Ever heard of the saying Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth?? Well that also applies to overly large rap groups as well; especially when there appears to be more than one head chef in the kitchen. Today's topic of discussion had more cooks than albums and the group; ironically called The Diplomats or The Dipset Crew; fell into chaos the more they recruited new rappers. Originally riding into the rap scene on the coattails of Cam’Ron’s success; the group (at the time consisting of the original lineup Cam’Ron; Jim Jones; Freeky Zekey and the late-joiner Juelz Santana) released an album that gained Gold certification barely two months after release. They seemed set to be the next big group in rap but it all came crashing down within years after they added three more members; Hell-Rell; .40 Cal and J.R. Writer. The group soon suffered artistic differences; releasing just one more album two years later; affiliating themselves with even more artists in the form of Jay Bezel; Stack Bundles; Kat Williams and Jha Jha and disbanding shortly after. The group reunited several times over the course of the split; but only released one more album almost fifteen years later. While the crew never really beefed with any other rap collectives they had plenty of internal feuds and that’s what we are discussing today. Marc Bolan is best known as the frontman of T Rex. In the early 70s, he and the band led a musical movement known as glam rock, which combined heavy hooks with extravagant displays of fashion. T Rex would experience critical and commercial success in their native UK during this time and would also prove extremely influential in America. By 1977, following a brief commercial decline, the band were in the midst of a strong comeback, but Bolan would die in a serious car wreck at 29 years old. While the crash itself was undisputed, it turns out that the circumstances around the crash contrasted with what was first reported. That’s what we’ll discuss in today’s video.
Bolan was born Mark Feld on September 30th, 1947, in the east London borough of Hackney, to an English mother\ Ashkenazi Jewish father. Both parents came from a working-class background, with his mother operating a food stall on Berwick Street Market at the time, while his father was a truck driver. Although that meant that the family sometimes struggled to make ends meet, Bolan nonetheless had a happy childhood with his older brother Harry. Harry would comment on the time his brother’s larger-than-life presence took shape when he was five years old, recalling in the documentary Marc Bolan, The Final Word,
“He would adopt a frontman [persona] like Clark Kent and Superman, and his first one was Mighty Joe Young. He was the big gorilla and nobody could beat him. He [always had] a front, and ‘Marc Bolan’ was [one of them],” he’d say.
The family would relocate to Wimbledon, and it was at this point that Bolan was drawn to music. By age 9, his mother bought him his first guitar, and after a few years of simple strumming, he’d gradually become proficient by teaching himself how to play. According to Bolan, the 1956 film The Girl Can’t Help It, would fuel his ambitions for becoming a rockstar. Realizing that his instrument could supplement as a fashion accessory while he moved around, he’d take a cue from some of his rock n’ roll heroes, saying,
“I remember seeing Eddie Cochran. The way he held his guitar, unmoved, looked good. Little Richard put his foot on the piano, and I thought that was outrageous. I thought Elvis was the man, because he really used to wiggle his bum…and that influenced me incredibly. I was impressed with the fact that he always had a guitar [on him]. That, to me, was the ultimate showman thing, just sort of pushing it behind his back and throwing it around.”
By August 1965, the 18-year-old musician made inroads in the music industry, signing a contract with Decca Records under the moniker Marc Bowland. He’d then adopt a popular folk-rock sound similar to artists like Donovan and Bob Dylan, and materialize it with the help of session musicians, but his first two singles, “The Wizard'' and its follow-up in 1966, “The Third Degree,” failed to make any impact, which resulted in him being dropped from the label. He had also been changing the stylization of his name several times up to this point. In the book Marc Bolan: The Rise and Fall of a 20th Century Superstar, it’s said that the earliest instance involved changing the ‘k’ in his birthname, Mark Feld, to a ‘c’. As for how he’d eventually get to ‘Bolan’, the most common theory is stated by his brother Harry, who’d recall,
“Around this time, Mark was very friendly with the actor James Bolam. They fell out shortly afterwards, and I had a feeling it’s because Mark used his name as an inspiration.”
Actor Riggs O’Hara agreed, adding,
“Mark just changed the ‘m’ to an ‘n’… [and] liked the sound of it. He couldn’t understand why Jimmy was upset. He thought it was absolutely ridiculous that Jimmy thought he was going to be as big as Mark was. Mark always knew that he was going to be famous,” O’Hara would say.
By late 1966, things would start to look up for Bolan, as he’d successfully convinced legendary producer and manager Simon Napier-Bell to record him by himself with just his acoustic guitar. Napier-Bell soon became Bolan’s manager, and using his c

