Guns N’ Roses original drummer Steven adler would be with the group from it’s inception in 1985 until 1990, when he was fired. Adler would play on the group’s landmark record Appetite for Destruction and their follow up ep gn’r lies, but it was during the recording of their double album use your illusion 1 and 2 he was fired from the group due to his drug use that hampered the recording of the album. But 20 years after appetite for destruction came out, Adler would be kidnapped by his own brother. Let’s explore what happened in today’s video
It was shortly after his firing from Guns N’ Roses, Adler sued his former bandmates alleging they made him sign away his rights to any royalties from his time in the band. In 1993 the suit would be settled out of court. In the subsequent years he would be involved a bit in music, at one time claiming he auditioned for AC/DC and started a band called The Road Crew, in addition to playing a brief stint with the band bullet boys. The 2 decades following his firing saw Adler involved heavily with drugs and have numerous run ins with the law. In 1996, Adler would suffer a stroke from his drug use that would forever impact his speech
By 2007 things hadn’t improved in his life and he was on death’s doorstep. It would be his younger brother who would kidnap Steven in a last ditch effort to save his life.
Hailing from Cleavland Ohio, the Adler’s were middle class Jewish Family. Steven’s mother Deanna had two sons from two different fathers Deanna would eventually relocate to Los Angeles where she met another ohio native Melvin Adler who adopted both of her sons who were now 10 and 7, one was named Kenny and the other Michael. Michael would eventually be renamed Steven. Then three years later Deanna gave birth to her third son Jamie. Jamie would tell Yahoo entertainment My father was a real street guy, he lived this crazy life,” “He would always tell me stories about Cleveland. … His friends being blown up in cars or murdered. I was like, ‘No way this is all true.’” In 2011 hollywood would put out a film kill the irishman that contained many of the same tales Jamie heard from his dad as a kid.
His Dad’s job weren’t that wholesome either as he worked for Southern pacific railroad before becoming a bookie, where he employed Jamie to answer phones for him. Despite coming from a big family, Jamie admitted to feeling lonely since he was considerably younger than his brothers and Steven was rarely around getting into so much trouble, that he was eventually exiled to his grandparents house in hollywood. Jamie would tell Yahoo
“He was always this wild, crazy guy,”. “Never believed in rules. … He’d just stay out all hours of the night, partying and getting wasted. But my brother in my eyes could do no wrong. Whenever I saw him, he would give me the biggest hug.”
By 1985 Steven Adler became the drummer for Guns N’ Roses who by 1986 bagged a multi-album deal with Geffen Records. The following year they’d release their debut record Appetite for Destruction whose title perfectly encapsulated Steven’s personality. Jamie would reveal to Yahoo that by the end of 1987 he first learned of his brother’s drug addiction. Doug Goldstein who worked as part of Guns N’ Roses management told Steven’s parents about the dangerous behavior and assured his parents Steven was going to rehab in Arizona for a full month.
But by the time Steven’s parents planned on visiting him in arizona at the treatment center, he left after only three days.
By the time Appetite for Destruction blew up the sales charts in 1988 Steven had shut out most of his family from his life with with Jamie telling yahoo “He basically never left the house for the next two years,”. “Steven didn’t talk to us. He disowned us because he was in this downward spiral.” It was over the next several years Steven would reconcile with his family only for it to fall apart. Then in August of 1990 Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose would announce to the world that Steven Adler was fired from Guns n’ Roses during an interview on MTV with Kurt Loder.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has had his share of feuds over the year and today we’re going to take a look at some of them.

#1 Nikki Sixx

Despite both emerging out of Los Angeles, Motley Crue and Metallica were not part of the same circles and by Ulrich and frontman James Hetfield’s own admissions they used their distaste for the glam metal seen to drive their determination. Here’s Ulrich and Hetfield discussing their disdain for Motley Crue and hair bands.

The war of words wouldn’t resurface until 1997 when Ulrich criticized Motley Crue for playing using a backing tape during the billboard awards show. Crue bassist Nikki Sixx responded putting out a statement on an online forum saying

Dear, Sweet, Fat, Balding, Larz (love the make-up, babe!). Taking your ever-moronic soapbox position on a subject that’s none of your fucking business has made you out to be an expletive as usual. Considering that I and Tommy know that your live tapes have been re-recorded and all your instruments were repaired in Pro Tools (and had that balls to lie to your fans and call it a ‘live’ album)…
People in glass houses should not throw rocks! Considering your bullshit to the press, we feel it’s only fair to return the punch! Your such a poseur… Thanks for releasing that ‘load’ of expletive CD of yours… you made more room for us!!”
Unfortunately for the Crue their new album, their first with Vince Neil in nearly 8 years Generation Swine was a commercical and ccriticcal flop. The feud seemed to die down nearly within a few years as Sixx defended Metallica’s album St. Anger against the angry fan reaction and praised the band’s dedication to their live shows during a 2015 interview reminiscing the time both bands shared a festival bill.

