Guns N’ Roses original drummer Steven adler would be with the group from it’s inception in 1985 until 1990, when he was fired. Adler would play on the group’s landmark record Appetite for Destruction and their follow up ep gn’r lies, but it was during the recording of their double album use your illusion 1 and 2 he was fired from the group due to his drug use that hampered the recording of the album. But 20 years after appetite for destruction came out, Adler would be kidnapped by his own brother. Let’s explore what happened in today’s video
It was shortly after his firing from Guns N’ Roses, Adler sued his former bandmates alleging they made him sign away his rights to any royalties from his time in the band. In 1993 the suit would be settled out of court. In the subsequent years he would be involved a bit in music, at one time claiming he auditioned for AC/DC and started a band called The Road Crew, in addition to playing a brief stint with the band bullet boys. The 2 decades following his firing saw Adler involved heavily with drugs and have numerous run ins with the law. In 1996, Adler would suffer a stroke from his drug use that would forever impact his speech
By 2007 things hadn’t improved in his life and he was on death’s doorstep. It would be his younger brother who would kidnap Steven in a last ditch effort to save his life.
Hailing from Cleavland Ohio, the Adler’s were middle class Jewish Family. Steven’s mother Deanna had two sons from two different fathers Deanna would eventually relocate to Los Angeles where she met another ohio native Melvin Adler who adopted both of her sons who were now 10 and 7, one was named Kenny and the other Michael. Michael would eventually be renamed Steven. Then three years later Deanna gave birth to her third son Jamie. Jamie would tell Yahoo entertainment My father was a real street guy, he lived this crazy life,” “He would always tell me stories about Cleveland. … His friends being blown up in cars or murdered. I was like, ‘No way this is all true.’” In 2011 hollywood would put out a film kill the irishman that contained many of the same tales Jamie heard from his dad as a kid.
His Dad’s job weren’t that wholesome either as he worked for Southern pacific railroad before becoming a bookie, where he employed Jamie to answer phones for him. Despite coming from a big family, Jamie admitted to feeling lonely since he was considerably younger than his brothers and Steven was rarely around getting into so much trouble, that he was eventually exiled to his grandparents house in hollywood. Jamie would tell Yahoo
“He was always this wild, crazy guy,”. “Never believed in rules. … He’d just stay out all hours of the night, partying and getting wasted. But my brother in my eyes could do no wrong. Whenever I saw him, he would give me the biggest hug.”
By 1985 Steven Adler became the drummer for Guns N’ Roses who by 1986 bagged a multi-album deal with Geffen Records. The following year they’d release their debut record Appetite for Destruction whose title perfectly encapsulated Steven’s personality. Jamie would reveal to Yahoo that by the end of 1987 he first learned of his brother’s drug addiction. Doug Goldstein who worked as part of Guns N’ Roses management told Steven’s parents about the dangerous behavior and assured his parents Steven was going to rehab in Arizona for a full month.
But by the time Steven’s parents planned on visiting him in arizona at the treatment center, he left after only three days.
By the time Appetite for Destruction blew up the sales charts in 1988 Steven had shut out most of his family from his life with with Jamie telling yahoo “He basically never left the house for the next two years,”. “Steven didn’t talk to us. He disowned us because he was in this downward spiral.” It was over the next several years Steven would reconcile with his family only for it to fall apart. Then in August of 1990 Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose would announce to the world that Steven Adler was fired from Guns n’ Roses during an interview on MTV with Kurt Loder.

Luscious Jackson would be a staple of the 90’s combining their influences of hip-hop, funk, old soul, punk and vintage samples. They would be hailed as one of the most unique bands of the 90’s, while also being difficult to characterize. Some characterizations included labeling the group as lazy bluesy hip hop or the sister group to the beastie boys. Today, let’s talk about the history of luscious Jackson

The group’s lineup would be made up of bassist and vocalist Jill Cunniff, guitarist and vocalist Gabby Glaser, drummer Kate Schellenback and keyboardist Vivian Trimble. ¾ of the band were raised in New York City in the 80’s, Trimble wasn’t. While she was born in the city, she would instead move to europe with her parents being opera musicians living in Switzerland Austria and France until she was an adult.

