Dubbed as a band that played initially moody and a stormy brand of rock music, they were in their early days labeled as the heir to the Los Angeles punk band X as being the City’s official underground band. They would sometimes shed a light on the darker side of los angeles. Concrete Blonde would go from being underground darlings to having mainstream success in just a few short years,. But along the way the band went through a lot of turmoil, - bankruptcy, issues with management and their record label and of course internal problems

The story of the band begins in 1980 when frontwoman Johnette Nepalitano and guitarist James Mankey met while working at songwriter Leon Russell’s studio in Los Angeles. Nepalitano was working as what she calls a gofer secretary person doing errands for the producer. She got the gig after meeting somebody at a party who was doing woodworking at the producer’s studio. A lot of famous people came and went in the studio with Nepalitano admitingt to The Sacramento Bee that she once spent a whole night rolling joints for leon russell and willie nelson.

Nepalitano would be described by Spin as the girl who handed you eyeliner at a Germs show’ and the type of girl who every girl wants to confide in and guys respect. She would joke to the magazine that her bad relationships were made up of boyfriends which could stretch around the block and she should have had ‘lie to me’ tattooed on her.

Nepalitano would grow up in Hollywood .with her father being a poolcleaner for major celebrities including elvis and liberace.. Bella Legosi even babysat her when she was a kid. As she got older her family moved to the valley and at the age of 9 her dad once took a piano as a form of payment for a pool job he gave it to Johnette. In addition to learning piano she soon learned to play guitar and wrote her first song at age 12 for her baby sister. It was an aunt of hers who was working in hollywood as a dancer at the shindig and dating mickey dolenz that peaked her interest in showbusiness. Guitarist James Mankey would play in the 70’s era group Sparks with his brother Earle. He also spent some time as an engineering technician for radio DJ casey kasim on his America’s top 40 program.

After working for Leon Russell for a few years, he soon left LA and headed ot Nashville, but Nepalitano and Mankey didn’t follow him. Instead the pair opted to stay in LA and work on music together at a 16 track recording studio in Thousand Oaks. It would be a local fanzine named DIY that picked up one of their songs named Heart Attack for a compilation LP that was put out in 1982.. At that time the pair of musicians called themselves the Dreamers and they decided to find a bassist and drummer and start playing clubs around LA. They struggled to get much attention initially because they couldn’t be pigeon holed into a particular scene in LA.

Fast forward to 1984 and the pair now playing under the monicker Dream 6 were playing a lot of post punk clubs in LA. The band put out a self titled EP on a french label, which got critical praise and quickly attracted major label attention. The pair soon recorded what would be concrete blonde’s self titled record with their own money costing them about $15K.

But the pair’s friends told them they might want to act sooner rather than later on getting a record label deal, since the opportunity may not present itself again. Well, they did the complete opposite rejecting any label that forced them to compromise on their sound. The band nearly signed with Columbia Records and worked with bangles and fishbone producer David Kahne, but he insisted bringing in outside musicians and he wanted to co-write songs with them, which they said no to. Elektra wanted them to work with big shot producer Michael Wagener but they asked the band do a cover of the Creedance Clearwater Revival song so they said no to elektra. One record label according to the ottawa citizen tried to get the band to sound like motorhead,

