Kittie's journey is a testament to the resilience and determination of a group of young women who defied stereotypes and shattered barriers in the male-dominated world of metal music. Hailing from London, Ontario, Kittie formed in 1996 when drummer Mercedes Lander and guitarist Fallon Bowman, high school acquaintances bonded by a love for heavy music, joined forces. Alongside Mercedes' sister Morgan on vocals and guitarist Tanya Candler, they embarked on a journey that would test their resolve but ultimately establish them as pioneers of female representation in metal.

Despite facing early setbacks and criticism, Kittie persevered, honing their craft in the basement of the Lander family home and refining their sound influenced by bands like Nirvana, Tool, and Silverchair. Their self-titled EP caught the attention of producer Garth Richardson, leading to their debut album "Spit" and a deal with NG Records. However, success came with its own set of challenges. Lineup changes, label disputes, and societal pressures tested the band's resolve. Bassist Tanya Candler's departure due to personal struggles marked a tumultuous period, yet Kittie persisted, recruiting new members and releasing albums like "Oracle" and "Until the End." Despite internal conflicts and industry obstacles, Kittie continued to evolve, exploring heavier sounds and confronting themes of personal and societal struggle in their music.

Their refusal to conform to expectations extended beyond their music. Kittie rejected offers from Calvin Klein and pushed back against attempts to pigeonhole them as a novelty act or feminist icons, instead advocating for equality and authenticity in their art. They faced misogyny and harassment from audiences and media alike but remained steadfast in their commitment to their craft.

As the music industry landscape shifted, Kittie found themselves navigating new challenges. Changing economics and a decline in album sales forced them to adapt, leading to lineup changes and periods of hiatus. However, their influence endured, inspiring a new generation of metal fans and artists.

In 2021, Kittie's resurgence began with offers to perform live shows, coinciding with a resurgence of interest in nu-metal. Signed to Sumerian Records, Kittie embarked on a new chapter, culminating in the release of their first album in over a decade, "Fire." With a renewed sense of purpose and a changing cultural landscape more receptive to their message, Kittie's return signifies not just a comeback but a reaffirmation of their legacy as trailblazers in metal music.

Through adversity and triumph, Kittie's story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the enduring impact of authenticity in art. As they reclaim their place in the metal scene, Kittie's legacy continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide, proving that true metal knows no boundaries of gender or expectation.

The band Type O Negative would mix themes of romance, drugs, depression, and death and would be credited as bringing goth rock to the masses Their third record Bloddy kisses would be their commercial break through and the biggest album of their career. It also made them the biggest band on the then fledging label roadrunner records In today’s video let’s take a look at the history of bloody kisses.
Type O Negative frontman and bassist Peter Steele would be the youngest of six children, raised in a strick catholic household in brookly new york. He would consider himself a burden to his parents He would remark to the dayton daily news that he was taught that everything normal was evil. As he grew up, he distanced himself from religion calling himself a born again pagan. As for his musical influences, he would grow up idolizing the beatles and black sabbath remarking to the associated press “i’ve always loved the beatles. I’ve always loved b lack sabbath. I like the heaviness mixed with a good strong melody.”
As Steele got older he would branch out to like a wider range of bands telling the LA Times he was a fan of droning and, dreamy sounds citing bands like the Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and Dead Can Dance. . ..
A lot of Type O Negative’s music was written from Steele’s point of view growing up as he didn’t have a lot of luck with woman, was emotionally fragile and vulnerable to demons with the imposing frontman telling the LA Times in 1997
“I have gotten my heart broken so many times that I’ve lost count,” “Any time I’ve been involved with someone I’ve cared about, I’ve suffocated them by caring too much. That’s probably why I lost them.”
The imposing Steele would stand 6foot 8 inches tall and weighed t250 pounds with his deep baritone voice, He would refer to himself as the ideal frankenstein but interviewers would describe him as soft spoken, guarded and polite. However, his opinion of himself was pretty low with him referring to himself in interviews as a monster, a psychopath and social expletive.
Steele would tell tbe associated press Some people mistake kindness for stupidity and so now that I’m a scumbag to people I get automatic respect. It’s a very sad place that we live in that the only way to get what you want is by instilling fear into people.” He would remark to howard stern that at one point he was a flower delivery guy and he kept delivering flowers to one women who refused to tip him, so he urinated in the flowers.
It was during the late 70’s Steele played in band’s like Hot Ice and Northern Lights. By 1979 he would play in the band Fallout with future Type O Negative keyboardist Josh Silver. But the heavier sounds of punk which were popular for a few years was being replaced with disco and new wave and Fallout would split. Silver and Steele would part musically with Silver founding the new wave group original sin while Steele would start up the metal group Carnivore. Carnivore would sign to a small label named Roadrunner records who put out a handful of albums before they fell apart. .
Following Carnivore, Steele was initially focused on working for the municipal government, trying to become a cop but life had other things in mind. Future type o negative drummer Sal Abruscato who had worked with Steele at a blacksmith shop heard about Carnivore’s breakup and went over to talk to his friend about working on some new music telling loudersound His father answered the door and let me down, and there’s Peter sitting in bed watching TV, having just cut all his hair off! He had just took the New York Police Department test; he didn’t want to play music anymore. I asked if he wanted to hang out and jam, have some fun. He nods, saying he’s always wanted to have a band with electronica – keyboards, samples and things like that. I’m like, ‘Yeah, cool man!’ just saying anything so I could play with the guy!”

