Fred Wesley: The Legendary Trombonist Who Changed Funk Forever Hotney 93 Streams • 1 year ago

🎙️ What’s it like to write funk history alongside James Brown, George Clinton, and Count Basie? In this electrifying episode, Rob Cass sits down with the legendary Fred Wesley — trombonist, composer, and bandleader — whose horn helped shape the very sound of soul, funk, and jazz across generations. From sharing the stage with his father to jamming with Pee Wee Ellis and Maceo Parker, Fred tells it all with groove, grit, and a lot of heart. 🎺🔥

Fred walks us through his incredible journey: his first big break, his pivotal time in James Brown’s band (where he helped create iconic hits like Hot Pants and Mother Popcorn), and how he went on to reinvent funk with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. He talks candidly about being offered a seat in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, his unforgettable work with Count Basie, and yes — even wild shows, career regrets, and writing his autobiography Hit Me, Fred. 📚✨

From leading The J.B.'s to teaching jazz at Berklee, Fred Wesley is a living piece of music history — and in this rare, unfiltered conversation, he brings you behind the curtain of a life spent making music with the greats. 🎶 Whether you're a funk lover or music nerd, this episode is a deep dive into the soul of the groove.

Xavi - The Making of 'La Diabla' (Vevo Footnotes) Hotney 11 Streams • 1 year ago

Xavi - The Making of 'La Diabla' (Vevo Footnotes)

Me gusta porque it looks like we’re just jamming out”. Xavi y el director Héctor Toro nos dieron todos los detalles detrás de la filmación del video de “La Diabla” en el nuevo episodio de Footnotes.

Xavi’s short career has had some extraordinary twists and turns that have made his story into the stuff of legends. Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, the "La Diabla" hitmaker began his musical journey in 2020 with guitar in hand, inspired by the ballads of Mexican pop-rock stars Camila and Sin Bandera. After garnering the attention from Interscope Records with his viral “Amigos con Derechos,” he suffered a serious car accident that left him without the ability to sing, forcing his artistic ambitions to the backburner. Without missing a beat, Xavi kept working on his music while recovering, and later uploaded a video to TikTok singing from his hospital bed. Not only did it go viral, it awakened a certain admiration for the artist’s plight. His recovery brokered a triumphant return with “La Victima,” his tumbado romantico that debuted at #24 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. In late 2023, “La Diabla” became smash as well. “The song was inspired by girls,” the singer reveals in an exclusive interview with Footnotes. “The video was directed by Héctor Toro, and I love its beginning, where I’m at the pool table surrounded by all the musicians. Me gusta porque, it looks like we’re just jamming out.” Xavi and Toro gave us all the details behind the scenes in our latest episode of Footnotes.

Lyrics

la-da-da-da, da-da-da
la-da-da-da-da
la-da-da-da, da-da-da

if i told you how much i think about her
you'd think i was in love
and if you knew how much i looked at her pictures
you would think we're best friends

'cause i know her star sign, i know her blood type
i've seen every movie she's been in, and, oh god, she's beautiful and i know you loved her, and i know i'm butthurt
but i can't help it, no i can't help it

i'm so obsessed with your ex (uh-huh)
i know she's been asleep on my side of your bed, and i can feel it
i'm starin' at her like i wanna get hurt
and i remember every detail you have evеr told me, so be careful,
baby i'm so obsеssed with your ex (ah)
yeah, i'm so obsessed with your ex (ah)

la-da-da-da, da-da-da
she's got those lips, she's got those hips the life of every fuckin' party
she's talented, she's good with kids
she even speaks kindly about me (ah-ah)

and i know you love me, and i know it's crazy
but every time you call my name, i think you mistake me for her
you both have moved on, you don't even talk
but i can't help it, i got issues, i can't help it, baby

i'm so obsessed with your ex
i know she's been asleep on my side of your bed, and i can feel it
i'm starin' at her like i wanna get hurt
and i remember every detail you have ever told me,
so be careful, baby
i'm so obsessed with your ex (ah)
yeah, i'm so obsessed with your ex (ah)

is she friends with your friends? is she good in bed?
do you think about her? no i'm fine, it doesn't matter, tell me
is she easy-going? never controlling?
well-traveled? well-read? oh god, she makes me so upset

i'm so obsessed with your ex (ah)
she's been asleep on my side of your bed (ah, woah)
i'm so obsessed with your ex (god, she makes me so upset)
i'm so obsessed with your, with your ex