Luscious Jackson’s origins began in the 80’s when a 13 or 14 year old Cunniff, Glaser and Schelleback would meet. Cunniff would tell NPR "I think I met Gabby on a stoop on St. Mark's Place, and I believe Kate, as well adding "We were all about 13, 14, and it was an amazing time, as far as not only bands playing but also the early rap scene and the breakdancing scene,". "It was all kind of colliding at the same time." "I remember meeting Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys in front of the UK Club at a Bad Brains show. There were probably 20 of us, all underage, running around to clubs." While the members were too young to get admitted to these shows they would put fake stamps on themselves to get in. Cunniff would celebrate her 13th birthday at club CBGB’s while Glaser would hang out with the clash during the recording of their record Sandanista. Meanwhile Trimble who was living across the pond would get into the same type of hijinx. Trimble and her french friends who hang out at popular parisian nightspots\

Glaser would go to a diverse school made up of Puerto Ricans, African American with her high school being mostly Asian. Despite her fellow students having already chosen their careers by middle school, Glaser thought that maybe she would become a graphic designer or an architect, but she soon realized, it was too much work. She would also be the niece of Milton Glaser who designed the logos for i love new york and DC Comics among many others.

Cunniff meanwhile was looking at a career in comedy or becoming a veterinarian. However, it would be a trip to the vets office when she saw someone bring in a dead cat, that she soon decided, being a vet wasn’t for her. Schellenbach meanwhile was already in show business by the time she age 13, appearing in a broadway show.
As the members grew up, Cunniff goes to France to study and returns to New York, while Glaser is taking going to film school. They’re both working dead end jobs and the origins of Luscious Jackson would begin with both women assembling in a friend’s basement studio drinking coffee, coming up with samples, doing low key rapping and playing guitar. Cunniff would play bass while Glaser played guitar and they would sometimes switch instruments. It was in their friend’s basement that seven songs emerged that would make it on their first EP In Search fo Manny and while the first four tracks were done, the last two needed drums and keyboards. So the girls would soon enlist drummer Kate Schellenbach and keyboardist Vivian Trimble to round out the demos. Jill Cunniff would tell billboard why the band heavily used samples revealing “we did a lot more work with samples in the past mostly because we could never get immediate results with live instruments ”

Trimble would tell an interviewer about what she had been up to until this point revealing “I had been part of the performance scene in New York for years with people like John Kelly. My mother’s a concert pianist and my father’s an opera singer. I’d never pursued any of that seriously, but I started writing music for myself and for other directors and choreographers. Formed in 1989 by Danny Wilde and Phil Solem, The Rembrandts would be best known for writing the song I’ll Be There For You, which would become one of the most iconic TV theme songs of all time. But it would get the Rembrandts branded as one-hit wonders by some (even though they weren’t), while others called them sellouts. The success of the song would result in the band breaking up, despite making them rich. Today let’s talk about the history of the song.

Formed as a rock duo, The members of the Rembrandts would meet in the LA Club Scene in the 70’s before playing in the early 80’s era power pop group Great Buildings. After releasing one album for CBS Records, they would dissolve by 1981. The pair would end up pursuing their own solo careers after the implosion of Great Buildings, but they still stayed in touch. After having no success with their solo careers, the pair got together forming the Rembrandts in 1989.

In 1990 the duo released their first record, which was self titled peaking at number 88 on the billboard 200 moving several hundred thousand copies. It also produced a hit in "Just the Way It Is, Baby" , which peaked at number 14 on the billboard hot 100 charts.
Their follow up album Untitled, would be put out in1992, having some success with the song Johnny, Have You Seen Her?" and "Chase the Clouds Away". The song "Rollin' Down the Hill" meanwhile , would appear in the 1995 Jim Carrey film Dumb and Dumber.

Then in 1993 NBC was working on the pilot for their new show FRIENDS which was set to premiere in the fall of 1994. The show tells th story of six single 20 somethings living in New York City The show’s executive producer Kevin S. Bright, was looking for a theme song that shared some similarity to the R.E.M. song Shiny Happy People. In fact, the original pilot featured the R.E.M song, but R.E.M. also wasn’t interested in licensing the song. The show’s producers wanting to get a legit band to record the theme worked with the studio Warner Brothers, to see who was available on their roster at the time, and so the Rembrandts entered the picture.

Wilde would tell Buzzfeed what happened next "I think they thought it felt, tempo-wise, that was where they wanted to go," "Kevin had it in his head that he didn't want to have a jingle writer write the theme song for the show. He was a fan of The Rembrandts from other records that we had made, so he called our manager. Our manager called us on Monday and we said, 'Sure, we'll try it out. We'll see what happens.'"

In September of 1994 the Rembrandts would assemble in a studio with Michael Skloff, the Friends theme song composer and producer Martha Kaufman's husband, and Allee Willis, who wrote the lyrics to the song. While the Rembrandts wrote their own songs, they had minimal involvement with the writing of the Friends theme song Wilde would recall to the Independent “I remember thinking it was awesome, a really cool little pop tune. It had great harmonies and this upbeat vibe. More than anything, it was fun. Plus, Phil and I were really jacked to hear it on the TV show. Skloff took inspiration from the Beatles track Paperback Writer, attempting to recreate a 60’s vibe to the song.

