Conductor Jonathon Heyward keeps breaking classical music barriers Hotney 6 Streams • 2 years ago

In September 2023, Jonathon Heyward began a 5-year term as the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The appointment made him, at 31, the youngest conductor of any major American orchestra, and the first Black music director in the organization’s 107-year history. He stepped into trailblazing shoes; his predecessor, Marin Alsop, had become the first woman to lead a major American orchestra when she took the job 16 years earlier.

I have this theory, which I shared with Jonathon during this conversation. I think that any of us who have ever gone first -- who’ve ever had to break any barrier or glass ceiling, ever felt uninvited or unseen -- has an innate and intense need to create a more inclusive world. As a boy in South Carolina, Jonathon first encountered classical music via his public elementary school’s music program, and he’s picked up the work of public education and engagement with a wholehearted energy. In Baltimore, he’s embraced the OrchKids program, which Alsop founded early in her tenure, inviting underserved youth across the city to experience music as a vehicle for developing creative – and life — skills. He’s committed not only to opening the doors of the symphony hall to new and diverse audiences, but also to physically meeting those audiences where they are. The orchestra performs in multiple community spaces throughout a city that struggles with severe socioeconomic disparities and racial divisions.

It might seem unrealistic to think that music can play a role in healing the troubles of our cities, our nation and our world. But if you believe it, and if you work hard to prove it, the more clearly you realize how very true it is. Music, which echoes creative expression through centuries of human troubles, can ignite a flame of wonder, imagination and emotional well-being that just might have the power to heal people and their communities.

This summer, Jonathon started another new job: music director of New York’s Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center, formerly known (since 1973) as the orchestra of the Mostly Mozart Festival. The rebranding is part of a radical transformation at Lincoln Center, driven by a mission to create programming and policies that make the arts accessible to the city’s diverse population. Jonathon’s first concerts with the orchestra were focused on invitation and inclusion. A “Symphony of Choice” concert let audience members vote on which pieces the orchestra should play. “City of Floating Sounds,” by the Chinese-born composer Huang Ruo, came with an app that allowed people to hear musical fragments all over the city before they came to the live performance.

Jonathon is full of ideas about how to change the way people perceive and experience music and what it means. When you go first, you can carve a new path. And when you’re the youngest, there’s a long path ahead. It will be thrilling to watch Jonathon Heyward move forward.

While I’ve talked about a lot of songs and records on my channel, it’s not very often I talk about "what if" stories: In this case were talking about Van Halen's second unreleased album with Gary Cherone. This album, has been shrouded in mystery and speculation, and it represents a fascinating chapter in the band's storied history. Despite the commercial and critical disappointment of Van Halen III, their first album with Cherone, the band intended on working on a follow-up album with the frontman. the only problem was that the wheels eventually came off the whole thing. Today, we'll explore the background, the music, and the legacy of this record.

Gary Cherone joined Van Halen during a turbulent time. The band parted ways with frontman Sammy Hagar by 1996., Sammy claimed he was fired, while the Van Halen brothers claim he left on his own. Eddie claimed the split was due to Hagar not wanting to tour and disputes over appearing on the soundtrack for the 1996 film Twister. Sammy was about to have a baby with his wife, while the Van Halen brothers were dealing with medical issues, Eddie needed hip surgery while his brother was dealing with neck problems. Sammy thought the band should take some time off, The Van Halen brothers should address their medical issues and regroup to work on their next album.

But Van Halen soon got a lucrative offer to record music for the soundtrack of the upcoming 1996 summer movie Twister. The offer esulted in the number 1 hit song Humans Being but it proved to be the final song to feature Hagar for this era of the band.. By June of 96 Hagar left the group. Apparently another source of contention a The compilation record The Best of Both Worlds, which featured tracks from the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar era of the band. Here’s what Sammy told Loudwire.

According to Eddie in 1998, Sammy didn’t want to be compared to David Lee Roth with Eddie telling the knight rider news service that some of the band’s fans thought their 1995 record balance was there first record adding “We have 12 and 14 year old fans who don’t know the history of the band. We actually did it for the fans as opposed to what he says for the money. He himself has two greatest hits out adding in the same interview that Hagar was asked to be a team player and refused.

The group recorded two new songs with David Lee Roth for their Best Of-Volume 1 compilation - Can’t Get This Stuff No More and Me Wise Magic. Excitement grew about a possible reunion with Roth with the band making an appearance with the frontman at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. MTV even started running welcome back spots, but Eddie later remarked the band was never planning on reuniting with David Lee Roth for a tour or new album and the press blew it out of proportion.

