Jack Johnson sits down with Zane Lowe for a mini jam session and an open conversation about his eighth studio album, ‘Meet The Moonlight.’
Jack Johnson explains that his audience’s reception of the album reshapes the way he hears his own songs. Most of Jack’s most iconic love songs began as improvised tunes to make his wife laugh, but Jack’s gift is in his ability to find universal truths within personal moments with his family. Becoming a father and raising children altered Jack’s identity, and pushed him to become more present, which the theme he is exploring in ‘Meet The Moonlight.’ Jack also explains his experience working alongside his new friend Blake Mills, and reveals the meaning behind a couple of key tracks.

At this point in their reign as the world’s biggest band, the members of BTS are accustomed to hero worship and nervous fans. But as that group’s leader, RM, sits across from Pharrell Williams in early September, onstage in an empty, secured auditorium at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art, he’s unnerved to find himself on the other side of the equation. It feels “embarrassing,” RM says with a smile, to talk about his artistic journey in front of “my own idol.”

Los Angeles, California
1991
Two friends who had known each other since the sixth grade, Zack de la Rocha and Tim Commerford, meet a drummer named Jon Knox. Knox told them that his old bandmate, Tom Morello, was looking to start a new band after their old band, Lock Up, had broken up. Morello invited de la Rocha and Commerford, as well as a drummer named Brad Wilk, for a jam session. De la Rocha and Commerford actually used to be in a band together back in junior high, but other than that, the four had never played together before. The jam session turned into multiple jam sessions, and the next thing ya know, they had a band. De la Rocha would be the vocalist and provide the lyrics, which would undoubtedly be politically charged most of the time. By the way, he had been in multiple bands before this. Morello would play guitar. Commerford would play bass. Wilk would play drums.
They named themselves “Rage Against the Machine.” Apparently that name was originally supposed to be the name of a song and album de la Rocha had written for his previous band, Inside Out. Apparently this dude named Kent McClard also coined the phrase in a 1989 article in his zine called No Answers. Regardless, over the years many of their fans would come to view “The Machine” as any system or organization that was responsible for injustice in the world. “Rage Against the Machine” ended up being a pretty fitting name.
Their first performance was in “somebody’s living room” in Orange County, California. After that, they quickly gained a following. Not wasting any time, they recorded a 12-song demo, releasing it on cassette tape in December 1991. Throughout early 1992, the band sold the tape for $5 at their live shows, eventually selling more than 5,000 copies of them. Oh by the way, if you have one of them, ya might want to hold on to it. I saw one sold online for hundreds of dollars.
Anyway, the artwork featured images of stock market reports with a single match. The band also printed the statement “No samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this recording,” which would be printed on all later recordings they released. In the liner notes, they also referred to themselves as “Guilty Parties,” which would also be printed for all later recordings they released.
Oh, and they also sent the demo album to many major record labels, and while several wanted to sign them, they ended up signing with Epic Records. In April, they recorded their debut album at Sound City Studios in L.A. They ended up re-recording seven of the twelve songs that were on their demo. De la Rocha wrote the lyrics, which were obviously politically motivated and attacked multinational corporations, cultural imperialism, and government oppression. They seemed to represent a leftist voice that had become less prominent in the 1990s. Tom Morello’s guitar work was inventive, to say the least. In the studio, he was constantly experimenting with the weird new sounds his guitars could make. Garth Richardson produced. After leaving the studio, the band hit the road, playing a notable show opening for Porno for Pyros at one of their first ever gigs. In October, they toured Europe, and by that time the hype for them was already building.
Epic released their self-titled debut studio album on November 3, 1992. The first single, “Killing in the Name” ended up being a huge radio hit.

