Tragic Story of Dee Dee Ramone

What’s going on my fellow rock n’ rollers don’t forget to hit the bell notification icon to be notified everytime i upload a new video on my channel. The Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone was only 50 when he died in 2002. He lived a pretty tragic life that was consumed by drugs, alcohol and rock n’ roll. This is his story.

Dee Dee ramone was a founding member, main songwriter as well as the bassist for the hugely influential punk rock group the Ramones. Dee Dee’s struggle with substance abuse was no secret as he would publish an autobiography in the late 90’s and documented his crippling addiction. The story of the ramones is one of great tragedy as dee dee would die within almost a year of when Ramone’s frontman joey ramone passed at the age of 49 from cancer.

Originally named Douglas Glenn Coven, Dee Dee was born in 1951 in Fort Lee Virginia. His father was in the military and his mother was a German a women. Given his Father’s profession he moved around a lot and Dee Dee by his own admission claimed his childhood was “lonely”. When he was an infant his family relocate to West Germany where he would stay until he was the age of 15. His father would struggle with alcohol and resulted in his parents splitting up. Dee Dee, his mother and sister would move back to the States finding a new home in Forest Hills, New York. It was in Forrest Hills he met two other guys named John Cummings and Thomas Erdelyi (erdalee)later dubbed Johnny and Tommy Ramone, who were playing in a band named Tangerine Puppets After some discussion the trio decided to start their own band. But They would add friend Jeffrey Hymann who was a drummer in another band named Sniper to cement the lineup. They would call themselves the Ramones. They would draw inspiration from the Beatles Paul McCartney who would use the alias Paul Ramon when staying at hotels. Each band member of the band would change their surname to Ramone as an act of solidarity. Douglas Coven would become Dee Dee Ramone, John Cummings would become Johnny Ramone, Thomas Erderly would become Tommy Ramone and Jeffrey Hymen would become Joey Ramone.

It was a struggle at first as the Ramones had revolving cast of members in different positions as Dee Dee originally was the vocalist, while Joey was a drummer. After some maneuvering Joey became the vocalist while Dee Dee would focus on bass as he found singing and playing bass at the same time difficult, but he’d still add vocals on a few Ramones tracks. A year later in 1974 the band made their live debut and soon made a name for themselves on the New York music scene.

Mixing pop with their hard rock influences including the Who, The MC5 and the Stooges they would soon become synonymous with the New York punk rock scene using just three chords to write songs. By 1976 the band released their self titled debut album which included the punk rock anthem Blitzkrieg Pop. Dee Dee would end up being one of the band’s most prolific lyricist and songwriters penning such tracks “poison heart,” “rockaway beach” and 53rd and 3rd that documented his life as a street hustler. Something that would hamper Dee Dee for much of his life starting in his teenage years was drug addiction especially as the musician took a liking to heroin.. In the intro to Dee Dee Ramone’s book Lobotomy, Legs McNeil would write, “Dee Dee was the archetypal f--k-up whose life was a living disaster. He was a male prostitute, a would-be mugger, a heroin user and dealer, an accomplice to armed robbery -- and a genius poet who was headed for an early grave, but was sidetracked by rock ‘n’ roll.”In addition to drug abuse Dee Dee would also suffer with mental illness and drug abuse put a strain on his marriage to his first wife Vera Boldis The couple would separate in 1990 before finalizing their divorce in 1995.

In the years that followed the Ramones would undergo numerous lineup changes with Dee Dee remaining intact until 1989 after playing on 11 records. It was during his time in rehab in 1987 he soon learned about rap music, which changed his career path following his exit from the Ramones. I always loved playing live with the ramones but I had to kind of like go my own way and stick up for myself and do what i wanted to do. There freaked you know at first they didn’t believe it. thought i was going through a midlife crisis, they thought i’d be back. He won’t be though.