In today’s video we’re going to take a look at several bands and even genres of music rock legend Jimi Hendrix didn’t count himself a fan of.

Jimi Hendrix didn’t hide his feelings about one of rock n’ roll’s most prolific and controversial band’s Led Zeppelin. The musician thought that the high praise of Zeppelin wasn’t warranted given that in his and many people’s opinion, they weren’t very original. Even to this day, led Zeppelin has been frequently accused of stealing music from other artists without properly crediting them - you might remember the .

Vanilla Fude drummer Carmine Appce would recall in a 2006 interview a conversation he had with jimi hendrix, recalling“Jimi Hendrix personally told me that he didn’t like Zeppelin because they were like excess baggage and that they stole from everybody. ‘You Shook Me’ was on Jeff Beck’s record. ‘Dazed and Confused’ has a bit of Vanilla Fudge on it and it has parts of ‘Beck’s Bolero’ in it. I think I was told by a member of the band that the ‘Good Times Bad Times’ riff came from Tim Bogart’s bass line.”

Despite Hendrix criticizing Led Zeppelin he would praise drummer John Bonham with Zeppelin’s frotman Robert Plant recalling “I remember Hendrix coming up to Bonzo at a club in New York,” “And in those days everybody used to jam. It was a place called Steve Paul’s Scene. It was Buddy Miles and Hendrix and [Jeff] Beck. There was loads of us. Me, Rod Stewart, people all over the place.”

He added: “[Hendrix] came up to Bonzo and he said, ‘You know what? You got a foot like a rabbit.’ Hendrix would however praise Jimmy pae calling him a great guitarist, but the pair never got a chance to jam together with Jimmy Page telling an interviewer “I never saw him play, either. I’m really, really upset with myself for never seeing him. I really wanted to hear him.”

Pink Floyd

It maybe surprising given that Hendrix and Pink Floyd’s music were often lumped in together as being psychedelic rock, but Hendrix didn’t count himself a fan of Pink Floyd’s music, at least initially. The jimi hendrix experience would tour with pink floyd in the UK as part of a package tour in 1967.

However, it seemed like his opinion of the band would change over time. The 2012 book Hendrix on Hendrix which contains an extensive collection of his interviews, including some obscure one’s see’s the musician asked in January of 1967 about the up and coming psychedelic scene. He would respond

“When these cats say, ‘Look at the band — they’re playing psychedelic music!’ and all they’re really doing is flashing lights and playing ‘Johnny B. Goode’ with the wrong chords … it’s terrible.” The interviewer would ask Henrix if he saw pink floyd play and he’d respond
“I’ve heard they have beautiful lights but they don’t sound like nothing,” He would stress in a separate interview he didn’t want to be lumped in with what the press labeled as psychedelic or hippie music adding “It bothers us because ‘psychedelic’ only means mind-expansion anyway, “I can’t hear one single word the Pink Floyd are saying,”

Fast forward a few years years later to the summer of 1970, a month or so before Hendrix’s death, He gave an interview where he seemed to change his tune on pink floyd telling melody maker about the future of his music reveaing

“With the music, we will paint pictures of earth and space, so that the listener can be taken somewhere,” adding “People like you to blow their minds,”But we are going to give them something that will blow their mind […]. It will be druggy music. I agree it could be something on similar lines to what Pink Floyd are tackling. They don’t know it, but people like Pink Floyd are the mad scientists of this day and age.”