Jason Newsted
The bassist would leave Metallica in 2001 and despite his side project Echobrain being hailed as the main culprit for his departure there was an incident that foreshadowed him leaving the group in the early 90’s. This year newsted revealed to Metal Hammer it was a recording with guitarist Devin Towsend that resulted in some words being exchanged between himself and Lars and James revealingI had just established the Chophouse [studio] in '92, and by '94 we had all the gear. Devin came down at the age of about 22 and was an absolute maniac ... every time he would pick up a guitar, you get, ‘Widdle widdle widdle,’ and you’re like, ‘Dude, where in the hell did that come from? Now play it backwards!’”
It would result in a six track demo with him adding “The guys got wind of it, and Lars said, ‘You gotta come up to the house.’ I didn’t really know what it was for, so I take my bass and go up there. ‘What's up, guys?’ ‘Dude, you know you're in Metallica now, don’t you? You can’t just be making music and sending out tapes to whatever expletive with whichever expletive. You do understand that right. Newsted’s response: “Oh!” He explained that he "didn’t realize at all! I didn’t know about the politics. I was just sharing some metal with my friends! I pretty much broke down on that day in front of Lars and James. I was like, ‘I’m sorry, it won’t happen again!’ And that was the first time." Ulrich would tell Zane Lowe in 2021 f you think about it, Jason is the only member of Metallica who has ever left willingly. And that in itself is a statistic. And the resentment from James and I was just so... You can't do that. You can only leave if we want you to leave. And then we weren't equipped at the time to do a deep dive into why he was leaving. So of course, now you can see 20 years later, it makes complete sense."

The tour was drought with cancellations, and a riot in Montreal that was mostly blamedon Guns N’ Roses and their frontman Axl Rose. Limp Bizkit were one of the biggest rock bands in 2001. They were all over rock radio and MTV and toured extensively. Limp Bizkit would have the distinct honor of being the last band to shoot on the World Trade Center prior to the attacks on 9/11. That’s what we’re going to discuss in today’s video.

Limp Bizkit’s third album, 2000’sChocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water would be the biggest album of the band’s career moving over 8 million copies in America. One of the single’s released from the record would be the song Rollin. . Whenever it hink of Rollin’ NHL Hitz 2002 always comes to my mind. But for the video for Rollin’ Limp Bizkit would shoot part of the video on the the top of the South Tower of the old World Trade Center in New York City. The shoot would happen in September of 2000, nearly a year before the 9/11 attacks. The music video would win the award for best rock video at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards which took place on September 6, 2001. Durst would reveal in an interview that the band received a letter from the World Trade Center on September 10, 2001 congratulating the group on winning the VMA and for thanking the band for featuring the towers in the video. Durst would tell MTV years later I had it framed. I found it very ironic, very bizarre that I received that letter on Monday, and Tuesday the [attacks occurred]. For me to have gotten to go to the top of such a great, powerful structure ... to have those people embrace me and let Limp Bizkit spend 22 hours on top of the World Trade Center doing what we do. ... And for it to be taken down? The structure itself means nothing to me. I don't believe in that structure being a symbol of power, of pride, of America. What means something to me is the people that were killed around and in that building innocently, for no reason except hatred. It overwhelms me. In 2014 guitarist Wes Borland would end up discussing the filming of the song’s video with FHM revealing “Boy, did the video for Rollin’ backfire. It was filmed on top of the World Trade Center. On 6 September 2001 we won an MTV Video Award [‘Best Rock Video’] for it and the staff at WTC sent over a fruit basket to congratulate us. After 9/11 everyone stopped playing it. Nobody wanted to see it. Jennifer Beals
Irene Cara is best known as a singer of movie themes, though she worked as an actress since childhood. Raised in New York City, she appeared on Broadway in 1967 in the musical Maggie Flynn at age eight and can be heard on the cast album for the show The Me Nobody Knows. From the age of 16, she was turning up on television and in films, including a part in the TV mini-series Roots 2 in 1979. In 1980, she was catapulted into stardom and a singing career by her appearance in the film Fame, for which she sang the title song, an Oscar-winning Top Ten hit. Also from the film was her Top 40 hit "Out Here on My Own." In 1983, she topped the charts with "Flashdance...What a Feelin'" from the movie Flashdance, a song she co-wrote that won another Oscar, and Cara won a couple of Grammys for her contributions to the soundtrack. Jennifer Beals stars as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel-mill welder by day, and bar dancer by night. Harboring dreams of a career in ballet, she is given financial support in this endeavor by her boss Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri) and moral support by demanding but big-hearted instructor Hanna Long (Lilia Skala). The film's signature scene is, of course, Alex's water-drenched dance audition, largely performed in long shot by her dance double Marine Jahan. Essentially an old-fashioned backstage yarn, Flashdance was given a contemporary spin by its pulsating, musical score featuring the Oscar-winning Best Song, Flashdance...What a Feeling, (music by Giorgio Moroder, lyrics by Keith Forsey and Irene Cara).