And By the age of 16 Thunders would take up the bass guitar and would start attending shows of the bands like the Who, and Small Faces and even rubbed elbows with the big rockstars at the time including Rod Stewart who he drank beer with backstage at the Newport Folk Festival.
By age 17 Thunders would latch onto the Detroit Music scene and His childhood friend Gail Higgins remembered “We would drive eight hours to see the MC5 or The Stooges,”It was around this time that Thunders quit bass and picked up guitar. “Whenever he was practising, I used to yell into the bedroom: ‘Give up, Johnny’,”
Given the look of the New York Dolls, Thunders never blended into the crowd - he would frequently borrow his girlfriend’s clothes. His former bandmate from the band the Heartbreakers Walker Lure rememberd “He had high-heeled boots, velvet jackets and pants, bowling gear,” “I’d see him at all the shows – mostly the British bands, as opposed to the Grateful Deads and Jefferson Airplanes – so I’d seen him around for years. Then when the Dolls started happening I said: ‘Holy! There’s that guy.’”
The story of the New York Dolls began in the early 70’s in the East Village of New York with the original lineup consisting of vocalist David Johansen , guitarist Johnny Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane, drummer Billy Murcia and pianist Sylvain Sylvain. Some of the band members were already familiar with one another prior to the formation of the Dolls as they played with each other in various bands and The band quickly got noticed with their look. They had big hair, wore silk scarfs and dressed like women.In fact sometimes they got mistaken for women.
Fashion aside, The band quickly got noticed and would find themselves playing at Wembley Stadium in London, England supporting the faces a year later, but during that trip Tragedy would strike as drummer Billy Murcia die due to an accidental drowning during a party.
Johnny Thunders friend Gail Higgins would remember: “Johnny was devastated. He was the closest with Billy and it really upset him. Johnny was very sensitive and loving, very needy and very insecure.”

hroughout most of 1977 the Heartbreakers would call London their home and record their lone album L.A.M.F. The record was hampered by mixing issues that lasted months and months and ultimately forced the demise of the band with the band’s manager remembering
“That mix can be completely laid at the door of Jerry Nolan.” “He went into this kind of control freak thing where he had to mix it. But everyone was stoned. Walking into the studio was like walking into a crack house. I should have gotten a gun and shot a couple of them dead.” he’d remember
Walter Lure of the Heartbreakers remembered the record label pressures with the album saying: “We were told we needed to release it in time for Christmas because they needed to make some money. So they just put us in a room and said if it doesn’t get released you’re not gonna have a contract. Johnny, Billy and I said yeah; Jerry said no, he was leaving, and just walked out.”
Nolan would form his own band the Idols which would make a name for themselves back home in New York. The Heartbreakers meanwhile limped along but Thunders was devastated by Nolan’s departure.\\
The Heartbreakers would be done by 1980 but would sporadically reform and perform shows together until 1990. And following the breakup of the band Thunders would remain in London and release a series of solo records featuring a whose who of the UK punk rock scene with his first being So Alone in 1978. He would eventually find his way back to the US and hook up with one of his idol’s MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer to form the shortlived project Gang War with kramer remembering

By 1986 Thunders seemed to turn his life around and repaired some of the fractured relationships in his life and soon enough Thunders was offering words of advice to other musicians stuck in the grip of addiction. By 1987 Thunders would get a second chance at being a father with the birth of Jamie Gazale, but something was wrong. The mother to his new child remembered

