Videography refers to the process of capturing moving images on electronic media(e.g., videotape, direct to disk recording, or solid state storage) and even streaming media. The term includes methods of video production and post-production. It could be considered the video equivalent of cinematography (moving images recorded on film stock). The advent of digital video recording in the late 20th century blurred the distinction between videography and cinematography, as in both methods the intermittent mechanism became the same. Nowadays, any video work outside commercial motion picture production could be called videography.

Music is essential to many of our lives. We listen to it when waking up, while in transit, at work, and with our friends. For many, music is like a constant companion. It can bring us joy and motivate us, accompany us through difficult times, and alleviate our worries.
Music is much more than mere entertainment. It has been a feature of every known human society—anthropologists and sociologists have yet to find a single culture throughout the course of human history that has not had music. In fact, many evolutionary psychologists today make the argument that music predated language. Primitive tribes and religious practices have used music to reach enlightened states for thousands of years, and Pythagoras used music to heal different psychological and physical ailments. Currently, cutting-edge scientific research has shown the effect that music has on the brain, the individual, and society.
Not only does music reach us on intellectual, social, and emotional levels, but many describe it as spiritual or mystical. The use of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic devices in music can induce a psychological state in both the musicians and the listener that is beyond words to describe.

Even though we are constantly exposed music in our daily lives, we rarely stop to actually think about what it is. After all, what exactly is music?
Fundamentally, music is a combination of sounds, and sound is vibration. One of the most succinct definitions of music comes from the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni, who said that, “Music is sonorous air.” It's extraordinary to think that a simple vibration unseen by the human eye can facilitate a deeply rich emotional experience, alter perception and consciousness, and induce ecstatic states of being. What is the process by which these sonic vibratory frequencies are heard by the listener, creating a profound psychological experience for them? How does something as fleeting as "sonorous air" have such a healing and therapeutic effect on people? And how does it facilitate personal growth?
In this series, titled "The Power of Music," we will explore these questions in detail by reporting on the latest cutting edge research on music, interviewing musicians, scientists, therapists, and spiritual leaders about their work with music, and digging up ancient texts and musical practices.

Third Eye Blind would be formed in 1993 in San Francisco by frontman Stephan Jenkins. His parents would divorce when he was 7 and as a kid he struggled with dyslexia. In the sixth grade, his teacher told him he would never graduate high school and instead, would likely end up in juvie. He would graduate high school and ended up becoming a straight A student at UC Berkley getting an english literature degree in 1987. Jenkins would start playing in bands in high school first starting out as a drummer.

By 1990 he was living in lower haight in san francisco and had rented out his room so he could live in a closet. Jenkins would survive on a steady diet of ramen and coffee that was financed by money he had stolen from his roomates. He’d of course also write music during this time as well. He would refer to this period in his life as “my 1967, my summer of love.”Prior to third eye blind, Jenkins was part of a rap duo group called Puck and Natty who believe it or not in 1992 got a song called just wanna be your friend on the soundtrack of beverly hills 90210.

Jenkins would receive a payment of about $7,800 for the song appearing on the show. He’d later admit he had never seen the show and used the money to buy groceries..Puck and Natty’s demo tape soon found it’s way to several industry heavyweights including irving azoff and At one point capitol records nearly signed the rapping group. But when questions over who should produce the group got raised in a meeting, Jenkins walked, wanting to take on production duties himself.

It was in 1990 he met another resident who lived on lower Haight area, Eric Godtland. Gotland was working as a management consultant by day and a pretty unsuccessful club DJ by night. He would take jenkins under his wing.

Jenkins would tell Gotland a vision he had of starting a new rock band. He already had a name -- Third Eye Blind. And he already had a handful of songs including the track semi charmed life. Some of the music for the song came from his partner in puck and natty who Jenkins ultimately paid $10K to so he could have 100% ownership over the song. I’m sure that guy is kicking himself for doing such a deal.
Also around this time, Jenkins befriended a waitress who worked down the street who was also writing songs and they would play each other their compositions. He would play her semicharmed life and she would play him a song called what’s going on. That waitress was Linda Perry of the group 4 non blondes. What’s going on would later be renamed what’s up? And she would go on to have an enormous amount of success.

Semi Charmed Life eventually made its way to Randy jackson of american idol fame who liked it, and he took it to don ienner of Sony music who didn’t. He thought jenkins was rambling on the song, and thought, it was too different. Initially Third Eye Blind started out as a songwriting exercise with producers and engineers Jenkins knew, but ultimately he wanted to establish a band.

