John McWhorter has strong opinions. In fact, most people first encounter him via his Opinion column in The New York Times, in which he opines freely and fearlessly on subjects that are often controversial, even polarizing in today's polarized world. I first connected with John over the music of Scott Joplin, hardly a controversial topic. Ragtime often evokes an old-timey image of boater hats, suspenders and lemonade on the porch. But look under that sepia-toned surface and you'll find a complex, multi-layered American story.

Consider the life and times of a Black composer born just five years after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, coming of age in an era of liberation, transformation and what must have seemed like boundless promise. But in the end, Joplin's American Dream evaporated, leaving him defined by the constraints of racial and cultural bias. History remembers him as the King of Ragtime, but not as a classically-trained composer who hoped that his grand operas would be his legacy.History, as we're realizing in our own swiftly-changing times, is often distorted by the biases of its writers. My conversation with John began over our shared love of Joplin's music and quickly developed into a discussion about how his story can teach us to reconsider the past through a wider lens, reevaluate our experience of the present, refocus our intentions for the future and even revise our opinions about the world we live in.

“The long anticipated new Dokken album, ‘Heaven Comes Down’, is finally done and the first single is titled ‘Fugitive’!” declares Don Dokken. “The inspiration for the lyrics came from what seems to me to be an uncertain world these days. It’s an up-tempo Rokker as are many on the album. I don't know what the future holds for our world, so I decided to take a step back and watch it all unfold… Yes, I guess I've become like many these days a fugitive from life. Hence the title!”

“The song rocks and the lyrics are self-explanatory,” continues Don, “like many songs I've written, it came to me late at night. Inspiration and pure stream of consciousness have always been the best formula for me when composing. It has that classic Dokken sound… A great song to blast when driving down the highway.”

You want to rock? Sink your teeth into ‘Fugitive’, which rides some shimmering guitar work courtesy of 20+ year member Jon Levin, and if you want ballads, head on over to ‘I’ll Never Give Up’, hanging on that Coliseum chorus, Levin laying down a landmark solo. The pattern of Heaven Comes Down never falters in delivering the goods on both sides of the fence. ‘Just Like A Rose’ brings the Pacific Coast Highway to desert plains with its smooth, effortlessly-driven gears, and ‘Saving Grace’ carries a mystical malevolence. But ‘Santa Fe’ is perhaps the most revealing with Don Dokken opening up with what amounts to a ‘life-moment biography’: a spartan acoustic arrangement allowing the rich yet road-driven vocals to frame what might well prove to be the defining moment of Dokken’s career.

It didn’t matter if you had your dial set to either a pop or hip-hop station in the 2000s, Lloyd Banks was coming through your speakers regardless. Whether it was with G-Unit or flying solo, the New York rhymer could ride the airwaves with your DMXes and your Britney Spearses. Bolstered by a voice that sounded like a swig of Malbec, Banks became one of hip-hop’s go-to collaborators in the 2000s because his flow seared a cool sizzle to every track he touched. “Beamer, Benz, or Bentley” with Juelz Santana boasted riches with fun alliterative detail. On “Loyal to the Game” he enhanced post-humous Pac bars. To be sure, LB stands on his own. Relisten to “On Fire.” It goes punch for punch with similar club bangers like Nelly’s “Hot In Herre” and frequent track-mate 50 Cent’s “In Da Club.” With his new album, ‘The Course Of The Inevitable 3: Pieces of My Pain,’ the hip-hop OG wants to remind people of just that. "As crazy as it sounds, it's 20 years in, you gotta remind people sometimes," he recently asserted. To back it up, he slid down to our Brooklyn ctrl stage to perform album cut ‘Movie Scenes.’ Being a man of the people, he also dug up a fan favorite. “Survival” is from ’06’s ‘Rotten Apple,’ and don’t be surprised if you find yourself spinning that record for the rest of the day.