Behind the scenes, things were ugly between Dave and Eddie. The band talked in the press about the band focusing on eddie van halen’s hip surgery, while David th reportedly said “Tonight is expletive about me, not Eddie’s hip. All while this was happening Gary Cherone claimed he was already in the band. indicating that Roth may have been used to drum up interest in the band’s Best of -Volume 1 release. Cherone told Rolling Stone in 2012 s. I remember one morning getting up to go to the studio and no one told me all this press was interviewing the Van Halen guys because of the VMAs and all this stuff. They told me, “Gary, no one knows you’re in the band.” I remember bumping into a photographer from Japan and he knew me from Extreme. He goes, “What are you doing here?” I go, “Nothing.”

So how did Cherone end up in Van Halen to begin with. His band Extreme, who were best known for the song More Than Words had disbanded earlier in the year. In the summer of 1996 Cherone received a surprising call from his manager Ray Daniels to audition for Van Halen. It turned out he shared the same manager as Van Halen.

Cherone was shocked by the offer, but thought nothing would come of it, except for a good story to tell to people. He recalled to rolling stone landing in LA remembering “I got off the plane in the afternoon and I remember Mike Anthony came out," he recalled. "I’d

Today, we're diving into one of the most infamous moments in rock history - the time Prince opened for The Rolling Stones, and it went horribly wrong. Buckle up, because this story has it all - rock legends, an up-and-coming superstar, and a crowd that just wasn't having it."
Opening for another artist was nothing new for prince. He had opened for Rick James a year earlier on his Fire It Up Tour.
James recalled seeing Prince for the first time “My manager brought some tapes over and said, ‘Well, there’s this kid who’s got this record, ‘I Want to Be Your Lover,’ and I loved that record. And I saw some videos of him, and he was cool. I felt that he resembled us a lot,” But the two feuded on the road after Prince blew James off stage with James claiming prince was also ripping off his moves. So when it came to the shows opening for the Stones Prince wanted to show up the headliner.
Let's set the scene. It's October 9, 1981, and Prince isn't the megastar we know today. He's just a quirky upstart with one falsetto-sung pop-funk hit under his belt - 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. This is before 'he became a megasuperstar with hits like 1999,' before 'Purple Rain,' before 'Little Red Corvette.' But he soon caught the ear of Mick Jagger who saw his genius after seeinghim perform at the Ritz in New York City during his Dirty Mind tour.
The Stones Frontman remarked about Prince "Prince was a great artist. He broke a lot of musical modes and invented a lot of styles."
In 1981 the Stones were touring behind their album Tattoo On You. The tour was set to open with two shows at memorial stadium in Los Angeles on October 9 and 11th. An audience of 95,000 people were expected to attend each show. Prince was originally booked to open even more shows for The Stones, including two shows at The Silverdome in Detroit. Having Prince open for the Stones didn’t seem like a bad idea. Black artists including Tina Turner, Stevie Woner and Billy Preston had all opened for the Stones
Prince Keyboardist LisA Coleman remembered the feeling in the run up to the show in the book Prince the Man and HIs Music We were so excited, we’d rehearsed our little booties off, our funky black asses. This is it, we’re gonna make the big time.
Prince opened the show, followed by George Thorogood and J Geils band before the Stones took to the stage in the later part of the day. The first day was unseasonably hot and some members of the audience got there in the morning and had to listen to three support acts before the Stones came on.
"Picture this: It's a sunny afternoon, and Prince struts out on stage in his typical attire - a trench coat and bikini briefs. Yeah, you heard that right. Remember, this is 1981, and Prince's provocative style wasn't yet mainstream." "Now, Prince wasn't completely oblivious to his audience. He tried to bridge the gap by playing some of his rockier material. But it didn't matter. The crowd's reaction was immediate and hostile."
Drummer Bobby Z. recalled how the first moments of the show went in the book A Soldier in Prince’s Revolution
So concert promoter Bill Graham comes out and says, “All right, we’ve got a new act for you today.” Boo. Everybody wants the Stones
We start out with I think “Uptown” and they hear us singing falsetto. They’re not interested, they’re not willing, they’re certainly not tolerant. You’ve got three brothers up there. You’ve got weird-looking white people in the back. It’s New Age weird punky funk rock—all the stuff they don’t want to know about or be interested in. They just want the blues or rock and roll. They don’t want to listen to anything new—let alone from the guy who looks like a chick but he’s not a chick and the chicks like him.
The crowd shouted racist and ****phobic comments towards Prince and his band in addition to tossing objects like bottles, cans and fried chicken on stage.
Prince bassist Brown Mark who played with Prince for the first time that night recalled: "Next thing I noticed was food starting to fly through the air like a dark thundercloud. Imagine 94,000 people throwing food at each other; it was the craziest thing I had ever seen in my life.
