SZA | Dealing With Industry Drama, Dating Drake, Plastic Surgery & Putting Her Special Twist on Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Solána Imani Rowe, better known by her stage name SZA, came into the world on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was raised there until the age of 10 when her family moved to Maplewood, New Jersey. Her mother, a Christian Pan-Africanist and her father, an Orthodox Sunni Muslim, raised her in a conservative interfaith household and had her attending both Sunday school and Muslim school. She describes herself as a loner in high school mainly focusing her time on gymnastics and being a science nerd. After graduating from high school in 2008, she later went to several colleges, finally settling at Delaware State University to study marine biology. She eventually dropped out of school after deciding that she wanted to pursue singing as a career.

Queen Latifah | Being a Woman in Hip Hop, That Key She Wore Around Her Neck & Is She or Isn'

Queen Latifah | Being a Woman in Hip Hop, That Key She Wore Around Her Neck & Is She or Isn' Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Although her 1989 debut album, All Hail the Queen, sold less than 500,000 copies, it still made a major impact. And just like that, Queen Latifah became a spokesperson for a neglected constituency -- young black women. As the author of 11 out the projects 12 original tracks, Dana Elaine Owens, later more famously known as Queen Latifah, developed her writing and rhyming skills at a very young age. While growing up in East Orange, New Jersey, the always smart Latifah was identified as gifted in elementary school, and went on to skip a grade. She adopted the latter part of her stage name, meaning “gentle”, “kind” and “pleasant,” in Arabic when she was just 8 years old. She’s said the "Queen" in her name is more about strength and about women being treated as such.
She started rapping in high school after initially finding her voice singing in church and honed her skills performing at talent shows and parties. After her demo got the attention of the powers that be at Tommy Boy Music, she was signed by the label and released her first single, "Wrath of My Madness" in 1988 at the age of 18.

RL, T-Low and Tweet, better known as R&B trio Next, blazed up the charts in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with several hits that had everyone moving their feet and their hearts feeling some kind of way. What Happened To Naughty By Nature? | Treach Fired Vin Rock on Twitter?

What Happened To Naughty By Nature? | Treach Fired Vin Rock on Twitter? Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Hip Hop trio Naughty by Nature, consisting of Anthony Criss, better known as Treach, Vincent Brown, better known as Vin Rock and Keir Lamont Gist, better known as DJ Kay Gee came together in their teens in East Orange, New Jersey. The first time they performed as a group was at East Orange High School during Kay Gee’s senior talent show in 1987. Growing up, Kay Gee looked up to his older brother, who was heavily into the hip hop music and fashion. But, it wasn’t until after he saw the 1983 hip hop film Wild Style that he became inspired to become a DJ. As a DJ, Kay Gee knew he needed backup so, he asked his childhood friend Vinnie to beatbox for him. But they still needed an MC. Vin knew the perfect person for the job. A guy in his Health class that went by the nickname Tiny T Treachery who would later become known simply as Treach.