Guitar Hero and Rock band were some of the most popular video games for about half a decade starting around the mid 2000’s. Personally. I was a huge Rock Band fanatic. The developers behind the Rock Band franchise, Harmonix were releasing new songs every week for six years straight until 2013. I remember waiting every week to see what the new songs would be. Because of rock band I got introduced to a lot of music I wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise and got interested in picking up an instrument and taking music lessons. You have to remember, I grew up in a household where the most rock n’ roll music my parents played was Kenny G. From 2007 to 2010 both Guitar Hero and rock band seemed to release new games every year and it eventually led to the downfall of music games. They just oversaturated the market without really innovating, you guys remember that ridiculous rock band plastic guitar with all the buttons on it? As guitar hero got more popular instead of innovating they just started adding avatars of famous musicians including billy corgan, shirley manson and today’s topic Kurt Cobain.

In 2009 Rock Band developer Harmonix would release the highly anticipated Beatles version of Rock Band, while Activision released Guitar Hero 5 that year. Guitar Hero 5 didn’t really feature many new innovations or improvements. Just a new tracklist, some new playable avatars one of which was former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain alongside two songs from the band catalog smells like teen spirit and a live recording of lithium. It appears the master recording of lithium didn’t have the appropriate tracks to be used in the game or the masters couldn’t be found., It was around teh release of guitar hero 5 that Activision put out a promotional trailer of the Kurt Cobain’s avatar performing Smells like Teen Spirit. Of course, it garnered a strong reaction, most of which was negative. In order for Kurt Cobain’s likeness to be used his widow Courtney Love had to approve it, while the surviving members of nirvana krist Novaselic and Dave Grohl had to sign off on the band’s music being included in the game.

The whole controversy with Kurt Cobain appearing in the game took a strange turn when it came to light that his avatar could be used to perform non-nirvana songs. A video of the avatar performing bon jovi’s you give love a bad name hit the internet shortly after the game’s release and the reaction was universally one of disgust. Even Jon bon jovi would comment on the matter telling bbc news“I don’t know that I would have wanted it either,” “To hear someone else’s voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don’t know. It sounds a little forced.” It would come out that the bon jovi frontman was asked to be included as an avatar in the game, but declined.

Fans would blame Courtney Love for allowing Cobain’s avatar to be used in teh game and she would take to twitter deflecting blame saying "It's disgusting and vile and is the result of a cabal of a few assholes' greed," "Not in twenty JILLION years would I EVER have allowed this,"

Someone Gives Love a Bad Name: Guitar Hero Starring Kurt Cobain

The surviving members of Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic would put out a statement that read they were and i quote

“dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile (fak-simile)of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game,” adding, “The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate — we have no control whatsoever in that area.” The pair would ask Activision to “re-lock” the Cobain character and state, “It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.”

Activision the game’s publisher would issue a statement that read ‘Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.’I did come across another article where activision said it was too expensive to lock the character.

Capra made a name for themselves with the adrenaline jolt that is In Transmission, and now return with their riveting sop****re effort Errors. Maintaining all the elements that made their 2021 debut so compelling--raucous energy, frantic riffs, the from-the-gut lyrics and soul-searing delivery of vocalist Crow Lotus-they've stepped things up, with stronger songwriting and a determination reach the next level. "We wanted to create something authentic, something real and honest. Nothing more and nothing less," says Lotus. Adds guitarist Tyler Harper, "I knew that I wanted it to pick up where the first album left off, but that it needed to have an entirely new attitude. If you listen to the last song from In Transmission into the first song on Errors, it's a continuation. From there the album steers off into a direction that still feels similar, but is new."

Tracking in Estuary Recording Studios in Austin, Texas, with Andrew Hernandez, the record was mixed by Taylor Young and mastered by Brad Boatright, the latter two having worked on In Transmission. For collaborations, Capra recruited Walls Of Jericho vocalist Candace Kucsulain-Puopolo to add her inimitable tones to "Human Commodity," while their friend Dustin Coffman from Glassing added backing vocals to a handful of tracks. Producer Hernandez also added some piano to "Nora," which closes out the album in a very different manner than anything they've previously explored. In a complete juxtaposition to the tracks that precede it, "Nora" is atmospheric and lithe, delicate and haunting. "I've always wanted to show a prettier/lighter side to this band where it's not always aggressive," says Harper. "Life is a rollercoaster and sometimes you need to throw some pretty piano into it." Since Capra's inception, Harper has always envisaged each album being a continuation of the last, and then breaking it off into its own journey, seeing "Nora" as "a fun way to start album three!"