This Tiny Desk concert was part of Tiny Desk Fest, a four-night series of extended concerts performed in front of a live audience and streamed live on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
Dec. 2, 2019 | Sidney Madden -- "I'm gonna get real comfortable with y'all, so I'm need y'all to get real comfortable with me," Megan Thee Stallion told the excited Tiny Desk Fest crowd as soon as she assumed her position behind the desk. After promptly switching out her patent leather heels for some fuzzy Louis Vuitton slippers, she let the room know, "Now, don't be scared to get ratchet."
From there, the Houston rapper wasted no time demonstrating why she's a superstar in the making. Megan exuded irresistible charisma, cracking jokes with the crowd and rattling off explicit bars from her award-winning mixtape, Fever, for the live audience watching on YouTube and social media.
From "Hot Girl Summer" to the platinum-selling "Cash S***," Hot Girl Meg's raunchy hits took on new life thanks to a live backing band, Brooklyn's Phony Ppl, who seamlessly blend jazz, R&B and hip-hop. Midway through the spirited set, Megan and Phony Ppl surprised the audience by premiering an unreleased collaboration, a bouncy banger titled "F***** Around." After the first verse/chorus, the adoring crowd was singing along as if they'd known the song for years.
It was the first time Megan performed with a live band in public, but then again, there's been a lot of firsts over the past year. This time last fall, Megan was rapping her heart out at local shows, balancing classes at Texas Southern University and occasionally dropping a fire freestyle video from a suburban cul-de-sac driveway. Since then, the brilliant and bodacious rapper ascended to major festival stages, became one of the most sought-after features on other stars' songs, and electrified late-night television audiences.
Though she's dubbed herself a stallion because of her tall and voluptuous frame (Meg stands 5 feet 10 inches without heels,) the 24-year-old rapper has proven herself to be a workhorse when it comes to consistency. Her viral 2019 freestyles shot her online exposure through the roof and whichever alter ego she chooses in the moment — Tina Snow, Hot Girl Meg, Stalli — she's maintained the spotlight all year thanks to a steady stream of new music, an engaging personality and her own viral social media campaign, Hot Girl Summer.
Though she's usually known for extensive twerking during her stage performances, at the Tiny Desk, Meg played up a different skill set: impeccable timing and lung capacity. "Yall talk about Meg's knees but sis breath control is pretty impressive too," one viewer tweeted out during the live video stream.
Megan's lyrical content lies in subverting established sexual dynamics and no matter the level of raunch she deploys, empowering women remains the artist's manifesto. Co-signs from all across hip-hop, from Q-Tip to Nicki Minaj to Chance the Rapper, have only bolstered her appeal and validated her bars in the eyes of the genre's cultural gatekeepers.

As Halsey reaches the halfway mark of their tour, you’d think her energy would be drained, but that is not the case. At 9 p.m. sharp, the singer was on stage, composed with a microphone in hand as the intro to “The Tradition” silenced the audience.
Before fans knew it, Halsey was strutting around the stage, jumping up and down as the excitement buzzed in the outdoor venue. Flawlessly moving from “The Tradition” to the fan-favorite “Castle” and then “Easier than Lying,” they didn’t miss a beat, and showed no signs of losing steam.
These first three songs off the setlist were part of the first “chapter” of the show, titled “Capture.”
Soon, graphic visuals showed Halsey slamming her head against a dirty sink, laughing in her own blood as “You should be sad”, “1121” and the Post Malone collaboration “Die for Me” accompanied the horrific imagery.
During the second chapter, “Release,” Halsey spoke to the crowd, saying that Ohio was home to some of their best past shows. As fans cheered and shouted “I love you” to the singer, they entered into new territory with tracks such as “Graveyard” and the ultimate love song, “Colors.”
New visuals continued to grow darker as sirens wailed, unveiling a narrow hallway reminiscent of The Shining. One of the highlights of the show was during the outro of “The Lighthouse,” as concert-goers watched Halsey bathe in an old bathtub, octopus tentacles wrapping around their body. The crowd grew quiet with anticipation as they silently played bass on stage.
The darkness of the moment slowly faded as fans witnessed the third chapter, “Reflect.”
Here, Halsey once again opened up to fans about their struggles with finding love and how eventually, you will find someone who treats you right.
Next came the unexpected acoustic version of “100 Letters” and the homage to their fan base, “Darling.” Tears streamed down the faces of fans as Halsey’s voice echoed through the microphone, proving the strength and vivacity of their vocals. After getting sentimental for a few minutes, the singer brought the energy back with “honey” and “Bad At Love,” creating a perfect sing-along.
Then the final chapter, “Revenge,” commenced.
The female empowerment anthem, “Nightmare,” kicked off the last stretch of the show, and was one of the best performances of the night. A screen behind Halsey displayed abortion statistics in the U.S. For all the women in the crowd, it was a collective release of anger and frustration, just as Halsey intended when writing and performing the song.
“Experiment On Me” and “Without Me” followed, adding even more intensity to the show.
Halsey said their goodbyes before ending with “I am not a woman, I’m a god,” which was a standout on their most recent album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.
Overall, Halsey’s "Love & Power” tour left fans in awe and only wanting more from the singer. It was a night filled with what each chapter described: capture, release, reflect and revenge. #halsey #loveandpower

LYRICS (Written by, The Lumineers, BMI):
I've been trying to do it right
I've been living a lonely life
I've been sleeping here instead
I've been sleeping in my bed,
I've been sleeping in my bed
So show me family
all the blood that i will bleed
I dunno where I belong
I dunno where I went wrong,
but I can write a song
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweet
I don't think you're right for him
think of what it might have been if you
took a bus to Chinatown
I'd be standing on canal
and bowery
and she'd be standing next to me
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
And love, we need it now
Let's hope for some
Cause oh, we're bleeding out
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweet
