When James Brown INCEPTED Hip Hop
When James Brown INCEPTED Hip Hop Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

James Brown had an influence on early hip hop in many ways, but the most obvious way is how early hip hop DJ's sampled his music. But was this… purely coincidence? Or was this a calculated move by the Godfather of Soul to GET people to sample his music? Was he trying to expand his Godfather title to encompass other genres of music? Had he tried this before? What does Disco have to do with any of this?

Today I'm talking all about James Brown, his influence on hip hop, and how his failed attempt to claim he invented a completely different genre of music set him up to be the Godfather of Hip Hop.

Seu Jorge: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives
Seu Jorge: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!
Watch Seu Jorge’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010:
https://www.npr.org/2010/09/13..../129754791/seu-jorge

Jasmine Garsd | September 13, 2010

Like many in America, the first time I heard Seu Jorge was through his role as a melancholy singer in the movie The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. His rendition of David Bowie classics mesmerized me. The ache of his thick, raw vocals is nearly unbearable. Perhaps it's something about a burly grown man whose voice seems about to give in to tears that's simply heartbreaking. Or perhaps it was the shock of hearing Bowie's music, which in its original incarnation was pure glam rock, sung by a boy from one of Rio de Janeiro's worst slums.

In his newest project, with the company of his fantastic band Almaz, Seu Jorge is far more versatile, almost as if the band were encouraging him to go to that bar, hit that dance floor, flirt with that supermodel. But no matter how smooth he is, he's still that melancholy guy who played Bowie on Steve Zissou's ship (not to mention his heartbreaking turn in the film City of God, as a victim of a sociopathic druglord). Jorge's covers of classic Brazilian songs like "Saudosa Bahia' — which is about wanting to go back home — find him at his best.

I've always been curious to find out what Seu Jorge sounds like live, and in this Tiny Desk Concert I finally got my answer: He sounds as powerful as he does on his records, if not better. And he loves to play live, feeding off the energy of the audience. Later, he mentioned to me — while on his fourth cigarette break; there's a reason behind this man's raspy voice — how much he enjoyed being able to play while sitting right next to audience members. Here's hoping he comes back soon.

Don't try to compare them to another bad little fad! These two best friends with the same name didn’t have dreams of fame and fortune but, they would accomplish just that with their talent and unique fashion style. Then, after going radio silent for many years, followed by one special and nostalgic reunion performance, a shocking death ended it all for good. Let’s find out what happened to American ‘90s Hip Hop duo Kris Kross.

What Happened To Kool & The Gang?
What Happened To Kool & The Gang? Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, everyone followed the instructions laid out by this band to Jungle Boogie, Get Down on It and have a Celebration! When the members of R&B/Soul/Funk band Kool & the Gang formed in 1964, they never imagined what success awaited them in the next 2 decades. The ensemble, formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, originally consisted of seven school friends who decided to perform together as an instrumental jazz and soul group under the name The Jazz Birds who would later become the Jazziacs. Among them were Robert "Kool" Bell on bass guitar, his brother Ronald Bell on saxophone, Dennis "D.T." Thomas on alto saxophone, Robert "Spike" Mickens on trumpet, Ricky West on keyboards, George Brown on drums, and Charles Smith on guitar.

PUNK IN DRUBLIC DOCUMENTARY
PUNK IN DRUBLIC DOCUMENTARY Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Punk in Drublic was designed by NOFX front man Fat Mike. He paired craft beer and punk scene heavyweights NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Rancid, The Offspring, Descendents, Less Than Jake, and The Interrupters, to create an unparalleled live music experience. The documentary tells the story of the touring festival through its first three years. The film is built around exclusive interviews, backstage footage, and live performances. It also delves into the impact and repercussions of the controversial joke that threatened the festival’s existence.

A little word from the director Alfredo M. R. Vicente:
Punk Rock has always been about doing it yourself. The attitude of creating bands and the lifestyle they wanted, even if musical talent, by the hour, was not the first characteristic.

The precursor bands of the '70s influenced the beginning of many other bands of the same style, and they were born, passed through the '80s, without money, sometimes without an audience, without perspective, but the love for music was always there. Some bands survived and got to the '90s, and they created an independent way of showing how much they had evolved musically. Globalization made it possible, and they managed to reach almost every corner of the world. Many bands from the '90s created a huge impact on many different scenes around the globe. And here comes the internet, and now you know, access to information is within reach of the majority. And these same people who have gone through the entire process of movement from the beginning till now realized that, in fact, we do not need the intermediary. We make the music, the style, the clothes, the beers, organize our own festivals or even documentaries.

This documentary was possible by partnering with Punk Rock TV and Stage Dive Films. It was made with independent resources and a lot of passion for this music style, and it was an absolute dream for me to have the opportunity to follow my heroes and my favorite bands.

If you watched and liked and wanna help us to keep doing stuff like this, and a possible continuation of this Documentary, please access

Rod Wave: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Rod Wave: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 3 Streams • 3 years ago

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Mano Sundaresan | April 29, 2021
The first song Rod Wave performs in his Tiny Desk concert comes with a bit of a wink. The St. Petersburg, Fla., rapper interpolates Drake's "Over My Dead Body," the delicate intro to Take Care. Like Drake, Rod Wave makes sad, melodic rap music. But his feels removed from the Canadian superstar's lineage. His cadences are more in step with the full-bodied crooning of Southern rap giants like Kevin Gates and Lil Boosie. It's been said that Rod Wave could be an R&B or blues singer in another era. With this Tiny Desk concert, anchored by the interplay of flute, piano, bass and drums, he seems to suggest: Why not this one?

Cast against a leafy, luxurious backdrop, Rod and his band deliver fiery renditions of three songs off his new album SoulFly, as well as his 2020 hit record "Rags2Riches." When he sings — about coming out of the trenches, about being away from his loved one, about perceptions of his artistry — you can feel the weight of those thoughts pouring out of every line. You can see it, too, in the way he shuts his eyes, grips the mic, sways back and forth. In light of his massive success — he's quite clearly one of the biggest rappers in the country right now — he could've treated this Tiny Desk like a victory lap, but instead, he brings the same heart and earnestness that's made him so beloved.

What's behind the rise & fall of No Doubt? Was it Gwen's fault? I look at: No Doubt's early years as a ska band, Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal dating, their breakthrough with "Tragic Kingdom," followup with "Rise Of Saturn," Gwen Stefani's solo career ("Hollaback Girl", "Let Me Blow Ya Mind"), their "Rock Steady" album, hiatus and Gwen Stefani on "The Voice." The rise and fall of No Doubt!

The album was intended as an experiment using musical styles Brubeck discovered abroad while on a United States Department of State sponsored tour of Eurasia, such as when he observed in Turkey a group of street musicians performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 9/8 time, a rare meter for Western music.

Got The Life - The Korn Story ┃ Documentary
Got The Life - The Korn Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

On October 11, 1994, 5 outcasts from Bakersfield, California released one of the most important albums of the 20th century. Their self-titled debut record which was released via independent Los Angeles label Immortal, would come to be seen by many as the birth of Nu-Metal.

Korn would be considered as the pioneers of a genre that dominated tv screens and radio waves for over a decade. A genre that would also give birth to bands such as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Deftones.

From high school drop-outs to born-again Christians, Korn have become an iconic influence in the world of Heavy Metal and this is their story.

Jonathan Davis was born January 18, 1971, in Bakersfield, California. And his childhood would be that of any typically neglected one. His father, Rick Davis, a keyboard player for Frank Zappa, and his mother, Holly Marie, who was an aspiring actress & dancer, both seemed to be more interested in chasing their own dreams of becoming stars on the big stage as opposed to providing a stable environment to raise Jonathan, who also had sister and two other step siblings.

Chop Suey! - The System Of A Down Story ┃ Documentary
Chop Suey! - The System Of A Down Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Serj Tankian, born in Beirut in 1967, and Daron Malakian, born in Los Angeles in 1975 would end up forming a band together. Whilst they had both attended The Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School during their formative years, due to their age difference they didn’t meet until the early 90s, when they would become friends after realising they were working on separate musical projects in the same rehearsal studios.

Malakian on the other hand, was born in America. And whilst his parents emigrated to the US before he was born, he kept a firm grip on his Armenian roots due to his attendance at an Armenian school in the Los Angeles area.

Malakian was introduced to music from an early age and started collecting records when he was just 4 years old. And he once citied The Beatles and Slayer as being two of his favourite bands. With Reign In Blood being his favourite record.

Regina Spektor: Tiny Desk Concert
Regina Spektor: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 3 Streams • 4 years ago

Bob Boilen | August 5, 2022
Regina Spektor sat in her hotel room waiting as we tuned the piano behind my desk. In those idle moments, she whipped up a "Tiny Song," and she opens her concert singing this sweet, funny and tiny ditty. "Took a train from New York to D.C. / And everyone was coughing on me," she sings, "But I wore a real tight mask / And got myself a negative COVID test." I won't spoil the rest except to say that what unfolds over the course of the next five songs is the humor and passions I've loved in Regina Spektor's music since receiving an early release of her Soviet Kitsch CD in 2004.

Now 18 years later, Regina has made what I believe is her most astonishing record to date, Home, before and after. We hear two songs from this 2022 release, including the album's opening track, "Becoming All Alone." The story has Regina walking home alone when she hears God call out her name: "And He said, 'Hey, Let's grab a beer / It's awful late / We both right here,' " she sings, "And we didn't even have to pay / 'Cause God is God / And He's revered." Their conversation ensues, and Spektor wonders just why life and loneliness don't improve with time. It's the type of truth and whimsy that makes for such heartbreaking music, including old favorites "Fidelity" and "Samson," performed here simply on piano with charm and conviction.