The theme for Friends was only recorded as being 45 seconds long to fit the opening credits for the show. As for the handclaps, that was a last minute addition the Rembrandts weren’t aware of until they heard the final mix. By Solem’s own admission upon hearing the final mix, he thought the handclaps were the best part of the song.

Soon after Friends premiered in the fall of 1994 the Rembrandts asked not to have their name in the credits fearing it could alienate their fans and bring accusations against the group of selling out. .
Little did they know Friends would become a massive hit and the theme song took on a life of its own when one radio station in Nashville took the 45 second song and looped it to make it a full track. Soon enough ti spread to other radio stations across America and became highly requested on radio. Soon enough the band’s label told the band they needed to cut a full version of the song, despite the band being reluctant to do it with Solem revealing There was no way to get out of it," l

By 2001 Limp Bizkit were one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. Their first three albums all went platinum with their most two recent records at the time selling 6-7 million copies a piece. Despite riding high on commercial success, it was in 2001 guitarist Wes Borland left the group telling MTV at the time.

‘I could have probably gone on and still played the part of the guitar player of Limp Bizkit, but musically I was kind of bored. If I was to continue, it would have been about the money and not about the true music, and I don't want to lie to myself, or to them or to fans of Limp Bizkit,"

Borland would admit in the same interview that his bandmates soon felt more like business associates or co-workers making his gig in limp bizkit feel more like a job. Then years later in 2015, during an interview with Stereogum, Borland revealed how a tragedy was part of his decision to leave adding "We played the Big Day Out Festival and had a girl die during our set, which was devastating to me and I still haven't really ever gotten over that, but I was like, 'That's enough. I'm done. I don't like all the attention that we're getting. I don't like that we're on 'TRL.' This is not what I thought being in a rock band would be like.'"

Borland would reveal in 2020 on the let there be talk podcast, that timing of him quitting the band couldn’t have been worse. After 9/11, the stock market plunged resulting in him virtually losing all of his money, over a million dollars Despite the financial setback it wasn’t enough to make him reconsider, despite assurances from management, that he’d make millions if he stayed in the band.

Borland would form a new group with his brother called Eat the Day, but the project proved to be unfruitful as the duo couldn’t find a suitable vocalist. Meanwhile, his old bandmates in Limp Bizkit teamed up with Guitar Center to launch a 22 city tour through the US to find a replacement for Borland. Dubbed the “Put Your Guitar Where Your Mouth Is” contest, the band invited anyone who thought they were good enough to audition for the band.

Well, the whole thing was a disaster with many claiming the search was a publicity stunt and soon enough stories circulated online about what was really happening at the auditions. Contestants who partook in the auditions would claim the tryouts had strict rules and conditions including

No guitar solos were to be performed
No cover songs were allowed to be performed including no playing limp bizkit songs so you’re basically playing something you came up with, which didn’t sit well with a lot of people.
Any guitar riffs or ideas the contestants came up with could be used by limp bizkit and the band would not be required to pay compensation and anything they play basically becomes the property of limp bizkit.
The agreement also stated that these contestants images could be used in a forthcoming documentary without compensation.
At the end of the day Limp bizkit wouldn’t hire anyone from the auditions at guitar center, instead enlisting ex- snot guitar mike mike smith to play on their next album , 2003’s results may vary the album. While the album went platinum it sold only 15 percent of the copies of it’s predecessor. Despite being out of Limp Bizkit for several years, Borland would claim in several interviews that being connected to Fred Durst and company hampered his employment opportunities when it came to playing with high profile musicians including Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. Borland offered his insights into why the Limp Bizkit brand was so toxic telling NME It was too much in people’s faces for too long. I think Fred’s romance with celebrity was really toxic and he realises that now. But you know, when you’re in your 20s and all this shit’s happening, you’re like ‘Yeah, I’m going to do that!’. When everything’s as crazy as it was for us and blowing up, we were fucking kids and we acted like kids. Formed in 1985, White Zombie’s sound would undergo a metamorphosis during their career from Noise Rock to more heavy metal sound achieving a lot of success during the early to mid 90’s. But by the end of the decade the band called it quits. Today, let’s talk about why the band broke up.