The Breeders
In the mid 80’s Kim Deal would join the band Pixies. While she didn’t know how to play bass she would learn the instrument. But several years after joining the group she felt confined, unable to express herself musically. By the late 80’s she’d go form the group The Breeders, while still in Pixies. Today, let’s take a brief look at the band The Breeders.
The story of the breeders begins with identical twin sisters Kim and Kelly Deal. Raised in Dayton Ohio, where they would be exposed to the likes of led zeppelin, the who and aerosmith, but it would be a friend of Kim’s from the west coast that sent her the tapes of bands that would truly influence their future musical creations - Susie and the banshees, sex pistols and elvis costello. Unlike so many rockstars who grow up in broken homes or move around a lot, neither of this happened to the Deal sisters who came from a stable upbringing. Their father was a physicist while their mother worked with children.
The sisters would eventually form a duo and start covering country tunes. Kim would play guitar and sing, while kelley would harmonize. Kim and kelley didn’t strive to become musicians initially, with Kim going to college and getting a 2 year diploma in biology. Kelly meanwhile, would join the military working at a local airforce base. Kim would get married to a man named John Murphy and relocate to boston working at a science lab. It was during this time she saw an ad for the band Pixies who were looking for a bass player, but she didn’t play bass, but she quickly learned. Her sister Kelley almost joined as the drummer, but things wouldn’t work out. Despite being alternative darlings and many, Kim felt underappreciated in Pixies, despite being many people’s favourite member and writing one of the pixies popular tracks gigantic. It was on the tour with Pixies Kim would befriend throwing muses guitarist Tanya Donnelley and they bonded over being creatively stifled within their respective groups. They planted the initial seed of starting a new group together dancing and drinking after a Sugarcubes show in Boston. Deal would tell the LA Times
“I said, ‘Ooh, Tanya, I got a great idea--we need to make a dance song and we’ll be cool and rich. We’ll be disco queens.’ Donnelly would add “We started it and figured out we couldn’t do it for beans. We had no idea what to do. But then Kim had all these songs and we just decided to do that instead.”
Following the release of Pixies hugely influential record 1989’s DooLittle, frontman Black Francis sought to go solo for a little bit giving Kim the perfect opportunity to put together her own band with Donnelley. Calling themselves the breeders, the band would be formed in 1989. The idea for the name came to kim one day who was at a bar and overheard several **** men talking about a straight man who walked into a bar using a derogatory term “breeder”. Enlisting Surfer Rosa producer Steve Albini, the original lineup of the breeders consisted of Tanya Donnelley on guitar, Josephine Wiggs on bass, and Britt Walford on drums. Wiggs who played in the english band perfect disaster had met Kimduring one of Pixies tour of Europe and hit it off. Deal wouldn’t play bass in her new band though, doing vocals and playing guitar because as she told one publication, she was a guitar player at heart. Playing with Pixies, she already had an in with the label 4AD and they soon nabbed a recording contract. It was in 1990 the band put out their first record Pod, which was recorded and mixed the album in 11 days. The album got some traction thanks to their cover of the beatles tune happiness is a warm gun, which got some attention on college radio. Also landing the band on many people’s radar was the fact that nirvana’s kurt cobain was a huge fan of the band listing pod as one of his favourite albums. What’s funny is that a lot of the press reports around the time of Pod coming out painted the Breeders as a side project for Kim, and there’s quite a few publications labelling them a supergroup. Kim definitely didn’t consider the band a side pproject telling a pub

Collective Soul is a band I’ve always always associated with Hootie and the Blowfish and Matchbox Twenty.. All three bands had a number of hits in the 90’s but they never got much respect. Coupled with matchbox twenty, collective soul was sometimes dubbed as a faceless band -a group wiith a bunch of hits. People knew the songs, but couldn’t pick the band members out of a lineup.

Adored by radio, hated by critics Collective Soul would be one of the most successful bands to emerge out of the mid to late 90’s. I want to thank Trevor for suggesting this story. I actually ran into him at work one day and he said Sidd when are you gonna do collective soul, so here it is Trevor. Enjoy.

Early Years

The band’s history begins with the Roland brothers Ed and his younger sibling Dean. Growing up in Stockbridge Georgia, an atlanta suburb, their father was a baptist preacher and the head of the local youth choir. They grew up in a strict conservative household only being allowed to listen to christian humns, elvis and jerry lee lewis. Their father majored in music in college and got involved in some record burnings too before he became the head pastor of the biggest church in town. The boys sundays mostly revolved around the church going to sermon in the morning and then returning in the evening for choir. They’d spend their saturday nights with their mother who played piano and their father rehearsing hymns for the following day’s service.


Ed would tell the LA Times about Stockbrige’s music scene revealing It’s a small place, only about 20,000 people--There’s nowhere to play there, but it’s close enough to Atlanta, which is really a cool place. The music scene is very diverse. There’s the R&B; scene, the Indigo Girls folk scene and a rock scene. Being from Georgia you would expect Roland to have been influencedby the likes of Molly Hatchet and lynyrd skynyrd, but he would admit to earofnewt that his influences weren’t southern rock bands, but california rock - fleetwood mac and the eagles. He’d cite other influences like elton john as well.

Both brothers soon got into guitar playing and following high school Ed moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music and study guitar.. The experience was a culture shock for Ed. He got exposure to artists he had never previously heard of and credited jamming with professional musicians as making him a better guitar player and expanding his musical horizons.

