (echos flow)
A gift to summon the spring (deafening)
Imitation of a perfect soul (calling up)
I shine a light into a thousand eyes all watching, waiting (bury me)
My dreams are just a fantasy
And that is all they’ll ever be
I turn the lights out on a thousand eyes all watching, waiting

LYRICS
As much as I could, as much as I tried
I just couldn’t seem to find the light
The trees for the wood, the wars left and right
Umbrellas with the rain in
I turn on the news, the news has turned off
All the people that the world forgot
The blues get the blues, but the view from the top
Is the ocean in a drop
Whatever happens to
Everything that we go through
I see you got your new tattoo
I didn’t know someone felt that way too
Maybe we could share the rain
Maybe we could dance again
Maybe we could make the sky turn blue
Oh Daniel
knows how to make a dream
How to make a dream come true
Oh Daniel
Could I be the one for you?
Whatever happens to
Everything that we go through
I see you got your new tattoo
I didn’t know someone felt that way too
Maybe we could dance again
Maybe we could share the pain
Maybe we could make the sky turn blue
Oh Daniel
knows how to make a dream
How to make a dream come true
Oh Daniel
Could I be the one for you?

History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. This eventually led to him catching the attention of Mac Dre, and FAB's debut album "Son of a Pimp" dropped on Thizz Entertainment. This conversation about FAB's early career is like a history of Bay Area rap in itself, touching on artists like Andre Nickatina, The Jacka, Souls of Mischief, Too Short, Messy Marv, and many more.

A brand new version of Woodstock 1969. Remade, re-edited and remastered in 4K. This new version is superior to the old in every way. To start with, I used the audio from the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Edition CD release which has been remastered by Prof. Stoned. It's a lot better sounding than the old version. On the old edit, I stretched the audio around to fit the footage which would do the job of syncing the audio, but would hurt the overall quality. This time around, I have left the audio untouched to remain at the correct speed for the whole show while still keeping the quality. For the black and white footage, I have used AI upscaling and frame interpolation to greatly improve the quality and bring the footage up to a smooth 60fps. I think it looks way better.
For the various proshots, I've ripped the Blu-ray versions whenever available rather than the DVD's for a huge upgrade in quality. The DVD versions not only ran at the wrong speed making the songs too fast, but also suffered from a ghosting effect because the footage was being played back at 29.97fps instead of the intended 23.97fps. Now with the Blu-ray versions, I can let the footage play at the correct speed and in its original frame rate of 23.97fps. The only footage from a DVD source is the extra footage used on My Generation because that particular version was only ever released on the "Woodstock Diaries" DVD in 2002. Everything else is from the Blu-ray releases of "The Kids Are Alright" and "Woodstock" the film and bonus features.
Like last time, I've added in a countdown timer whenever there wasn't any footage available. Since the camera mixing on every version of Woodstock isn't that good (incorrect shot and cameras being out of sync) I had to cut up every single camera shot individually on all the different versions and one by one correctly resyncing them all to the new remastered audio. The only song with no footage is Shakin' All Over. For the black and white footage, it would play back at various speeds throughout making it quite a challenge to get it all synced up properly but I think it's pretty much spot on now.
I have fixed the beginning of Heaven & Hell which now includes more footage of the intro than the old edit. I added in a new bit of footage on Sparks at (15:10) of Roger banging his tambourines together which wasn't in the original edit. Removed a section of incorrect John footage which is now in the correct place at (29:51) on the left side. On We're Not Gonna Take It, the first bit of footage was in the wrong spot, I found the correct section just a little bit later at (41:36) and put it side by side with the other cam. See Me Feel Me has quite a few differences in the overall edit of the cameras. This new edit is a little more cleaned up with a few extra bits of footage added in and one incorrect shot removed that I replaced with another angle. My Generation has a couple very small extra shots added in and for Pete's solo at the end of the show, I opted for just 2 cameras this time instead of the 3 on the old edit. Now its only the footage from the Blu-ray for a more cohesive edit.
There are two main things missing from this video. The proshot footage of Summertime Blues from the "Woodstock" Movie and the black and white footage of Sparks, Pinball Wizard and See Me Feel Me. For Summertime Blues, YouTube just simply won't let me upload this video with it included. It gets blocked every time. However YouTube doesn't seem to care when it's used in its own separate video. So I actually made a re-edit of Summertime Blues, removing the incorrect shots and syncing it all up better with the remastered audio. You can watch that here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS9e-pEUO6c
As for the extra black and white footage I couldn't include because of the proshot footage used in its place, I've uploaded that as it's own separate video also. One of the best things about this footage is you can actually see Pete kick the director of the Woodstock film, Michael Wadleigh off the stage as he was filming a little too close for Pete's liking during Sparks. It happens at (18:14) on this video, but the cameras don't really catch much of it. I used AI upscaling and frame interpolated on this too for the best quality. You can watch that here:

Lyrics:
I've been searching, searching for
That take home kind of love
The kind that only comes once in your life
I should’ve known it all along
That I played my cards all wrong
But thank God that I still call you mine
Was too dumb to look in front of me
While I was messing round round
You were holding me down down
I searched the world from A to Z
You were the best one I've found
Without a question
How many times can my heart learn?
This lesson
You made me
You made me
Made me happy
You made me
You made me
Made me happy
Ay, I was playing it, playing it cool
Denied my love for you
Like I got soulmates falling from the sky
You was standing right here all along
Life was too loud to hear your song
Love could really make you blind
Was too dumb to look in front of me
While I was messing round round
You were holding me down, down
I searched the world from A to Z
You were the best one I've found
Without a question
How many times can my heart learn
This lesson
You made me
You made me
Made me happy
You made me
You made me
Made me happy
Was to dumb to look in front of me
While I was messing round, round
You were holding me down
I searched the world from A to Z
You were the best one I've found
Without a question
You make me happy
You make me
Make me happy
You make me
You make me
Make me happy

Lyrics:
I don’t know what a heart like mine
Was doin’ in a love like that, ah
Doin’ in a love so bad
But I know, I know, I know, I know now
I don’t know what a woman like me
Was doin’ with a man like you, ooh
But now I got a love so true
But I know, I know, I know, I know crazy
Now that I found the real thing
You don’t compare
And I don’t care
You’re somebody else’s
And it doesn’t even break my heart
You’re somebody else’s
And I pray for them whoever they are
Everyday with you is rock bottom
Leavin’ you saved me, my God
Look at me blossom
You’re somebody else’s problem
I didn’t know that somethin’ so fake
Could really make it hurt so real, ah
How’d you go and make it feel
Like my fault, my fault, my fault, my fault? Wow
If I could go back in time
I would erase you, ooh
But I could never go back there
I might be wild but I ain’t that crazy
Now that you’re dead to me
I feel so alive
And you’re not mine
You’re somebody else’s
And it doesn’t even break my heart
You’re somebody else’s
And I pray for them whoever they are
Everyday with you is rock bottom
Leavin’ you saved me, my God
Look at me blossom
You’re somebody else’s problem
You’re somebody else’s, woah
You’re somebody else’s
Narcissistic, semi-psychotic
So manipulated I bought it
Every time but not this time
You gaslit my world it was burning
Had to leave before it stopped turning
So happy I could cry
‘Cause you’re not mine
You’re somebody else’s
And it doesn’t even break my heart
You’re somebody else’s
And I pray for them whoever they are
Everyday with you is rock bottom
Leavin’ you saved me, my God
Look at me blossom
You’re somebody else’s problem