Rob Zombie spent his formative years in Hav (hay)erhill, Mass., a depressed industrial outpost where zombie spent most of his time hanging out at cemetirers;

Zombie would be pretty anti-social as a kid having different interests from his peers telling the LA Times “I grew up with really normal, straight parents, but they let me and my brother do anything we wanted to do. They took us to see ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ I remember seeing, like, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ when I was 5 years old.” He would spend eight hours a day watching TV and it soon became an obsession for the future musician with him literally watching anything that was broadcast on TV and he would memorize the tv schedule for the week. This eventually led him down the road of making his own super 8 films.

Apart from television, Zombie would develop a taste for larger than life musical acts including Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper. Couple this with his love of the DIY ethos of punk rock and Rob Zombie had the basic blueprint for White Zombie.

The band would form when bassist Sean Yseult and frontman Rob Zombie both met while attending the Parsons school of design. The band’s first drummer was also a student at the same school. Yseult would reveal in the book Louder THan Hell “Rob & I were both oddballs. I think we were drawn to each other. We started the band within a month of meeting and basically lived together for seven years. We both had dyed black hair, he had a stenciled misfits leather jacket and i had a bunch of animal bones tied onto a necklace” They would date but break up during the early 90’s with Yseult telling the chicago tribune "The whole band and the business just got so much bigger than any relationship," The band would have a variety of drummers during this time and found a guitarist named J (Jay Yuenger) who went by the name J.

White Zombie would be the amalgamation of two scenes the noise rock scene of new york which included bands like Sonic Youth and the hardcore scene in DC including minor threat, bad brains and dave grohl’s pre-nirvana band scream. To Rob he had the goal of not only giving fans a spectacular music video for there songs, but also be able to give fans an equally as impressive live show rigging their own pyro.

The band would sign to label Caroline records who put out their first two album 1987’s soul crusher and 1989’s make them die slowly.
But the road to gain recognition was a long one. The band’s first release 1987’s soul crusher seemed to go unnoticed or was misunderstood with Yseult revealing in louder than hell People didn’t really get it. We would play a lot of those things together. We would play this really heavy music in clubs in the east village and all these hipsters just stared at us and scratched their heads. ” The reviews echoed a similar sentiment, but it was the band’s detractors that drove Rob Zombie to push forward. And while the sales didn’t reflect what was to happen soon the group’s first album found an audience with some accomplished musicians at the time including Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.

The band soon built up a crowd of followers at venues including CBGB’s and started playing metal clubs widening their audience. .
By the early 90’s they would soon nab a recording contract with major label Geffen Records and the band would move out west to Los Angeles.
The group’s first record for Geffen La Sexercisto Devil Music Volume 1 which came out in march of 1992 would be a slow burn. Entertainment Weekly would publish an article in October of 1993 that highlighted that the album had moved only about 75,000 copies before one of singles welcome to planet motherfers was featured on the mtv hit show beavis and butthead.

The british Cult would burst onto the scene in the mid 80’s with a string of successful records including Love, Electric and Sonic Temple. The two constants in the band has always been frontman Ian Astbury & guitarist Billy Duffy who are also the principal songwriters. But as the 90’s rolled around the Cult were in for a rude awakening. Their first record of the decade 1991’s Ceremony would be released at possibly the worst time as it would be put out in September alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Nirvana’s Nevermind, Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion records plus you had Pearl Jam’s Ten and Metallica’s Black album come out the month before. The album soon got lost in the shuffle and also represented a stylistic shift for the group as Astbury and Duffy were butting heads over the musical direction of the band, so Ceremony represented a compromise. The album ultimately peaked at number 24 on the album charts and sold half a million copies in the states, but it didn’t do as well commercially as the band’s past efforts. Also hampering the band at this time was a $61 Million lawsuit they were involved in over the cover art for the album. The family of the boy on the album cover sued the band claiming they never gave permission for the photo to be used, while the band claimed they went through the appropriate legal avenues.

The Cult would return in 1994 with their self titled album that was more influenced by alternative rock at the time. The album sold worse than Ceremony and it ultimately led to the band breaking up. The band would fall apart while on tour in South America with Billy Duffy telling Loudersound “we broke up in 1995.. That was a real break-up! We were in south america and ian just split. I think the problem was, that neither of us were really comfortable with success. We’re just not cut out for being popstars. The rest of the tour dates would be scrapped. Astbury would tell Newday “I left the band because I was exhausted after 12 years with Duffy. I had given everything i could in our relationship and made a lot of sacrifices in my life. Time with my family and time with yourself to be away from the pressures of being objectified as the singer in a rock n’ roll band. Also contributing to his decision to take a break was his struggles with substance abuse, his marriage falling apart and the changing musical scene and how the rock n’ roll frontman persona had changed from a decade prior. He would remark to an interviewer. Look how they dress. They don’t dress like peacocks. Their music didn’t celebrate sexuality.