It was after a year he’d return home landing a job at a local 24 track recording studio called Reel 2 Reel which was owned by Will Turpin’s father. It was now the 80’s and he was also playing with two local musicians Shane Evans and Ross Childress in the local act Marching Two Step. The idea for Ed was to get a major recording contract and it was a long time coming. He’d spend nearly 12 years chasing that dream playing clubs in the southeast and recording ideas but nothing seemed to get the attention of record labels.

Marching two step’s time came to an end and Ed was about to give up on his dream of being in a successful band. It was now january of 1993, but the band’s manager pushed him to try his hand at getting a publishing deal whereby he could write songs for other people or score film and television. He’d spend the next 3-4 months coming up with a demo tape. But some of those songs were up to five years old.

Roland would toy around with his own musical ideas while he was off work in the recording studio. Meanwhile, during the day he’d producing, mixing, and engineering local Atlanta artists.

Roland soon had a demo, 90% of which he created himself. The demo would consist of nearly a dozen songs and one of the last songs written would be called Shine. Roland would remark how the song was considerably longer than anything else on the demo.

Heralded as a musician with enormous drive - even though some used that characteristic against her. Sheryl Crow’s success in the 90’s almost didn’t happen. Her debut record sat in limbo, she was and she almost lost her recording contract and despite the success of her debut album, it soon created a media firestorm with some of her early musical collaborators. Today, let’s talk about the career of Sheryl Crow.

Born in Kennett, missouri,population 10,000 Sheryl Crow was a self professed “moody” music geek growing up. wanting to know all the lyrics, and wanting to know who played what part on each album. Her parents were also encouraging getting her piano lessons at the age of 6. Her father, was a lawyer and trumpeter, and her mother, was, a piano teacher and music enthusiast.

Crow would attend university of missouri majoring in music Piano performance with a secondary degree in education. It was following school she joined a cover band where she was the only woman, a group called Cashmere. She would cite her influences growing up as the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart. I’m guessing Led Zeppelin is somewhere in there too. She would land a job as an elementary music teacher in the st. louis public education system by the mid 80’s.. She was making $17,000 a year and got engaged to the guitar player in her band, who was also a born again christian. The plan was that she’d live in Missouri the rest of her life, have a family and live happily ever after but things wouldn’t work out that way. The engagement was broken off after Crow’s fiance told her if she wasn’t going to sing for the lord he couldn’t be with her.

But despite her fiance’s comments, Crow loved playing in bands and didn’t back down. One of her first big breaks would be doing a jingle for a mcdonalds that was only originally supposed to air regionally in and around st. louis. But it soon got picked up nationally. Crowe would admit that for 45 minutes of work she made $42,000.00 which was more than she made after 2 years of teaching. It was at this point she relocated to LA, since she was no longer engaged. thinking that she’d make a career playing music or at least writing jingles. She’d go home on a tuesday and tell her parents she was leaving for la on sunday. She was 24 at the time and had a good amount of determination. She had never been to any other city except St. Louis, so she was obviously overwhelmed by what she saw. She would live by the beach with several friends and one of the first things she did was to get a list of all the studios in LA and a map mapping out all the locations. She’d take her demo tape with her commercials and a few songs to the studios to see if she could get any work.

She soon began questioning her decision to move to LA after going into a studio one day and coming back out and seeing a boot on her car. She had no money to get her car back.

She did what everyone else was doing at the time who came to LA in search of their dreams of becoming famous. She waited tables at a place in the valley a jazz club called Le Cafe. It was a place where lots of well known musicians and industry people frequented. A guy named Les Hooper stopped by the place and he was a commercial producer. Crow gave him her tape, knowing she could fired for doing such a thing, which she was. The next morning she was letgo, but hooper heard the tape and loved it. He helped her get a job doing a national commercial for car maker Toyoto which paid $67,000.00, She was able to get her car back after getting that big cheque.

She soon started getting other work like doing a studio session with johnny mathis and even got a tv part on a show called cop rock - a detective show that was also a musical.It didn’t last very long on the air. I know To give you guys a timeline this was 1990. About a year prior in 1989 she would buy a 4 track recorder and she would do covers of Shaka Khan and Heart while also writing songs on her keyboard and programming drums. Then Crow got her big break. She had gotten word that michael jackson was holding auditions for his bad tour for backup singers and got the gig.