Why Critics hated Lenny Kravitz music.

Rockstar Lenny Kravitz has had a pretty impressive career staying relevant for nearly 4 decades and selling over 50 million albums worldwide. He’s also branched out into hollywood, appearing in blockbuster films and honestly he looks incredible for his age, given he’s in an industry where alcohol and drugs frequently take their toll. But it wasn’t an easy road for the musician who had to fight tooth and nail to be taken seriously, Not only that but, being mixed race the media, which loves to label people, didn’t know what to ake of him. In todays video, let’s talk about why critics didn’t count themselves a fan of lenny kravitz early in his career

Growing up in both los angeles and new york, Kravitz by the age of 10 was already playing guitar and writing his own songs. His mother Roxie Roker was on the tv show the Jeffersons, while his father Sy Kravitz was an executive at cbs. He would be mixed racee - being half black and half jewish. He would learn classical music and would perform wit hthe california boys choir and even recorded with Zubin Mehta. HBut by the time he attended beverly hills highschool - which was also attended by future guns n’ roses guitarist Slash, actress Gina Gershon and actor Nicolas Cage, Kravitz initially had aspirations of being a session musician, but by the time he graduated from high school he realized he he wanted to become a star in his own right and not go to college. Kravitz’s father agreed to support his son’s aspirations and took the money he set aside for his college fund to book studio time to do some recordings. It was early in his career, Kravitz used the moniker Romeo Blue. Kravitz was a fan of using vintage recording equipment and real instruments in the studio.

It was between the time he graduated high school and the late 80’s Kravitz got numerous offers from record labels, turning all but one of them down. He would tell the kansas city star “they wanted trendy black music, which i hate. They’d say ‘this is too white. You have to get your black base first. Then you can cross over. They want everyone black to get a drum machine and make a funk record. That was a big issue. What i’m doing is black music anyway. Rhythm and blues, rock and roll.” Kravitz would end up signing a deal with virgin records.

In 85 Kravitz would meet his future first wife, Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet, and the two would eventually get married having a daughter, Zoe. . Kravitz would tell the associated press how crazy the media attention was before he even released his first record recalling “being that i was married to her, people were interested in what i was doing. I was on the cover of all these magazines, just because i was married to her. Who is this guy? Adding what if i came to see you because your wife is so and so. If that’s what brings people out, fine. But I’ve got something to say. I’m not interested in being mr. bonet.“”.

It was in 1989 Kravitz released his debut album Let Love Rule, with Kravitz producing the work, writing all the songs, playing almost all the instruments and bonet co-writing two songs. It was at the urging of his label, he dropped the name romeo blue and went back to lenny kravitz. The album was a hit in american and overseas. Kravitz would cite john lennon, bob marley, lou reed and jimi hendrix as the main influences on his debut record. Kravitz would tell the kansas city star “i’m not hip to the way records sound today. All this digital , But some critics didn’t call themselves a fan, with some being especially hard.

One frequent criticism was thatlet love rule was too derivative of 60’s pop, funk and soul, Kravitz wore his influences too much and that he sounded too much like elvis costello
The boston globe would write in 1989 “if you’ve heard anything at all about lenny kravitz, you’ve probably heard he’s tv star lisa bonet’s husband. But kravitz is also a singer/songwriter bandlateder with a just released virgin debut record ‘Let Love Rule’ and when it comes to an artist in his own right, well…he’s lisa bonet’s husband. Ouch..” …adding “There is however one problem. Lenny Kravitz is terrible…He couldn’t sing his way out of a paperbag…” they would add his lyrics are quite trite and that onstage he has a self important attitude.

The Traveling Wilburys, formed by chance, are considered one of the most talented supergroups ever. The origins trace back to George Harrison's 1987 album, Cloud Nine, produced by Jeff Lynne of ELO. After years away from music, Harrison wanted to record again and invited Lynne to co-produce. During the sessions, Harrison and Lynne discussed forming a band, picking Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison as members.

