The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Ras kass is a rapper, songwriter and record producer from Carson California, Watts to be exact, that grew up a hip hop fan, around the gang banging in his neighborhood, but never taking part in it, although his rap sheet suggest he was more than a trouble maker. In 94 he released Remain Anonymous, a promotional single that caught the eye of the source magazine, that feature him in the hip hop quotable section and led to a deal with Priority Records. His Ethiopian stage name derives from emperor Yohannes the IV and drew inspiration not just from West Coast artist, but heavily influenced and intrigued by east coast artist like Nas, Jay-z Ice Cube, KRS One, Rakim, RZA and the list goes on. With his lyrical ability, he was embraced by the east coast all the same, and to this day his word play from over 20 years ago still have the same razor sharp impact it had back then on new listeners. The Beatles performing “Penny Lane.”

Two days after recording some overdubs for 'A Day In The Life', The Beatles spent the afternoon in East London at Angel Lane, Stratford, filming scenes for the video of 'Penny Lane' with Scandinavian director, Peter Goldmann.

Shortly after the East London shoot, Goldmann and The Beatles headed to Knole Park, the grounds of a stately home in Kent, to film scenes of the band horse-riding in the countryside. Around this time, Goldmann and his crew (but minus The Beatles) travelled to Liverpool to shoot the sequences near to Penny Lane.

A few days before filming started for 'Penny Lane', Goldmann shot a promo for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Both shoots presented a challenge for everyone involved owing to the Musicians' Union ban on any action that could be construed as miming. Despite these limitations, both the films Goldmann made were so innovative that neither would have looked out of place on MTV a decade and a half later.

The Beatles performing “I Want To Hold Your Hand Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/9/64.”

‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ was the first Beatles’ record to top both the UK and the US charts. It was also their first to be recorded on a 4-track, as opposed to the usual 2-track, tape machine. The Beatles had the song well rehearsed when they made the first of 17 takes on October 17th 1963.

Following The Beatles’ historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan show on February 9th, the single – already at No.1 in the charts – gained further momentum. They taped a performance of the song earlier in the day of their live appearance and it was shown on the Sullivan show of February 23rd, which helped maintain the song’s popularity. This avalanche of publicity, engineered by Brian Epstein, helped the single to stay at the top for seven weeks, which made it the longest-running No.1 of their career to date (until ‘Hey Jude’).

Today’s feature is a group from the 90s featuring Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, that became one of my favorites from the underground scene. Their music is highly respected in that space, and one listen to their latest “Rise Of The Black Moon” album, released in 2019 will help you understand why. Their lyrical skill as artist that’s been around 30+ years is still flawless in delivery, subject matter, and creative originality. Add to that, production from their longtime producer and DJ Evil Dee aged just as well, or even better since making the switch to more Lo-Fi instrumentation. Not too many of today’s era know about Black Moon, and even some from their era don’t remember how much potential and expectations to be the next to blow from New York they had in the 90s. Their first album is considered an underground classic. While it didn’t go platinum and create a ship this group could sail comfortably into mainstream household names, it did and does receive grand reviews from album critics and hip hop purest. An argument can be made that Black Moon is the best group from the early 90s that’s still together and still rapping in hip hop today, releasing some of their best work as time went on.
