‎GIVĒON sits down with Zane Lowe to discuss his debut album, ‘Give Or Take,’ his inaugural Coachella performance, and the outcome of his unique music education.

‎GIVĒON possesses several musical gifts, but one of the most important elements of his musicality is his timing. Whether it’s his unique ability to create space and suspense while performing live, or his wisdom in growing his career slowly, ‎GIVĒON prioritizes moving at his own speed. ‎GIVĒON opens up about his relationship with his mother, his decision to exclude any features on his highly personal debut album and shares his musical inspirations.

Nov. 18, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- While preparing for Burna Boy's Tiny Desk appearance, it was evident early on that his performance would be strictly business. After exchanging pleasantries on the phone with his mother and manager, Bose Ogulu, she made it clear there wouldn't be time for much of anything else. "Burna has been working really hard so please bear with us," she told me. "The band will arrive well before him. Let me know the latest time at which he can arrive."

The Nigerian singer and songwriter is one of the biggest African artists in the world. He's also a pioneer of Afro-fusion which incorporates sonics and influences from a myriad of genres, laid on an Afrobeat foundation. The sound has been inescapable this year. The man born Damini Ogulu has been touring the world for the majority of 2019 and has at least 10 songs in the current nightclub rotation. Beyoncé took notice and offered him a place on The Lion King soundtrack, The Lion King: The Gift.

Sandwiched between two sold-out concerts in Washington D.C., his Tiny Desk performance offers something relatively different from what we're used to seeing at his rowdy stage shows. He's more reflective here and restrained, allowing his songwriting to shine. In the spirit of one of his heroes, Fela Kuti, he weaves through highlights from his breakout album, African Giant, that are liable to move your body as much as your social consciousness.

Nearly ten years after their debut, Sam Smith is releasing their deepest album yet: ‘Gloria’. Sam meets up with Zane Lowe in New York for a wide-ranging conversation ahead of their Saturday Night Live performance.

Sam Smith discusses how 'In the Lonely Hour' feels in hindsight', and reveals how years of playing into a character separated their public and private lives, making many people around them resistant to the more sexualized direction of 'Gloria.' Sam reveals the personal struggles that they've conquered to get to where they are today, including ****phobia, transphobia, OCD, and body dysmorphia, and how music remained their saving grace.

Despite all the hardships, Sam celebrates recent wins, like being invited to the White House with President Biden, performing with Kim Petras and Sharon Stone on Saturday Night Live, and going on tour again with their most authentic music yet. The conversation concludes with Sam expressing how excited they are to continue to be the most real version of themselves.

Mixmag & Coors present The Lab LDN, powered by Pioneer PRO AUDIO.
BBC Radio 1 Dance DJ Jaguar, once host of The Lab LDN, returns to the Mixmag office this Friday after a handful of years knuckling down on her solo music career. Tix for her London Utopia residency - https://ra.co/events/1649206# Coming full circle and returning to her former spot behind the decks this week, Jaguar makes her debut performing at The Lab where she’ll bring her energetic selections and fresh cuts to the place where she first earned her stripes.

Since breaking out as a selector in the mid-10s, Jaguar has gone on to play gigs around the world while holding down regular shows on BBC’s Radio 1 Introducing and Radio 1 Dance, and launched Utopia - centred around making dance music a more accessible and safe space for LGBTQIA+ people, and setting a focus on the Black roots of electronic music. Through Utopia and the Jaguar Foundation, in which she aims to “make electronic music a more equal place” for the next generation of talent, the selector has also unearthed thousands of new artists through her weekly radio show and helped to bring dance music back to the MOBOs alongside the help of Club BEMA.

“This is an honour,” Jaguar said on her return to The Lab LDN. “Anyone that knows me knows how much of a big deal this is. Mixmag has been a huge part of my journey, where I had the pleasure of joining the team in my early 20s,” she said.

Purple Disco Machine plays a 90 minute DJ set for Glitterbox's Sunday residency at the No.1 club in the world, Hï Ibiza.

Bubba Sparxxx came through for his first-ever VladTV interview, and he started off by speaking to Shawn Prez about growing up in rural Georgia and being exposed to hip-hop through a friend and falling in love. He then detailed how he excelled in football and played for a short stint in college before moving to Athens, Georgia, where he started taking music seriously. During the conversation, Bubba explained how he caught the attention of Interscope Records' Jimmy Iovine, which he pointed out came along after Eminem signed with the label. Bubba also detailed working with Timbaland on his huge hit "Ugly," his first album going platinum, and working with Justin Timberlake. From there, Bubba spoke about having a snowmobile accident that left him hospitalized, and Bubba added that it led to an addiction to pain medication. Bubba then detailed his journey to sobriety, which he said led to some setbacks in his music career after the huge success of "Ms. New Booty." To hear more, including Bubba speaking about Eminem dissing him on "G.O.A.T.," hit the full interview above.

Throughout the 90s hip hop was doing a lot of transitioning, from fashion to dance, appearance, and a lot of different styles were brought to the table, with every artist competing to see who could bring something new. Brand Nubian started off with great opportunity behind the Master of Ceremony success of Grand Puba and found success in the music industry, but also controversy due to their lyrics often being militant and sometimes ****phobic. Even today many music outlets or a place like instagram has removed some of their songs because of it. Brand Nubian wasn't the best of rap groups, but they did have a unique pocket in time where they could've done more in the 90s. They broke up after their first album, and nothing has been the same since. Revolving door of on again off again between them made their music inconsistent and at some point time just went past them. Still a notable group in hip hop, but for these reasons, they didn't become who they were supposed to. Did Success Go To BRAND NUBIAN's Head? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

John Mayer sits down with Zane Lowe to talk about ‘Sob Rock’, his sole source of joy during the pandemic. He approached it like writing a script. Tracks like “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” and “Why You No Love Me” went through multiple versions while he sought to make each track sweet but never sappy. His goal for the ‘Sob Rock’ was to make music that transports listeners, triggering memories in listeners that may or may not exist. Listen to John Mayer on Apple Music: https://apple.co/_JohnMayer