In early 1988, while having dinner with Lynne and Orbison, Harrison mentioned his need to record a B-side for his third single. Orbison wanted to observe, and Harrison, needing his guitar from Tom Petty's house, invited Petty to join. Dylan, who had a small studio, was also invited. Surprisingly, Dylan answered Harrison's call and offered his studio, not realizing Orbison didn't recognize "Bob" as Bob Dylan. The initial recording session yielded "Handle With Care."

Harrison's label, Warner Brothers, recognized the song's potential and suggested creating an album instead of using it as a B-side. The musicians, who had busy schedules, managed to carve out ten days to record additional songs at Dave Stewart's home studio. They maintained a relaxed atmosphere, contributing equally to the songwriting and production process.

The band's name, The Traveling Wilburys, emerged from a misinterpreted studio term. Harrison initially suggested "The Trembling Wilburys," but Lynne preferred "The Traveling Wilburys." Contrary to later claims that the name had no deeper meaning, another story credits Prince Charles with suggesting the name after seeing Harrison and Lynne perform.

Despite being aware of the supergroup label, the Wilburys aimed to avoid ego clashes. They treated Dylan as an equal, fostering mutual respect, which was crucial to their chemistry. All songs were credited to the Traveling Wilburys, and each member adopted a pseudonym with a fictional family backstory.

Released in October 1988, their debut album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, was a hit, peaking at number 3 on the charts and selling three million copies in the U.S. Singles like "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" performed well, though some radio stations were initially hesitant to play them due to Orbison's voice. The band never toured, partly due to their busy schedules and the difficulty in organizing a tour.

The Traveling Wilburys revitalized the careers of Dylan, Orbison, and Petty. Lynne produced Petty's successful solo album Full Moon Fever, and Dylan's Oh Mercy was critically acclaimed. Tragically, Orbison passed away from a heart attack in December 1988, just weeks after the album's release. His posthumous album, Mystery Girl, featuring the hit "You Got It," was also successful.

The band released a second album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, in 1990, skipping the typical sop****re album pressure. It achieved platinum status despite being less well-received than their debut. The Wilburys never replaced Orbison, and with the passing of Harrison and Petty, Lynne and Dylan remain the surviving members.

In 2007, a retrospective box set was released, achieving significant success, including reaching number 1 in multiple territories. The Traveling Wilburys remain a testament to the serendipitous collaboration of legendary musicians who created timeless music.

With the release of their fourth studio album, 1994’s Superunknown, Soundgarden were on top of the world. In 1994 alone Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden would all have number 1 albums.If you include late 1993, Nirvana had one too with their unplugged record As Soundgarden released their follow up in 1996, Down on the Upside, the band were teetering on imploding. Maybe it wasn’t surprising given that things had changed for the big seattle bands - alice in chains was limping along due to substance abuse, nirvana was done, and Pearl Jam were still embroiledi n their battle with Ticketmaster and still not doing music videos. Soundgarden were coming to terms with their success. In today’s video, let’s talk about why Soundgarden fell apart the first time.
Formed in Seattle in 1984, Soundgarden would blend metal and punk rock resulting in a sludgy sound. In 1987 they released their Screaming Life EP through fledgling Seattle label Sub Pop. They would release 1988’s Ultramega Ok on SST Recorde.. Then Soundgarden became the first major Seattle band from that era to ink a deal with a major label, signing with A&M Records. They released their major label debut in 1989 with Louder Than Love and returned in 1991 with Badmotorfinger, a record still held up as their best work by many fans. It was also by the early 90’s the band cemented their classic lineup with frontman Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Sheppard and drummer Matt Cameron. Though they were hailed as one of the big 4 bands from Seattle and the more experienced their peers - Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains enjoyed success much earlier than they did.
Thayil would tell Revolver "
"I remember the Nirvana guys wanting to be on Sub Pop, saying we were their favorite band," he continues. "The first time I met Kurt Cobain, I told him how much I loved their 'Love Buzz' single, and he said, 'Well, consider yourself our biggest influence.' These were the things that were important to us at the time."
Following the release of their third album 1991’s album Bad Motorfinger, guitarist kim Thayil recalled hearing several songs Chris Cornell had demoed for their follow up superunknown. These songs included spoonman, let me drown and black hole sun. He recalled thinking that there’s probably a few singles amongst those songs. It was at a metallica gig before superunknown came out that the guitarist spoke to metallica’s manager Cliff Bernstein who told him Soundgarden was following the same career path as metallica, telling him their next album would be their breakout hit and he was right. 1994’s Superunknown was massive, selling an impressive six million copies stateside and giving the band some of their most popular songs - black hole sun, spoonman, fell on black days, and The Day I Tried to live.
The tour for superunknown represented the first time the members of Soundgarden would do their own headlining shows with an extensive stage production. Drummer Matt Cameron would tell Greg Prato “For the most part it was pretty fun. Then towards the end of that tour, Kurt Died and i think the whole fabric of the group was starting to unravel a bit.”
Thayil would clarify that at this point in the band’s career, there wasn’t really any interpersonal tensions but rather it was stressful always being on the road and dealing with emotions without their support system especially after Kurt Cobain died adding “it wasn’t fair. We didn’t get to drive and be around our family during that period. We were supposed to be on the road and that’s when it sucked. People dying out the seattle music scene wasn’t supposed ot happen.”
Maybe foreshadowing the upcoming problems the band would face, the last date of the superunknown tour did not go well. Thayil would recall to greg prato Our last show was at memorial stadium in seattle - a really bad show. Chris’ voice was having a really fucked up time. When the show was over he just walked off stage got in a car and took off”