Why Pearl Jam Fired Dave Abruzzesse
Pearl Jam was a band who seemed to have trouble holding onto a drummer during the 90’s. During the decade the band had 5 different drummers including Dave kruzzen, Matt Chamberlin Dave Abruzzesse,,Jack Irons and their current drummer Matt Cameron. Today we’re going to talk about fan favourite Dave Abruzzese (AhBrewZeeSee).
In 1991 Pearl Jam would release their monumental debut record Ten that saw drummer Dave Krusen behind the kit. Krusen left Pearl Jam in May 1991 just as the band was going to england to mix Ten and he checked himself into rehab.. According to Krusen, he was suffering from personal problems at the time including alcohol addiction and dealing with his first child on the way. It would take two more tries, but by 1994 he was sober.
Matt Chamberlin was brought in to play a string of dates for the band who were out on the road promoting ten and was offered the drumming spot but declined since he wanted to slow down his life a bit and he would tell author Mark Yarm in the book Everybody loves our town that he felt no emotional connection to the band since he was a replacement player. Chamberlain also had his eyes set on joining GE Smith’s house band on the show saturday night live,. Chamberlain was friends with a drummer named Dave Abruzzesse who he knew back in Texas. He would recommend the drummer to Pearl Jam During this time Abbruzzese was working in a plant shop and he would tell author mark yarm: “I was working at a head shop. My expertise was in the grow dept. So if people would come in saying they wanted to grow lettuce hydroponically in their closet wink wink i would help them get setup.’ The drummer was also playing in a funk band at the time in Dallas called Dr. Tongue, while also hosting his own radio show on community radio called Music We Like Show. It was that show where he first heard of an up and coming band named Pearl Jam, but his initial reaction to the band may surprise you..
Abruzzese initially had a negative response to Pearl Jam’s sampler CD he played on the show and claimed he only made it through 25 seconds of the first couple songs.
Krisha Aurgerot who was Pearl Jam’s manager Kelly Kurtis assistant would tell Mark Yarm: I was shocked to see Dave Abbruzzese in the lobby of Curtis management when they were trying out drummers. Because he was such a rocker. Super long hair wearing a track suit. He’s from texas so it’s a totally different vibe. I could see him in alice in chains, not in pearl jam.
Abruzzesse would end up arriving in seattle just as the band was filming the video for their single Alive. Abruzzesse wouldn’t perform in the video as Matt Chamberlain was still in the band.
But Soon enough Abruzzese would start performing with the band just before the release of Ten and following his second show with the band as act of solidarity he would get a tattoo of the Pearl Jam stick figure logo tattooed on his left shoulder. Abruzzese would tour extensively with the band over the next 3 years performing on their MTV unplugged set, Saturday Night Live, the band’s follow up record Versus, and on their 1994 follow up Vitalogy. It was during the making of vitalogy where tensions seem to flare up in the band leading to his dismissal
According to guitarist Stone Gossard Vitalogy was the first pearl jam record where Eddie Vedder was the one making all the final decisions on the album and according to producer/engineer adam kasper he claimed Vedder wasn’t happy musically with Abbruzese with Kasper claiming “Dave was an extremely busy player and eddie like a more raw sound We even started out with drum machines and that’s sort of a slap in the face to the drummer. “
It’s also been claimed that there were personality conflicts between the members and abruzzese more specifically frontman eddie vedder and bassist Jeff Ament, There was one story in particular which apparently rubbed Eddie Vedder the wrong waye. It was claimed by producer Brendan O Brien at one of the recording sessions abbruzzese accidentally knocked over Vedder’s guitar that was a gift from The Who’s Pete Townsend, The guitar broke and Abruzzese apparently left a little note for Eddie and left the studio to go do a drum clinic or some sort of self promotional gig.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen would play a crucial role in pop star Michael Jackson’s hit song Beat it from his 6th album Thriller. The guitarist was taken by surprise when Thriller came out in 1982 and his name was nowhere to be found. Not only that but Eddie wasn’t the original guitarist who was asked to play on the song So what happened. Stay tuned to find out the full story.
The Who's Pete Townshend would claim that he was originally asked to play on the song Beat It, but was unable to and instead recommended Eddie Van Halen telling Rolling Stone
“I was once asked by Michael Jackson to play electric guitar on the Thriller album,” “I said I couldn’t do it but recommended Eddie who called and we chatted. He was utterly charming, happy about the connection, but told me how much he was enjoying playing keyboards. His smile was just classic. A man in his rightful place, so happy to be doing what he did.”
Eddie Van Halen was personally asked by Thriller’s producer Quincy Jones to help with the song. Eddie admitted in a 2012 interview with CNN that he didn’t know a person named Quincy at the time and thought the phone call was a practical joke saying:
“I went off on him. I went, ‘What do you want, you f-ing so-and-so!,’” “And he goes, ‘Is this Eddie?’ I said, ‘Yeah, what the hell do you want?’ ‘This is Quincy.’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t know anyone named Quincy.’ He goes, ‘Quincy Jones, man.’ I went, ‘Ohhh, sorry!’” Eddie agreed to do the track but was also skeptical about how much he had in common with Jackson considering they played different styes of music. But Jackson had actually written “Beat It” to be a rock song, helped in large part Toto guitarist Steve Lukather who also played on the track.
Van Halen had a break in their working schedule and according to the guitarist he did the session for free and it only took about 20 minutes and his part amounted to about 20 seconds guitar solo on the track,. Quincy Jones wanted the guitarist to improvise recalling in a BBC documentary about Jackson