Jenkins goal from the start was to break free of the constraints of indie rock according to the la times. Jenkins would tell the paper “I didn’t feel like i fit into that whole post grunge-noise pop scene that movement to democratize the form by playing badly.” Third Eye blind’s early inspirations included groups like the beatles and college rockers camper van beethoven in addition to the hip hop group The Sugar Hill Gang,

Jenkins woulplayed with a lot of guitarists before finding Kevin Cadogan who he’d do some two man acoustic shows with around the bay area. They’d eventually add bassist Arion Salazar from East Bay group Fungo Mungo and the band went through nearly half a dozen drummers before finding Brad Hargreaves. Salazar would credit Cadogan as being the missing piece for third eye blind. He’d recall to billboard hearing semi charmed life for the first time revealing He had it with a stripped-down drum machine and electronic bass on the first non-band demo. It was kind of one-dimensional, acoustic guitar troubadour-y first position thing with basic guitar

Tonic would rise out of the ashes of grunge music, which was mostly on it’s way out by the time the group showed up on most people’s radar by the mid 90’s. The group’s 1996 debut album Lemon Parade would be the career high for the group going platinum and producing several big singles including “If you could only see.” But whatever happened to the band? That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video.

Made up of members including vocalist and guitarist Emerson Hart, lead guitarist Jeff Russo, bassist Dan Lavery and drummer Kevin Shepard, Tonic fought against critics their whole careerwho levied two charges against them. 1) that they were too influenced by 70’s rock and 2) since they formed in LA they were image conscious. The band would answer these charges with guitarist Jeff Russo telling the LA Times
“We just focus on writing the best possible songs and then go on stage and give as much of ourselves to the audience as we can,”We don’t think in terms of alternative rock or guitar rock . . . or how many CDs can we sell.
“We just have to be ourselves, and so far, enough people seem to like who we are--or at least what we play,”It’s too bad that some bands have to get arrested or look like Marilyn Manson to attract attention. That’s just not us. Over time, I believe we will stand or fall on the quality of our songs.”

The band’s origins dated back to New Jersey where Russo and Hart first met while attending the same high school - red bank catholic high. Emerson Hart’s mother worked for a local television station while father was a pretty talented singer who suffered from schizophrenia and vanished in 1980. Hart suspects his father was possibly murdered, a subject he discussed on one of his solo records years later. .

Both musicians would head out west to Los Angeles at separate times and would run into each other years later in 1991 at Canter’s Deli. The establishment would hold “jam night” in the restaurant’s Kibitz Room where bands like the Wallflowers and Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash would be seen from time to time.

The pair soon started jamming together, and writing songs, which got the attention of EMI Music who signed the pair to a publishing deal. Soon afterwards they added bassist Dan Rothchild and drummer kevin Shepard.Soon enough, Tonic would be born in 1993. According to MTV Hart named the the group "tonic" after the first note (degree) of any diatonic (e.g., major or minor) scale.

Tonic became regulars for almost half a year at the LA club The Mint where they got the attention of Polydor Records who signed them on Halloween in 1994 backstage at the club. It was during this time the members were working day jobs to support their music with Russo worked as a chef at a restaurant. Hart was a manager at a pool hall and worked at Fender, building guitars while Rothchild worked as a structural engineer. They all hated their day jobs so getting signed was a god-send to them.

The band enlisted producer Joseph Puig who had previously worked with Weezer and No Doubt to work on their debut album. Puig would get a chance to see the band perform the material they had written in a live setting during their regular shows at the Mint. From that point, as Hart remembers, Puig (pwig) helped them to hone in on the distortion heavy sound that they were going to capture in the studio

While Tonic wrapped up recording of LemonParade in 1995, their label let it sit for almost an year. Polydor told the group to go out on the road in order hone their live chops. With Hart telling Diffuser “We were on the road for almost a year before our record came out,” “The label was like, ‘Get in a van, go do crappy gigs for a year and become good artists.’ Because labels used to do that! So by the time, ‘Open Up Your Eyes’ [was released] -- that went to radio in ‘96 and that was our first No. 1 at rock radio -- we were already in shape."

Lemon Parade was by no means an instant seller, but rather a slow burn. According to the VP of marketing at Polydor he would tell billboard “sales always stuck between 1500 to 2400 pieces week in
