Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.

Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.

Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.

Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.

MC Lyte (born Lana Michele Moorer; October 11, 1970)[3] is an American rapper who first gained fame in the late 1980s, becoming the first solo female rapper to release a full album with 1988's critically acclaimed Lyte as a Rock.[4] She has long been considered one of hip-hop's pioneer feminists.
In 1987, when she was 17, Lyte began schooling other MCs in the art of rhyme; since that time, she has improved upon her musical prowess, with a total of ten albums released to her credit.[9] In September of the following year, she released her first album, Lyte as a Rock, noted for such hits as "Paper Thin" and the battle rap "10% Dis," a response from then-Hurby Azor associate, Antoinette. Both rappers released battle records against each other. Lyte followed her debut with 1989's Eyes on This, which spawned the hits "Cha Cha Cha" and "Cappucino." Both albums were notable for Lyte's uncensored lyrical matter. She sweetened up a little on 1991's Act Like You Know, noted for its new jack swing sound and the hit single "Poor Georgie." Lyte's fourth album, 1993's Ain't No Other, became her first to reach gold status and was notable for her first top 40 pop hit, "Ruffneck". An inspiring 1993 classic anthem, "Ruffneck," was eventually nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Single, and in fact, made MC Lyte the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy.[9] She later went on to become a featured artist on hits by Janet Jackson [10] and Brandy.[11]

Two years afterward, Lyte's fifth album, Bad As I Wanna B, featured production from Jermaine Dupri and Sean Combs, and featured the hits "Keep on, Keepin' On" and "Cold Rock a Party", which featured then up-and-coming rapper, songwriter and producer Missy Elliott. This album was her first with East West Records America and became successful after the aforementioned singles became big hits with "Keep on, Keepin' On" peaking at the top ten and "Cold Rock a Party" peaking at number eleven. It was her second gold album. Her 1998 follow-up, Seven & Seven, however, wasn't as successful and she left East West America by the end of the decade. Lyte released the independently produced record The Undaground Heat, featuring Jamie Foxx, in 2003, which was notable for the song "Ride Wit Me". The single was nominated for both a Grammy and a BET award.[citation needed]

MC Lyte's song "My Main Aim" was the title song of the video game NBA Live 2005 by EA Sports. In 2005, she released two songs produced by Richard "Wolfie" Wolf called "Can I Get It Now" and "Don't Walk Away" (with Meechie). In 2007, she released a song called "Mad at Me" and, in 2008, two songs called "Juke Joint" and "Get Lyte". In 2009 a song titled "Brooklyn" was released, as well as "Craven."

The Clash emerged in 1976 amidst the British punk rock scene, distinguishing themselves with a socially conscious approach to their music. Comprising Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Keith Levene, and Terry Chimes, the band quickly gained prominence with their politically charged lyrics and energetic performances. Despite internal conflicts and lineup changes, The Clash achieved commercial success in the United States, particularly with their albums "London Calling" and "Combat Rock," the latter being their best-selling release.

However, internal tensions within the band began to escalate. Drummer Terry Chimes departed due to personal reasons, and his replacement, Topper Headon, struggled with heroin addiction and was eventually fired. This instability, coupled with disagreements over musical direction and management issues, led to a division within the band.

By the early 1980s, the Clash had split into two factions: Mick Jones on one side and Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, and manager Bernie Rhodes on the other. Rhodes, a controversial figure known for his authoritarian approach, was rehired by Strummer to manage the band's finances, despite previous conflicts. However, Rhodes' control over the band's creative direction further strained relationships within the group.

The tensions came to a head with the release of their final album, "Cut the Crap," in 1985. Strummer aimed for the album to be a departure from mainstream pop and glam metal, but Rhodes exerted significant influence over its production. The resulting album received harsh criticism for its synthetic sound and inconsistent quality, leading to poor sales and further alienating fans and critics.

Following the album's release, the Clash attempted to organize a tour, but Strummer's relocation to Spain and legal threats, along with resistance from band members over Rhodes' heavy-handed management, thwarted these plans. Eventually, in October 1985, Strummer disbanded the Clash.

Despite their legacy as one of punk rock's seminal bands, "Cut the Crap" remains a stain on the Clash's discography, often omitted from discussions of their career. Strummer himself expressed regret over the album's failure and the band's dissolution, acknowledging that the chemistry between the original members was irreplaceable.

In later years, attempts to revisit "Cut the Crap" included a 2005 re-release and a 2021 remix by German musician Gerald Manns, which received mixed reactions from fans and band members. Nonetheless, the album's reception and the circumstances surrounding its creation serve as a cautionary tale of the dangers of internal discord and artistic compromise within a band. Despite their turbulent end, the Clash's impact on music and culture endures, leaving behind a complex and storied legacy.
