Jan. 21, 2020 | Bobby Carter -- "I was talking to J. Cole about me doing this,' Wale said as we rode the elevator up to the Tiny Desk. "He told me to just do my thing, but I wish I had more time to work this set out." Wale's friend and fellow MC was just one of several people who offered advice on how to approach his appearance for the Tiny Desk Fest. But I reminded him he's performed with a live band as much as any other rapper we've hosted, which seemed to put his mind at ease. Wale arrived eight hours before his scheduled set time and, after just minutes of rehearsal, quickly settled in and shook off any pre-show jitters.

More than 10 years ago, the man born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin generated a lot of buzz in the D.C. area with a host of mixtapes showcasing his MC skills over popular instrumentals. What separated him from the hundreds of other hopeful rappers trying to make names for themselves online was his ability to fuse go-go music — D.C.'s homegrown spin on funk — with hip-hop. (Well, that and a crazy mixtape tribute to Seinfeld.) In 2011, Wale joined forces with Rick Ross and his Maybach Music Group and had a real breakout with "Lotus Flower Bomb," the lead single from his sop****re album, Ambition. It went on to earn him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song in 2013.

A native of the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area (or DMV), Wale's calling card remains the rap ballad, a streak he continued on his 2019 album, Wow... That's Crazy, which debuted at No. 7 on Billboard's Top 200. It reveals a man more self-aware than ever, exposing flaws and struggles while keeping his self confidence fully intact.

Wale's Tiny Desk concert opens with his very first hit record and ends with his latest. Sandwiched between are highlights from his catalogue with a special nod to his hometown sound, courtesy of his touring band, Tre And The Ppl (formerly UCB). Tre is Wale's right hand on stage and their effortless chemistry has been intact since the beginning.

Throughout 2019, Wale was pretty vocal on social media about the Tiny Desk. In September, he tweeted, "Still never done tiny desk.. and it's like 20 min away...". About a month later, on the same night Ward 5 Council member Kenyan McDuffie told the D.C. City Council go-go should be the official music of the district — and the night the Washington Nationals won the World Series — Wale finally made it.

LYRICS:
My world has fallen
I’m falling to my knees (oh, yeah)
And now I feel my hands trembling (oh, lord) Ain’t no promise I’ll breathe again
But I won’t back down
For my family you can ransom me Had it hard it broke me to my knees In a foreign I’m driving furious

Like somebody out there after me My girl got my heart only
My friends they got my back, we chase money We together when it's storm or sunny
They expect me for to back down
It’s my destiny
And This might get the best of me I Can’t let you get ahead of us Imma have to escort you to a seat Through it all we can’t fail

Cause the plan is for to achieve I’m just really needing some peace Hoping pain quickly leave
I admit I sound fallen
But for my family I rise up
Plan on completing every mission All before my time up
Inside this car, I get it back
Just watch my motor climb up Protecting all the ones I love
Can’t let this evil blind us

My world has fallen
I’m falling to my knees (oh, yeah)
And now I feel my hands trembling (oh, lord) Ain’t no promise I’ll breathe again
But I won’t back down
But I won’t back down (oh, yeah)

And now I feel my hands trembling (oh, lord) Ain’t no promise I’ll breathe again
But I won’t back down

And when my hands get cold And I’m on my own
Through the dark I crawl
And when my bones feel weak I will keep running
Through the fire
I won’t back down

But I won’t back down (oh, yeah)
And now I feel my hands trembling (oh, lord) Ain’t no promise I’ll breathe again
But I won’t back down
No (oh, yeah)
And now I feel my hands trembling (oh, lord) Ain’t no promise I’ll breathe again
But I won’t back down

About Riverdale:
As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music and not follow in his dad’s footsteps despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Now Archie has no one to mentor him, certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick), aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between Veronica and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)... Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows.
Based on the characters from Archie Comics