During their time apart in the mid 90’s Astbury and Duffy would play in separate musical groups, but it would be former Cult and Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt sorum who instigated a reunion. Sorum had joined the cult during the sonic temple tour days and soon departed to join Guns N’ Roses to help them make their Use Your Illusion records and tour the album. He had been fired by frontman Axl Rose in 1997. It was one night in the late 90’s he was sitting on his couch watching TV when he saw Jay Leno’s Tonight show and saw buckcherry performing. He would call up Duffy and according to his autobiography double talkin jive he’d say ‘billy! I just saw a band on tv and they are a watered down poor man’s version of the cult. I think rock n’ roll could be coming back.” the musicians would talk about their longstanding issues and what they were now up to and Sorum proposed that they get the band back together, put out a press release and book a tour. Duffy was into the idea and they enlisted bassist Martin LeNoble and the Cult were now back and booked a sold out theater tour across America. The success of the band’s reunion tour resulted in record labels showing up to their gigs and making offers, one of the labels who pitched to the cult was atlantic who offered them a million dollar advan

I’ve had a lot of requests for this band, so let’s talk about the history of the group Mr. Big.

Mr. Big would sometimes be lumped in with the glam metal bands of the sunset strip and just seen as yet another LA band. They would sprout up at the tail end of the whole glam metal scene in the late 80’s and The history of the band began with bassist Billy Sheehan.

Sheehan’s start in music began in his hometown of buffalo where he started playing guitar before trading it in for a bass and forming a band a band called Talas in 1972.. They had some regional success, putting out three records and even toured with van halen in 1984. Sheehan even played briefly with English band UFO in the early 80’s after Talas had opened for them. It was during that tour Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth took notice of the young bassist.. It was following David Lee Roth leaving Van Halen in 1985 that he enlisted Sheehan to be his band.. Also playing with Roth was guitarist Steve Via and Sheehan thought the band was going to have significant potential. The band collectively recorded Roth’s Debut LP 1986’s Eat Em and Smile. But when it came time to record Roth’s follow up record, 1988 Skyscraper, that collaborative relationship changed int he studio. Sheehan would tell the record newspaper “compare the first two albums and you can hear how manufactured skyscraper sounds. We recorded all our parts separately and i never even heard the complete album until it was released.” He would tell the valley advocate springfield that the album had too many synthesizers on it and he felt too constricted trying to write his parts for the album. It was this experience that gave him an outline of what he wanted to do with his next band, which would be Mr. Big he would add “From my stint as a sideman, I learned that democracy works best.”

There were rumors following Sheehan’s exit, that the bassist was going to be joining ex-billy idol guitarist Steve Stevens at the time. Sheehan was also getting offered solo deals by record labels including Mr. Big’s future home Atlantic Records. It would be mike varney of guitar player magazine who ended up connecting Sheehan with vocalists. Sheehan would reach out to Van Halen producer Ted templeman when it came to finding out the hottest guitar player was at the time. He pointed Sheehan in the direction of Paul Gilbert who the bassist already knew. It turned out Gilbert had played in a band that opened for Talas a number of times in Pittsburgh. Funny enough years later in 1985 in LA, Sheehan was a judge at a guitar wars contest revealing to the buffalo news, one of the contestants was Gilbert, who won the contest. Add to that Sheehan had seen a number of Racer X shows and it was destiny that these two guys were going to play together.

Sheehan would tell the buffalo news When i found out he wasn’t as stably in racer x as i had thought, i called him up and said listen I’ve got Eric Martin to start a band with and he goes Eric Martin you’re kidding. I’ve been listening to him for the last 3 or 4 weeks trying to find out a way to get in touch with him myself. So ironically that’s how it went down.” Drummer Pat Torpey (Tore -pee) would enter the picture when Sheehan met him during as they sang backup vocals for David Lee Roth’s planned tour for Skyscraper and the plan was for the backup vocals to be sampled. Pat also did background vocals on the last motley crue record as well. Torpey, had already amassed an impressive resume touring with Robert Plant, Belinda Carlisle, The Knack and Ted Nugent rounded out the lineup. Within 16 months they got a record deal and released their first album.

It was in April of 1988 of that Sheehan began assembling the components of another band telling the LA Times “The plan was to have a band like the British bands of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s-like Humble Pie and Bad Company that had a bluesy, wailing R&B; singer fronting a heavy-rock band,” Calling themselves Mr. Big, the band would take their name of a song by british group free. The band soon had a big time manager herbie herbert who had managed Journey.
