Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown are two all-time female MC’s who paved the way for so many female artists and many of those artists have cited them as influences and we can still see it today. Two people who started out cordial in the beginning but after a while things just weren’t the same and that’s why I’m here today.

Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, everyone followed the instructions laid out by this band to Jungle Boogie, Get Down on It and have a Celebration! When the members of R&B/Soul/Funk band Kool & the Gang formed in 1964, they never imagined what success awaited them in the next 2 decades. The ensemble, formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, originally consisted of seven school friends who decided to perform together as an instrumental jazz and soul group under the name The Jazz Birds who would later become the Jazziacs. Among them were Robert "Kool" Bell on bass guitar, his brother Ronald Bell on saxophone, Dennis "D.T." Thomas on alto saxophone, Robert "Spike" Mickens on trumpet, Ricky West on keyboards, George Brown on drums, and Charles Smith on guitar.

October 4, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • We've never done a Tiny Desk Concert that wasn't behind my desk at NPR. But when the White House called and said they were putting on an event called South by South Lawn, a day-long festival filled with innovators and creators from the worlds of technology and art, including music, we jumped at the chance to get involved. We chose Common as the performer and the White House library as the space.
This Tiny Desk Concert was a convergence of art and soul, mixing politics with heart. Common's choice of songs dealt with incarceration as the new slavery, imagined a time where women rule the world and honored the man he looked up to all his life, his father. For this occasion Common put together a special six-piece band of close friends that includes the great Robert Glasper, with his eloquent and delicate touch, on keyboards and Derrick Hodge, whose music spans from hip-hop to folk and has made a big imprint on the world of jazz, on bass. Common also asked his longtime friend and collaborator Bilal to sing on two songs. The performance includes three brand new songs, along with one classic, "I Used To Love H.E.R."
Common was born on Chicago's South Side and grew up in President Obama's city. His rap career began in the early 1990s, back when he was known as Common Sense, and he's always taken on big ideas without easy answers in his songs, from abortion to social justice to the legacy of hip-hop itself. 25 years later, morality and responsibility continue to play significant roles in his songs. In 2015, he won an Academy Award alongside the singer John Legend for their song "Glory" from the movie Selma.
Common told us that he'd been invited to the White House many times before, including by Michelle Obama for a poetry reading back in 2011, but he was thrilled by the prospect of performing his music during Barack Obama's final months as president. One look at this Tiny Desk Concert and you'll see that thrill on his face and hear it throughout this magnificent performance on this very special day.
Common will release his 11th studio album, Black America Again, in November.
Set List:
"I Used To Love H.E.R."
"Letter To The Free"
"The Day The Women Took Over"

In 1988, at the age of just 18 years old, a young hip hop fan from the South East region of the United States decided he wanted to join the US Navy. He only spent a short time serving his country and decided to leave the Navy after just two years. Although he was born in Jacksonville, Florida, his family moved to Gastonia, North Carolina when he was just 1 and a half years old.
Frederick Allen Mayne III was born in 1970, but is now commonly known as Fred Durst. At the age of 12 years old he developed a taste for Hip Hop, Breakdancing and Rap whilst holding the dream of one day becoming a break dancer himself. His early years however would see him at a complete loss.
By the time he was in his was 23, he had already notched up a failed marriage, left the navy with no real career prospects and also had a baby daughter that he couldn’t support without a job. He was at least high-school educated.

THE BEST OF BILL EVANS (FULL ALBUM)
William John Evans (August 16, 1929 – September 15, 1980) was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked as the leader of a trio.[2] His use of impressionist harmony, interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continues to influence jazz pianists today.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, United States, he was classically trained at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Mannes School of Music, in New York City, where he majored in composition and received the Artist Diploma. In 1955, he moved to New York City, where he worked with bandleader and theorist George Russell. In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis's sextet, which in 1959, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album ever.[3]
In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader, with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, a group now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio. In 1961, two albums were recorded at an engagement at New York's Village Vanguard jazz club, Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby; a complete set of the Vanguard recordings on 3CDs was issued decades later. However, ten days after this booking ended, LaFaro died in a car accident. After months of seclusion, Evans reemerged with a new trio, featuring bassist Chuck Israels.
In 1963, Evans recorded Conversations with Myself, a solo album created via overdubbing. In 1966, he met bassist Eddie Gómez, with whom he worked for 11 years.
Many of Evans's compositions, such as "Waltz for Debby", have become standards, played and recorded by many artists. Evans received 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame.[4]
The playlist is randomly arranged, I want to give good songs to all of you. Hope you enjoy it.

We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!
Watch Seu Jorge’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010: https://www.npr.org/2010/09/13..../129754791/seu-jorge
Jasmine Garsd | September 13, 2010
Like many in America, the first time I heard Seu Jorge was through his role as a melancholy singer in the movie The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. His rendition of David Bowie classics mesmerized me. The ache of his thick, raw vocals is nearly unbearable. Perhaps it's something about a burly grown man whose voice seems about to give in to tears that's simply heartbreaking. Or perhaps it was the shock of hearing Bowie's music, which in its original incarnation was pure glam rock, sung by a boy from one of Rio de Janeiro's worst slums.
In his newest project, with the company of his fantastic band Almaz, Seu Jorge is far more versatile, almost as if the band were encouraging him to go to that bar, hit that dance floor, flirt with that supermodel. But no matter how smooth he is, he's still that melancholy guy who played Bowie on Steve Zissou's ship (not to mention his heartbreaking turn in the film City of God, as a victim of a sociopathic druglord). Jorge's covers of classic Brazilian songs like "Saudosa Bahia' — which is about wanting to go back home — find him at his best.
I've always been curious to find out what Seu Jorge sounds like live, and in this Tiny Desk Concert I finally got my answer: He sounds as powerful as he does on his records, if not better. And he loves to play live, feeding off the energy of the audience. Later, he mentioned to me — while on his fourth cigarette break; there's a reason behind this man's raspy voice — how much he enjoyed being able to play while sitting right next to audience members. Here's hoping he comes back soon.
Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney formed a personal bond and musical alliance in the early 1980s, collaborating on pop hits like 'The Girl is Mine' and 'Say Say Say'. But this soon soured when Michael Jackson acquired the ATV music catalog in 1985, and therefore the publishing rights of a near full catalog of Beatles hits.
This is a breakdown of the power struggle that followed in the years after and the growing resentment that grew between the two pop icons.

Miami nightclubs in the ‘80s were one of the hottest spots around to hear the familiar keyboard riffs and electro funk drum-machine patterns of one of the most popular music genres at the time; Latin Freestyle! It’s also where this trio met, honed their skills and embarked on a journey to stardom. Then, in the blink of an eye, they were gone and three new lookalikes showed up in their place. Let’s find out what happened to ‘80s Latin Freestyle group Exposé.