So what does Hoobastank even mean? Well I honestly have no idea. *
That’s because for al ot of interviews the band gave early in their career they told interviewers different answers as to where the name came from. One was that it was a name for someone from california who has a shoe fetish, another was that it was a street name in Germany, while another answer was that it was the middle name of their bass player. My favorite answer was that it was the H in Jesus H Christ. In reality it seemed like the band just came up with the name thinking no one else would have the name.
The group would spend a few months recording their major label debut that was self titled. Estrin would be the principal songwriter first coming up with song ideas telling the buffalo news “i’ll break out all my recording equipment. - my guitars, bass guitars and drum machines and play a riff over and over again. Eventually I’ll create the whole song, record it and i’ll take the tape to rehearsal and show it to the other guys.Doug Robb will take it and try to develop a vocal melody over what im playing and develop lyrics. ” The band would work with Incubus producer Jim Wirt who they credited with having hone their sound and he would also help the band write some songs.
Hoobastank would release their self titled major label debut in November of 2001. The lead single Crawling in the Dark would be their breakthrough hit. The introspective single Crawling was the catalyst that helped kickstart sales of their major label debut record after LA Station KROQ started playing the song. reaching No. 3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 7 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart while also having crossover success peaking at number 68 on the hot 100. .
But Crawling in the Dark wasn’t their most successful song from the album. Their second single Running Away would be the biggest song off the record peaking at number two on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and was a crossover hit peaking at number 44 on the hot 100 chart. The third single Remember Me would peak at number 28 on the mainstream rock tracks chart. The success of the singles helped propel their major label debut album to go platinum. THe press made it seem like the band were an overnight success and riding the coattails of Incubus, Robb would joke that the album was selling so well because it was cheap but would later add that he received a lot of emails from fans who stated “the songs have really reached them in a deeper way than just musically and they can relate to ta lot of the lyrics. “ with the band being credited as being more introspective than it’s peers.
The New York Daily News would publish a story on the band in 2001 “Landing a major label deal is a lot like selling real estate. Both sometimes operate on the same mantra “location, location, location.” Since the members of Hoobastank went to the same high school as members of linkin park and incubus, record labels soon started circling the area like sharks. It wasn’t just Hoobastank who benefited from their association with Incubus and Linkin Park as other local bands including Hot Wire and Vent also got major label deals. Vent would feature Incubus frontman brandon boyd’s younger brother.However, Incubus would probably have the biggest influence on Hoobastank with their frontmen kind of looking similar, Incubus taking Hoobastank out on several tours and with the groups sharing a producer in Jim I
rwin. The New York Daily News profile would use the headline “Hoobastank, At Least The Name is Original,” ouch. But the band chalked up the similarity to hoobastank because they both shared the same influence Mr. Bungle. their guitarist Estrin at one point was even a roadie for Incubus