From 1996 to 2002 Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley lived a pretty reclusive life. If you’ve read either grunge is dead or everybody loves our town there’s a handful of pretty depressing stories about what layne was up to in his reclusive years and how his appearance had drastically changed from years of drug abuse. It was during this time, especially towards the tale end of his life that several of his musician friends and bandmates tried to help him get clean. That’s what we’re going to explore in today’s video.

John Frusciante

It was around either 1999 or 2000 that, Bob Forrest and John Frusciante tried to help convince Layne Staley to get off drugs. Forrest would recount the story in his book Running with Monsters: A Memoir. Forrest who dealt with addiction previously became known as a person who could get through to addicts and Staley’s mom asked him for his help. Red Hot Chili Peppers john frusciante who was newly sober at the time didn’t think they could get through to staley, but joined Forrest anyways in visiting layne in his apartment in seattle.

Bob: “Hey Layne. What’s going on.”
Layne: “Nothing. I know why you’re here.”
Bob: “Your Mom’s worried, man. You don’t look too good.”
Layne: “I’m okay, though. Really.”
After leaving layne’s apartment forrest woul remark to frusciante in his book “I don’t think he’ll come out of this.” to which Frusciante responded, “It’s his life, man.”
Mark Lanegan
The former Screaming Trees frontman would talk to Rolling Stone and talked about getting sober in the late 90’s and tryingto help Layne. He would tell Rolling Stone The first time I saw him (referring to Layne) after I’d gotten clean, I’d been clean a year. I’m pretty sure that [Alice in Chains’] Jerry [Cantrell] and Mike Inez flew me up to Seattle because they were unable to get into his house. He had a camera and lived in the penthouse of this condo. So whenever anybody from that camp would come to see him, he would just ignore it. Jerry and Mike knew that when he saw me, he would let me in. I went along with that, and I also wanted him to see that I was clean, that it was possible to get clean, that his prediction that I would never be able to do it had failed [laughs]. Hopefully, maybe, it would give him the idea that he, himself, could do it. But he didn’t want to do it.
When I got there, I said, “Hey, man, it’s been a while. I’ve been clean for more than 12 months.” And he was like, “No, you weren’t, man. You just left, like, two months ago.” His sense of time had warped. And he wasn’t buying the truth from me. I remember him saying at that point, “I always just keep thinking I’m gonna get that same feeling I got the first time again.”Lanegan would go on to say that he hoped a medical emergency would force layne to change his ways but his medical emergency ended up being his death.
Finally his bandmates more specifically drummer Sean Kinney and Mike Inez tried to help Layne. Inez would reveal in the book how himself and Mark Lanegan would go beat on his door to talk to Layne but to no avail. with Kinney recalling Kinney said: “It got to a point where he’d kept himself so locked up, both physically and emotionally. I kept trying to make contact. Three times a week, like clockwork, I’d call him, but he’d never answer. Every time I was in the area, I was up in front of his place yelling for him. Even if you could get into his building, he wasn’t going to open the door. You’d phone, and he wouldn’t answer. You couldn’t just kick the door in and grab him, though there were so many times I thought about doing that. But if someone won’t help themselves, what, really, can anyone else do?”
It was also briefly mentioned in the book Alice in Chains the untold story that Krist Novaselic of Nirvana would sometimes take food over to Layne’s house. Hoping to save the frontman after losing his friend Kurt Cobain
In the book grunge is dead krisha augerot who worked for pearl jam singled out Alice in CHains manager and Chris Cornell’s wife at the time as being the person who tried to help Layne the most straighten out his personal life recalling “she was a constant in his life trying to get him clean unfortunately he just never accepted it.”
