Once Jenny Lewis sinks her teeth into a song, she makes it clear that she's going to define it. Lots of times it's with her voice - the ex-Rilo Kiley singer has a pliable coo that can turn into wry snarl whenever she wants. Sometimes its because she's the writer herself: Lewis lacks nothing in the "get my POV across" department. "Cherry Baby," from her fifth solo album, 'Joy'all,' is on the coo side. When she hit our studio, she brought a crack little outfit that drives her folkish pop down the road. There's a groove to the performance; her strumming is driven by a drummer's push. Lewis wrote the songs on her new album at a Beck-run writing workshop during the Covid days, and cut 'em in Nashville with respected producer Dave Cobb. They rather glitter, don't they? Bask in that coo, and shout respect to one of modern pop's most inspiring artists. These live spins of the title cut and "Cherry Baby" are gonna get ya.

The Trench Coat Museum, recorded live at our triumphant, festival stealing show at Primavera Sound, Barcelona.

As we hope anyone who has listened to our records and seen our live show will attest; the rules of one do not dictate the other. And so, despite many tireless hours spent glued to screens and machines making The Trenchcoat Museum record, the live version adheres very little to the features and form of its recorded counterpart.
Sam gets to flex the psych-rock muscles of his salad days. Chris kind of plays some hammond-style organ, and James simply prats about on a big calculator. Jay and Ry groove out as humans do, rather than replicate the robots on the record. It's a joy to play it live, to relish in its open-endedness.
Trenchcoat can be whatever it wants to be live. This is a document of where it was at then, which is not where it's at now.
