Oliver Taylor Hawkins, born February 17, 1972 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Hawkins graduated from Laguna Beach High School in 1990 after his family moved to the Laguna Beach area of California during the mid 70s.

Taylor aspired to become a musician from an early age, starting to play drums at just ten years old he would spend hours playing along to his favourite records. It was at this age he would discover some of his musical heroes.

Phil Collins of Genesis, Stewart Copeland of the police, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin would all help to shape Taylors early path to becoming a musician.

Taylor would spend his early 20s being a drummer for hire, trying to get gigs with as many people as possible. When he was around 22 years old he landed a job as the drummer for the British born Canadian Rock Singer Sass Jordan which gave him his first real experience of living life on the road.

In 1995 he would join Alanis Morrissette as her permanent drummer on tour up until 1997 when Dave Grohl would ask him to come and play on a new foo fighters record called There Is Nothing Left to Lose.

It seemed like perfect timing for Hawkins and his musical career. Nothing left to lose would spawn some singles for the band with Breakout and Learn To Fly.

It’s no secret however that Taylor had long suffered from substance addiction and in 2001 he came close to losing his life. On a promotional tour in London with Foo Fighters Taylor had taken an almost fatal overdose and was rushed to hospital where he spent almost two weeks in a coma.

Dave Grohl spent almost every single day by Taylors side until he woke up. Hawkins would continue with Foo Fighters to release 8 studio albums with the band, as well as pursuing his own side project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.

Sadly, on March 25th 2022, Taylor Hawkins was reportedly found unresponsive in a hotel room whilst on tour with Foo Fighters. He was just 50 years old.

Taylor Hawkins was without doubt an incredible drummer and certainly a creative force when it came to working with Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters, he will truly be missed.

We all know the story by now, or at least you should! When Metallica formed in 1981 because Lars sucked at Tennis, he teamed up with James Hetfield who were both obsessed with bands such as Motorhead, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath to name a few.

The pair mutually bonded over their love for Heavy Metal and also shared a dream of becoming Rock Stars one way or another. Lars and James wanted to create their own version of heavy metal, but faster, angrier and more aggressive than the traditional sounds of Sabbath and others.

As history shows, Metallica would become one of a handful of bands that would go on to pioneer a new genre called Thrash, and during their early years a young red headed guitar wizard known as Dave Mustaine would contribute greatly to their early success. Some would even argue that Metallica simply wouldn’t have even made it without Dave Mustains early contributions and influence.

Metallica’s first record, Kill Em All, released in 1983 was raw, powerful and by all accounts, Thrash. It is without doubt one of the earliest Thrash records ever released. And the same can be said for their second LP, Ride The Lightning, in 1984.

I have changed the title of this video from "This is NOT Pantera...The Reunion Tour 2023" to "IS IT PANTERA?…The 2023 Reunion Tour". After watching an interview with Zakk Wylde over the weekend, he has stated it is very much a tribute to Pantera and the Abbott brothers where initially it was being pinned as a "Reunion". I still stand by my statements in the video.**

On July 13 2022, Billboard magazine reported that Pantera are to reunite for a reunion tour in 2023. This would be the first Pantera tour in over 20 years.

Singer Phil Anselmo and Bass player Rex Brown have signed with Artist Group International in order to book the North American leg of the tour.

Whilst this may have some Pantera fans excited, there’s one very important aspect of this reunion missing, well, actually two. Vinnie Paul Abbott and Darrell Lance Abbott.

It’s widely accepted that Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell founded Pantera in 1981 when the brothers started jamming together as teenagers. And whilst bassist Rex Brown would be brought in on Bass for the recording of their first record, Metal Magic in 1983, Phil Anselmo wouldn’t appear on a Pantera album until the bands fourth studio LP, Power Metal, in 1988.

Pantera however didn’t receive any attention or commercial success until their iconic 5th studio release, Cowboys From Hell in 1990. This was their first major label debut and signified a turning point in the band's image and sound. It also became one of the most influential metal records of the 90s. Many Pantera fans also consider this to be the real Pantera and often dismiss the previous records.

In the 60s, maybe even earlier, Many biker groups started to adopt the Iron Cross as part of their symbolism, and the main reason was to add a sort of shock factor to their image. Afterall, if the public were going to look down on them anyway, why not go all out and try to piss them off as much as you possibly could. It was a way of saying “I don’t care what you think of me, I live the way I want to live” and of course some bikers wanted to strike fear into people so what better way than to wear the symbol of an evil power from world war 2.

The iron cross just naturally found its way into the Metal community over time. With the music sounding aggressive, it made sense for bands to look aggressive and what better way to do that than to mimic the style of outlaw bikers. And it worked.

Many bands over the years have donned an Iron Cross, most famously Lemmy of Motorhead and even James Hetfield has one on a guitar he uses live. So does the Iron Cross represent any sort of racism as well?

Deftones were and always have been wrongly associated with the Nu-Metal movement, despite the fact their music tells a very different story. The band themselves have even rejected the notion of being associated with the genre so how did they come to be mis-genred.

Korn's debut record, which most consider to be the commercial catapult for Nu-metal, hit the shelves exactly one year before Deftones released their debut album, Adrenaline, well, give or take a few days. So in some regards it’s easy to see why Deftones joined the ranks of Korn, Limp Bizkit and even Slipknot when being designated a Nu-Metal band. They essentially rose to fame in the same scene as the red caps, adidas tracksuits and boiler suits.