Eddie would play the solo and according to engineers in the studio it was during that session that one of the speakers caught on fire. One of the engineers would exclaim “this must be really good.”
Right before Eddie’s guitar solo begins, a noise is heard that sounds like somebody knocking at a door. It was originally reported that the knock was a person walking into Eddie's recording studio. A different story claimed that the sound was simply the musician knocking on his own guitar.[] The sound, however, is that of Jackson knocking on a drum case, as he is credited in the album's liner notes.
Eddie would tell CNN he listened to the track and re-arranged the entire track while Jackson was out of the studio, but the popstar had no issue with the song’s new arrangement as he said here.
Eddie would also claim in the same interview that Jackson’s band was very insular and that they rarely asked for outside help from musicians on records. Eddie was not credited on the album, he didnt get paid and he wasn’t in the music video, but he did make several live appearances with Jackson.. In fact Eddie would tell Piers Morgan in 2012 he was naive about how popular Jackson was saying in 2012 “whose gonna know if i play on this black kid’s record?” Eddie was probably right to be a little naive considering this was 1982 and MTV wasn’t playing a lot of black artists, in fact I’ll be doing another story in the future about how playing Michael Jackson became a huge fight for MTV and how the king of pop literally saved the network, but that’s a story for another time.
Following the release of Thriller Eddie recalled being at Tower Records and hearing the song playing in the store and how some people were critical of his guitar playing on the track claiming. "The solo comes on, and I hear these kids in front of me going, 'Listen to this guy trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen.' I tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'That is me!' That was hilarious."

FILM DESCRIPTION:
One man's struggle to rise above his circumstances prompts him to try a career in music in this acclaimed drama from writer and director Craig Brewer. Djay (Terrence Howard) is a low-level pimp and drug dealer who scraped together a living in the ghettos of Memphis, TN. Djay isn't happy with his life, and the realization that he's reached the same age when his father unexpectedly died has made him start thinking about changing his ways. Djay has always had a gift for spinning stories, and after picking up a cheap keyboard, he begins picking out beats to go along with his rhymes. After bumping into an old high-school buddy who works in gospel music, Key (Anthony Anderson), Djay decided to take the plunge and remake himself as a rapper. With the technical know-how of Key and the musical input of a local beat maker named Shelby (DJ Qualls), Djay begins turning his way with words and his first-hand knowledge of the street life into music, as his two live-in girlfriends, Lexus (Paula Jai Parker) and Shug (Taraji P. Henson), add their musical input and emotional support and Nola (Taryn Manning) continues to turn tricks to pay the bills. When local boy-turned-nationwide hip-hop star Skinny Black (Ludacris) comes to town to pay a visit to Arnel (Isaac Hayes), a club owner friendly with Djay, he sees an opportunity to put his demo in the hands of someone who can bring his music to the masses, though it turns out to be far more difficult than he expected. Hustle & Flow had its world premiere at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, where it received a number of rave reviews and took home the Audience Award.
