When we think of editing in music, we might think of quantizing lining up rhythm in an R&B song or autotune fixing the vocals of a pop singer. Many people don’t realize that editing exists in classical recordings as well. This episode of Sound Field explores the current debate in classical music of how much recordings should be edited.

Nahre Sol interviews a panel of classical musicians about their take on editing. Jon Nakamatsu, Joyce Yang, Tanya Gabrielian, and Corin Lee share their opinions on how much editing is okay and when it goes too far. At the end of the episode Arthur Buckner and Nahre face off in a quiz to see who can tell which instruments are virtual and which are real.

Lyrics:

Paralyzed, from the inside to my flesh
Bearing the scars running down my neck
I won’t forgive what you made me do
I won’t stay here decaying face to you

Feel the flames through my veins
Trapped by these bleeding chains
Burning on the pyre of your sins
I’ll knock you out for that little grin

So many lives perished by your hand
Reduced to a pile of sand
Right here ! Right now !
Your world comes to an end

Feel the flames through my veins
Trapped by these bleeding chains
Burning on the pyre of your sins
I’ll knock you out for that little grin

Eye for an eye, I’ll grind your teeth
You shut me down, you’ll beg for mercy
Eye for an eye, I’ll grind your teeth
You shut me down, you’ll beg for mercy

I will break you, piece by fucking piece !
I will break you, piece by fucking piece !

Feel the flames through my veins
Trapped by these bleeding chains
Burning on the pyre of your sins
I’ll knock you out for that little grin

Lyrics:

I try but I can't seem to get myself to think of anything but you
Your breath on my face your warm, gentle kiss I taste the truth, I taste the truth
We know what I came here for
So I won't ask for more

I wanna be with you
If only for a night
To be the one who's in your arms to hold you tight
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way
I wanna be with you
